A hummingbird drinking nectar. The colors have been enhanced slightly using Affinity Photo.

Photos of a late afternoon spent with a large charm of hummingbirds. It was one of the coolest bird-related experiences I've ever had.

Make sure to jump to my youtube to see a super-slow motion close-up of the birds in flight and visit virtualwayfarer.com for more background.

221 - Hummingbird: According to the Wikipedia, an average hummingbird flaps its wing 80 times per second. So 1/400 sec shutter speed means the wings moved about 1/5th of a flap during this exposure. I set up my camera on a tripod about 3 feet from the hummingbird feeder and triggered it with an infrared remote shutter release. I was about 10 feet from the camera (and 6 feet from the hummingbird). (This may not be the last picture of a hummer!) via 500px 500px.com/photo/42786958

Hummingbird in so cal

Miller Canyon, Cochise Co., AZ

The boy sits all the time to drink. The little girl is more wary. She only sits once in awhile.

As each day goes by both my wife and I swear that there are more and more hummingbirds out there. No, I don't think we are going crazy, but when they are really active, during the coolest part of the day, you would think there are a bunch of bees out there. I wonder if I can get the FCC or someone to send over a air traffic controller, lol.

Garden, Summer 2014

Taken while sitting on my front porch in the late afternoon. It is a pleasure to just sit and watch these tiny birds fly. It is truly amazing the speed at which they fly, yet they nevr hit anything, except one another when they get into fights.

Best viewed large.

One of the this season's last remaining backyard hummingbirds. The rest must have headed south already.

What is really amazing about photographing hummingbirds is you may catch a couple of hummingbirds in almost the same spot doing the same thing, yet each picture is different. We had a storm roll in tonight and that ment low light which upset me because they were all out in force. I am now refilling the feeders every other day. To be honest with you I think they have a drinking problem, lol
