One of the iconic symbols of London is the Black Cab. I love the design and the fact that they don't look like any other car. I love the fact that they have a turning circle of 25ft just so they can go around the roundabout outside the Savoy Hotel. The design has change very little since the 1950's because it is so well suited for it's purpose. When I saw these two lived up I had to grab the shot.

Vaccination day! Under normal circumstances, a Sunday evening would be a very strange time indeed for a medical appointment... but of course under normal circumstances no vaccination would be required in the first place.

I’m only eligible for my first dose this early in the roll-out because I apparently qualify as a “carer”, insofar as I unofficially provide Mum with whatever necessary assistance she might require around the house. But then, for a woman in her sixties, on her second cancer, who I still actually live with, not helping would be a profoundly dickish thing to do, wouldn’t it?

I’d been thinking to sneak some candid shots inside the vaccination centre, but in the end I wasn’t bold enough to try, so I’ve got nothing to show for today except this very slightly wonky sign, snapped whilst I was queuing to get in. A very weak finale to the second month of this 365 Project, during which I was already struggling for inspiration much of the time anyway...

After a night of brutal storms, perhaps daybreak was also going to bring a break in the weather? But no: looking out the window at dawn revealed another vicious day in prospect. But how to capture this feeling? Well, not entirely successfully...

One of the trees behind the house across the road is at least hanging at a strange angle, caught by the wind, but the others are much less obviously affected; the raindrops spattered across the windowpane through which I was shooting are perhaps still too defocussed to be very obvious, a problem that could have been solved by stopping down from f/4 to, say, f/8, perhaps even f/11; exposing the negative for shadow detail in the foreground brickwork has unfortunately compressed the zones of highlight detail in the cloudy sky, robbing the dawn of a lot of its stormy contrast.

Still, I knew what I wanted, and being able to diagnose quite why I failed to achieve it is also a kind of success! And in any case no mere photo could ever reproduce the rattling of fences and howling of chimneys.

Just over a year ago, only a couple of weeks before Europe went into lockdown, we spent a day eating and drinking our way around the sights of Grenoble – whilst speaking, to my eternal shame, almost exclusively in English. I ordered this lens before Christmas, intending to have the choice between a moderate wide and a short telephoto from the very start of my 365 Project, but the eight-week delay in its arrival meant that all of January and the first half of February ended up being a one-camera-one-lens challenge – worthwhile, I’m sure, but not what I wanted.

Still, it’s here now, and to list each item in the entire fucking catalogue of staggering incompetence and breathtaking negligence that caused such a delay would seem churlish, wouldn’t it? (I thank them for getting it to me eventually, of course, but I’d still really struggle to recommend... the company in question.)
