No, the hotel didn't provide this feature, but in cold, dry Saskatoon, you need one of these because the room is so dry. It's quite compact and uses half-liter water bottles, which are provided in my hotel room. I drink the original bottled contents and refill it with tap water. It really makes a difference waking up in the morning.
Tonight, I pack up the "remote lab" and return home for the remainder of 2012. Kagami will get some well-earned time off, too, having been working steadily Since mid-October.

Crawley Camera Club meets in a wooden hut at the Tilgate Recreation Area in the woods. It gets a bit damp so we bought this de-humidifier, which seems to have made a difference 😀
When Violet was a bit congested, the pediatrician recommended that we use a humidifier. Having grown up less than two miles from the ocean, I spent my life around dehumidifiers, so the concept of having to humidify a room seemed a bit strange. But after seeing this adorable penguin humidifier, all my concerns disappeared. How could I resist?

They didn't understand me when I said that there was actually nothing inside the humidifier. Really, all I did for this photo was remove the cover.
Replacement kit has been installed, but we're still working on making it function correctly.
Blogged on wonderment.

The Biotope
Inside the pavilion, the centrepiece: is an 18m giant green cone covered in edible plants, irrigated with the harvested water. On the inside, this food cone has the perfect conditions for growing oyster mushrooms. Its design helps keeping the pavilion cool. The humidified air, rich in CO2, also aids in the growth of the edible plants on the exterior of the cone.

To meet the growing demand for water, energy and food, we must find a balance between maintaining resources long term and maximising what we use. Visit the Netherlands Pavilion to immerse yourself in our miniature world to join the conversation on how we can connect minds to secure water, energy and food. We bring together innovations on the crossroads of circular water management, agriculture and food, and clean energy.
The Netherlands pavilion at Expo 2020 is designed as a biotope, or miniature circular climate system. Here we show how the water, energy and food sectors can be linked to develop innovative solutions for solving global challenges - even in the world’s most challenging climates. Enter this world, and smell, breathe and wonder. Let your senses experience the connection between water, energy and food.
We grow food, harvest water and generate electricity, all in a naturally controlled climate system. At the centre of the pavilion sits a giant green food cone. On the outside this vertical farm is covered with edible plants, the cold, dark and humid inside is perfect for growing mushrooms. A solar-powered Rainmaker turns desert air into a continuous supply of safe and clean water, while solar cells in the pavilion’s solar cells provide the Rainmaker with electricity. At the same time, these skylights allow sunlight into the pavilion, which the plants need for photosynthesis. The result is a perfectly circular miniature biosphere.

Hearst Tower in New York City, New York is located at 300 West 57th Street on Eighth Avenue, near Columbus Circle. It is the world headquarters of the Hearst Corporation, bringing together for the first time their numerous publications and communications companies under one roof, including Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and the San Francisco Chronicle, to name a few.
The former six-story headquarters building was commissioned by the founder, William Randolph Hearst and awarded to the architect Joseph Urban. The building was completed in 1928, and the original cast stone facade has been preserved in the new design as a designated Landmark site. Originally built as the base for a proposed skyscraper, the construction of the tower was postponed due to the Great Depression. The new tower addition was completed nearly eighty years later, and 2000 Hearst employees moved in on 4 May 2006. [1]
The tower – designed by the architecture firm of Foster and Partners – is 46 stories tall, standing 182 m (597 ft) with 80,000 m² (856,000 ft²) of office space. The uncommon triangular framing pattern (also known as a diagrid) required 9,500 metric tons (10,480 tons) of structural steel – reportedly about 20% less than a conventional steel frame. Hearst Tower was the first skyscraper to break ground in New York City after September 11, 2001. The building received the 2006 Emporis Skyscraper Award [1], citing it as the best skyscraper in the world completed that year.
Hearst Tower is the first green building completed in New York City, with a number of environmental considerations built into the plan. The floor of the atrium is paved with heat conductive limestone. Polyethylene tubing is embedded under the floor and filled with circulating water for cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. Rain collected on the roof is stored in a tank in the basement for use in the cooling system, to irrigate plants and for the water sculpture in the main lobby. Overall, the building has been designed to use 25% less energy than the minimum requirements for the city of New York, and earned a gold designation from the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification program.
The atrium features escalators which run through a 3-story water sculpture titled Icefall, a wide waterfall built with thousands of glass panels, which cools and humidifies the lobby air. The water element is complemented by a 70-foot (21.3 m) tall fresco painting entitled Riverlines by artist Richard Long.

We bought a volcano-shaped humidifier today to help relieve dry skin and static build-up in the dry winter air. Here it is erupting in slow motion.

When I see an old humidifier, I pick it up. I have owned several of the new ones and they never last more than a season or they don't put out much steam. Plus, the filters are too expensive. I remember as a kid my parents using these often during winter. We use them too. If you have a sinus cold, allergies or an infection, these can work wonders.
Hokkaido winters tend to be excessively dry (somewhat like California summers). My skin is usually very itchy and dry every winter here, and there is a lot of static. To help reduce the static and increase the humidity upstairs, I resurrected out humidifier and turned it on upstairs. (We found out that the humidifier is bad for our kitchen heater, which is why we aren't using it downstairs.) Don't know if the humidifier will make a difference or not, but it's worth a try...

Opps!!
music and chimney photo by Judy Dehaney
There's nothing more fitting than having too much fun and not really thinking things through before thoroughly soaking ones camera with a bucket of water! I'd realized a good split second before it hit the ground that I'd thrown it a little too far :)
I've added a bucket/hose attachment to the de-humidifier so that now it only has to be emptied once a day.. Getting the basement drain-pipe to actually drain is next on my list.
Tomorrow we'll do another box of pear/plum preserves before they turn on us..
The barn, tree branches, iron/water filters, creosote, storage, a new chimney and the de-humidifier are just a few things left to take care of before I leave. I'll do my best to resist a sojourn when I'm finished here and back in Prague! On that note, I hope to finally have steady "paying" work *and* my impalpable Czech Trade License at hand before the end of November (I won't believe it until I see it :)
"From the cruiser" by Wendy Elliott
We did our weekly trip into town today. One of the local newspapers has an RCMP (police) update. Here are just a few of the reports from around here:
"A woman as reported drinking all day October 16 outside an eatery in Kingston."
"A group of young adults was playing football in traffic on Gaspereau Ave. in Wolfville. They were located and warned of the danger."
"Police were asked to identify a possible counterfeit $10 bill."
"A Gaspereau Ave. resident reported an young adult dumping food waste off a fire escape at 11:29 p.m."
