This Ruby-throated Hummingbird hovered just long enough for me to capture the full extension of its wings and the shimmer of green on its back.
I photographed this one near my hummingbird feeder here in Arkansas, where they make frequent visits during the warmer months.
Females lack the male’s red throat but still shine with metallic green feathers and remarkable flight control. Freezing motion like this requires fast shutter speeds and timing as they dart and hover rapidly while feeding.
The Hummingbirds are back! I spotted my first one today while working in the garden. I'm not ready for them yet but that's OK. I'm just really happy to see them return.
