Lucifers are a favoured flower of the Annas Hummingbird. The bell-shaped, red flowers are a sign of delicious nectar.

This hummingbird came to these feeders pretty regularly, but stayed for the briefest of visits each time.

Today I had my first hummingbird show up for this season. The warmer weather also brought the grosbeaks, indigo buntings and a few more orioles. The grosbeaks are enjoying the grape jelly too over the oranges hands down.

Hummingbird fever

Our only lifer of the visit to Paton Center for Hummingbirds, thanks to great hummingbirds in the previous days. But, as you can see, the views we got were un-fucking-believalbe. Yep…that good..This fantastic Broad-billed decided to pause in the tree above Sara and I and scold us for a good 3 minutes. I have never been so overjoyed with nature.

It doesn't take long for a humming bird to appear in our garden now - of the 6 or 8 that visit the feeders regularly, you typically only have to wait 10-15 minutes for one to show up, so here is one taken as I was taking it easy in our garden this morning...

A female rufous hummingbird feeds on a croscosmia flower.

We took down a feeder and placed this plant in its location. This is an immature male who consistently nectared at this location away from the mature males.

I had a chance this afternoon to make a few more photos of the hummers.

Shutter speed is 1/60 to capture the motion of this black-chinned hummingbird's wings.

About as close as he would let me get.

I expect that this will be the first of many hummingbird photos. We hung some feeders about a week ago and today is the first time we've seen the birds. I know that I've got plenty of room to improve on this shot, so I'm looking forward to working on this throughout the summer.

Even better stretch, getting those shoulders worked out.
