Sometimes we lose context in our critiques and judge these cameras like they are all new models on the shelf. It shouldn't matter what the comparisons between them were 50 to 100 years ago, or how they may compare to cameras made today. Now they are all beautiful collector items that we still enjoy using, learning from, or just looking at. From first to last, they are a very important part of our history!

The Panzer II is the common name used for a family of German tanks used in World War II. The official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen II (abbreviated PzKpfw II).

My collegues were eating nicely cut dragon fruit during lunch time. The vibrance-ness and it's natural color attracts me to shoot this down. Even the plate, looks as if it's in the composition too. Much suitable.

Auschwitz II (Birkenau) es el campo que la mayor parte de la gente conoce como Auschwitz. Allà se encerró a cientos de miles de judÃos y allà también se ejecutó a más de un millón de deportados y decenas de miles de gitanos.
El campo está ubicado en Birkenau, a unos 3 km de Auschwitz I.
El objetivo principal del campo no era el mantener prisioneros como fuerza laboral (como era el caso de Auschwitz I y III), sino más bien el exterminio. Para cumplir con este objetivo, se equipó el campo con 4 crematorios con cámaras de gas. Cada cámara de gas podÃa recibir hasta 2.500 prisioneros por turno.
La mayorÃa de los prisioneros llegaba al campo en tren, con frecuencia después de un terrible viaje en vagones de carga que duraba varios dÃas, durante el que no se les facilitaba comida ni agua. A partir de 1944 se extendió la vÃa del tren para que entrara directamente al campo. Algunas veces, al llegar el tren, los prisioneros eran pasados directamente a las cámaras de gas. En otras ocasiones, los nazis seleccionaban prisioneros, frecuentemente bajo la supervisión del SS Hauptsturmführer Dr. Josef Mengele, para ser enviados a campos de trabajo o para realizar experimentos. En general los niños, los ancianos y los enfermos eran enviados directamente a las cámaras de gas, las cuales eran coordinadas por el SS Hauptscharführer Otto Moll.

The ancient site of Tanis lies in the north east of Egypt's Delta region and dates back to the 19th Dynasty, later becoming the seat of power for later pharaohs during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties.
Many of the monuments here are inscribed for Ramesses II but are believed to have been transferred at a later date from his former capital 'Pi-Ramesses', modern Qantir, (one of the nearby villages we travelled through en route here) where little remains today. The cities in the Delta were built along the many branches of the Nile that bisect this region, but with the silting up of some branches over time such settlements became vulnerable and were abandoned, as happened at Pi-Ramesses and later its replacement Tanis in turn.
The site today is located near the modern village of San el Hagar and the surviving ruins largely consist of isolated inscribed blocks, scattered obelisk and architectural fragments and pieces of large scale sculptures. It is nonetheless an impressive spectacle and a great site to explore, the almost caramel colour of the stone and desert adds much to the atmosphere.
More complete are the tomb structures of the 21st & 22nd dynasties, the tomb of Shoshenq III being complete except for its roof and filled with reliefs and sarcophagi. The tomb of Psusennes I (along with Amenemope and Shoshenq II who were also interred there) is located nearby under a surviving section of the ruined plinth of the former temple of Amun, but the tombs themselves can only be glimpsed through openings. These tombs yielded intact treasures when they were investigated by Pierre Montet in 1940 and the contents are now on display in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
My first encounter with Tanis was of course via one of my favourite films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which it is the setting for the stunning 'Map Room' and 'Well of Souls' where the Ark of the Covenant is found in the film. Of course none of it was filmed here (or even in Egypt itself) but I was intrigued to see broken obelisks like the one that led Indiana Jones to the target! But the film's claim that the city had been lost up to that point is pure myth, it has been investigated frequently since the early 19th century.
Our trip to Tanis was slightly complicated by the security situation, it is quite remote and the closest we got to the trouble spots in the Sinai, thus we were held back at Tell Basta until an armed escort could accompany us. This didn't cause alarm, being something we had experienced already elsewhere, and a sign of how seriously Egypt takes the safety of its visitors. Nonetheless it was quite humbling having groups of guards making a special trip at short notice just for the two of us!
We didn't spend more than an hour on site here (despite having a very good local guide who was willing to show us more if we'd stayed) as it was getting late and we didn't want to keep our generous escorts waiting.

1956-7 Agfa Isola II.
Agfa made 2 models, the Isola I says "Agfa Isola I" below the lens while the Isola II only says "Agfa Isola" and is printed above the lens. The Isola II is the camera featured here.
I really like this camera. It's got a multi-coated Agfa Agnar triplet lens that is fairly sharp, but still soft on the edges. I consider this camera to be a "folding type" though it's not like most folders. The lens pops out from the camera body with a little twist and has a light tight plastic tube instead of a bellows.
Sometimes the Isola is referred to as a toy camera similar to a Diana or Holga, but I find it to be much nicer and easier to load. It is mostly plastic, but is nicely built with no light leaks or having to tape it up each time you use it. The Isola II has 3 shutter speeds (1/100, 1/30 + bulb) and 2 f-stops (6.3 & 11). Shoots 12 6x6 images on 120 film. It accepts 30mm push-on filters. I screwed a 31.5-46mm step-up ring to an Ednalite push-on ring. This allows me to use 46mm screw-in filters and a plastic lens hood from an old VHS video camera.
You can often find these cameras on eBay for under $25.00. Since these cameras are 55+ years old, they almost always need to have the lenses disassembled to clean dried-up grease from the focus threads. This can be done yourself as there are lot's of websites with great illustrations and instructions.
