As my workflow improves and gets more detailed, I've wanted to go back and re-scan and reprocess this shot. I've done this with a handful of other shots, but I had to make this a new post rather than replacing the old photo because Flickr for whatever reason won't recognize the higher resolution and displays it only in the lower resolution.

After four days in our little utility room it’s almost like somebody’s been hotboxing with Febreze in there – apparently this is what botanists mean by “fragrant”.

If we allow that Colwick Country Park is “local” to both of us, and that Rob might constitute some kind of “support bubble” for me, and that a long walk should provide a degree of “exercise”, then we didn’t break any of the rules this afternoon. And our enjoyment of this woodland shelter that we discovered was unquestionably “necessary”!

I was supposed to be going for a socially distanced walk with Zosia, but then something came up at the last moment and she had to take a rain-check. I decided there was no point in sitting at home and feeling sorry for myself, so I went for a walk anyway – whereupon I found this, and then felt sorry for myself outdoors instead.

It’ll be all right, we’ve rearranged our meeting for tomorrow!

Taking the new secateurs for a test drive! I’m sure I should’ve done this weeks ago, before all these little buds started to show... let’s hope this late pruning doesn’t send our poor apple tree into some kind of shock or something, doesn’t ruin the harvest or whatever, because this really is quite a substantial amount I’ve just taken off.

Ten years ago, when I undertook my last 365 Project, there was a magnificent camellia bush in this corner, whose spring buds I photographed on this very date after the old woman who lived there at the time had given me permission to come and take pictures in her garden whenever I felt like it.

Now, ten years later, the old woman is dead, and the new occupants of the house have removed the camellia bush, along with part of the fence, to facilitate their ongoing renovations.

Two months in lockdown.

(New challenges require new approaches: for the duration of my time off work, and with my horizons severely limited, I’ve decided to experiment with shooting and presenting pairs of images, instead of the usual single frames. The results might not turn out to be anything special, but there’s got to be something worthwhile in the process.)

It won’t be all right. Yesterday’s planned get-together with Zosia, already rescheduled for today, has now been further postponed... by the announcement of another National Lockdown. Apparently Tier 4 restrictions weren’t making enough of a difference?!

We’re still allowed out to exercise “locally”, although what exactly that means hasn’t actually been defined – but for her to drive through several different boroughs (and cross the river!) just to go for a stroll would probably be difficult to justify to any over-zealous law-enforcement officer who might stop her. So here I am, alone again, this time after dark, on the riverside embankment behind the industrial estate, pretty short on inspiration.

New spring daffodils amongst old dead montbretia, again misfocussed.

I’m starting to wonder if there’s actually an issue with the calibration of the rangefinder, given how consistent the misfocussing seems to be: always slightly in front, but only really obvious when shot wider than about f/2.8, below which the increased depth of field starts to render the intended subject sufficiently sharp that any slight softness might be more readily blamed on user error. The problem becomes most noticeable in close-ups, of course, even when not taken wide open (both yesterday’s and today’s examples were stopped down, just a little, to f/1.7), but it’s significant enough in those photos that were made at f/1.2 to be apparent even at longer focus distances (19th January and 12th February in particular stand out to me, as I can remember exactly where I was trying to place the focal point on both occasions, and where it ended up being definitely isn’t quite where I wanted it). I probably should’ve put a test roll through the camera before embarking on this year-long project with it, shouldn’t I? But it never occurred to me that an Ebay seller’s “Top Mint” designation might be only cosmetic, and not also functional! Well, I’m an idiot...

And I still haven’t explained how I ended up snoozing away the afternoon in a chair whilst waiting for the wind to die down and the sun to move off the garden, which is how this picture ended up being quite so dusky, and with unanticipated bokeh from a neighbour’s fence-mounted fairy lights.

TLDR: multiple fuck-ups result in shitty diary entry.

PS: Happy tenth birthday to my eldest nephew.

No sooner had I left the house to look for my daily picture than I bumped into my older sister and her family coming up the twitchel. She declined a group portrait, knowing that the photo would at some point end up online as part of this 365 Project, and wanting to protect her children from the weirdos of the Internet for as long as possible – which seems perfectly reasonable.

With the light already going, even in the middle of the afternoon, we kept our catch-up brief, and then continued in the opposite directions in which we’d already been heading. I don’t know where they all ended up, but I stopped walking upon discovery (and capture) of this quiet suburban scene.

After my first dose of AstraZeneca yesterday, I feel how this looks...

And yet in spite of the hot and cold shivers, and the aches in parts of my body that I never even knew existed, I still managed to find my daily picture, do some grocery shopping, cook myself a small meal AND take a Spanish lesson! Which is more than I accomplish in some twenty-hour days, never mind the mere four that I was out of bed today.

New decade, new daily photo project!

2011 included a relationship, frequent international travel, and lots of time spent at the theatre.

2021? Dunno, might go back to work at some point, might even be allowed to visit a neighbouring county eventually.

Until then, under these new Tier 4 restrictions, I guess I’ll just be making a lot of “New Topographics”-inspired studies of the local area during my permitted daily exercise.

I always like to be up bright and early on New Year’s Day, and apparently I’m not the only one.
