Art...A daylily or day lily is a flowering plant in the genus Hemerocallis, a member of the family Asphodelaceae, subfamily Hemerocallidoideae. Despite the common name, it is not in fact a lily. Gardening enthusiasts and horticulturists have long bred daylily species for their attractive flowers. Wikipedia

Sword-billed Hummingbird is a “Wow!” sight even for non-birders. That incredible bill seems improbable, but there it is — a symbol of natural selection and adaptation to feeding at flowers with very long corollas. The distribution of this spectacular species is in the Andes of South America, extending from western Venezuela down to central Bolivia (with a few gaps). Appropriately, this individual was seen at the Ensifera Hummingbird Sanctuary (named after this species) near Cusco, Peru.

Hummingbirds are birds native to the Americas and constituting the biological family Trochilidae. They are the smallest of birds, most species measuring 7.5–13 cm in length. The smallest extant hummingbird species is the 5 cm bee hummingbird, which weighs less than 2.0 g. Wikipedia

What can I say? There's just something about hummingbirds. I made a little hummingbird movie of a hummer I call Twitchy...check it out if you have a couple of minutes to spare. It isn't perfect, but I'm just figuring things out on the new camera. Enjoy your weekend!

Lots more hummingbird photos here.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird launching from a perch in the garden on a rainy day. There are still a few hummingbirds in the area but I have decided to call it a year for hummingbird photography. I have processed 29,000 photos over the last few weeks and I still have a few more days of photo processing to do. This is the first year that I took the photos with the intent of making YouTube videos and I think the results are going to be great. I also decided to try out the video features on my D850. Not the easiest video camera to use but the results were satisfactory for a beginner, as you will see in the future. I really like the 120 frames per second slow motion. It's still not fast enough to slow down a hummingbird's wings, but it does give a different perspective because you can see the whole hummingbird quivering rapidly from its heartbeat, and that's in slow motion! I was out every day from 6:30 to 9:00 and I enjoyed my early mornings with the birds. I was out longer on the overcast and cooler days. All in all, it has been a great year for hummingbirds in the garden. I hope you all enjoy the photos. Thanks for visiting, I will try to be on more often now that I am not shooting daily. Have a great week.

Yes! Another Hummingbird in the garden! This is the Mama to the babies in the nest who fledged a couple of days ago. I dont know the name of the flower but I think it is a Costas Female Hummingbird. The Costas Male lives in our front yard and only ventures to the back for the feeders.

Instead of doing my usual fast shutter speeds, I purposely did this with a slow shutter speed to show motion of the wings & tail.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird with Begonias and Salvia. I shot this one yesterday. The hummingbird season is coming along nicely. I'm out every day, which is the reason I have not been posting on flickr. I do try to keep up with everyone even though I am not posting much. Thank you so much for all your visits, faves and comments.

Wait for it...and turn on the sound.

It's amazing how its head stays so still while it flies around. If you look closely you can also see its little tongue going in and out and the feathers on the back of its head being blown around by the wind from its flapping wings. I love the moment when normal speed slows down and the sound of its chirping and flapping wings also slows down.

Shot with iPhone 6s: 720p and 240fps

I'm back in Boston - and back to decent internet speeds - so now I have to start posting stuff from my trip.

One thing I love to do when I visit California is watch the hummingbird feeders - and this time, I tried out my iPhone 6s slow mo video for the first time.

Listen to hear it chirping and look closely to see its little tongue going in and out!

We decided based on some bird books that this one is either an Allen's hummingbird or a Rufous hummingbird, which are apparently very difficult to tell apart.

This video was at 120fps and 1080p (I also took some at 240fps and 720p which I'll post later for comparison). I had to export this using iMovie on my iPhone to get it to upload to Flickr, not sure if that lost any resolution but I hope not.
