In late Spring 2012, I was walking on a section of town greenway I'd not previously explored. I walked through the woods and discovered a patch of wetland, full of life, right in the middle of upper-class suburbia. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This acre-or-so of land held several red-headed woodpeckers, other woodpeckers and songbirds, as well as the occasional green or great blue heron. On a subsequent visit, I even saw a juvenile little blue heron. I was making mental plans to rent a 500mm lens to try to get some decent photos of the red-headed woodpeckers. I thought I might even just bring a chair some mornings and sit and watch the woodpeckers do what they do.
Then, only a couple of weeks after discovering it, I took a walk to this new favorite place of mine and found all of the old trees--the red-headed woodpeckers' homes, that is--to have been felled by some human land-developer juggernaut, complete with stakes with pink tape and tracks made by heavy equipment. I was heartbroken. I'm sure the woodpeckers weren't too happy about it either. I still walk by the spot occasionally; I've yet to see anything more than a passing titmouse, nuthatch, or kinglet since my fellow humans came and destroyed the land's soul.

If it looks like Millie is slightly inebriated then that’s because she was, poor girl. I actually went over to ask if she was OK, as she was sat in the doorway in such a way that made me notice her. She claimed she was OK, just a little hungover, from what sounded like a heavy night.
After talking for a bit, I decided not to take her picture but then her cousin came along and Millie announced happily that she was having her photo taken so I couldn’t back out.
By the way, the reason I replied as I did was because I think that given the cost of University these days, it seems somewhat frivolous not to have a career path in mind - anything better than nothing. That’s my way of looking at it anyway.
No messing with the eyes here, they were that blue!

Close to two million people hit the streets on Sunday (16th June 2019) to call on the Hong Kong government to withdraw a controversial extradition bill, according to organisers.
The Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) figure represents 28.5 per cent of the city’s population, and would make the demonstration the largest in Hong Kong history.
It is almost double the turnout figure they gave for last Sunday’s anti-extradition law protest.
Police claimed 338,000 joined the designated walking route at the peak of the demonstration.
The CHRF – a coalition of pro-democracy groups – said the turnout was almost two million “plus one,” to represent a man who fell to his death on Saturday while protesting the bill. Protesters on Sunday wore all black and carried white funeral flowers to honour the 35-year-old man surnamed Leung.
Hong Kong proposed legal amendments in February to allow the city to handle case-by-case extradition requests from jurisdictions with no prior agreements, most notably China and Taiwan.
The bill would enable the chief executive and local courts to handle extradition requests without legislative oversight, although lawyers, journalists, foreign politicians and businesses have raised concerns over the risk of residents being extradited to the mainland, which lacks human rights protections.
On Saturday, following months of criticism, the government said it would postpone the bill and explain it further to the public.

【明報專訊】《逃犯條例》修訂風波不斷升溫，即使行政長官林鄭月娥前日宣布暫緩修例仍未能平息民憤，民陣昨日再度發起遊行，重申要求撤回修例及林太下台，遊行人潮由上周日的白衣換成黑衣，由「痛心疾首」與「撤回惡法」兩幅黑白直幡帶領，再由白晝走到黑夜。警方罕有先後全數開放軒尼詩道、駱克道、莊士敦道、謝斐道和告士打道西行線，予整天不絕的人潮。遊行歷時逾8小時才結束，民陣稱近200萬人參與，屬歷來最高遊行人數，警方則估計經原定遊行路線最高峰人數約33.8萬。
政府昨晚於遊行未結束已發聲明回應，林鄭月娥承認因為政府工作的不足，令社會出現很大矛盾和紛爭，令市民失望和痛心，就事件向市民致歉。政府強調已停止立法會大會對修訂《逃犯條例》的工作，冀社會盡快回復平靜和避免任何人受傷；但至今日凌晨截稿，大批遊行者仍未散去，在夏愨道和特首辦外聚集。

Martedì 13 marzo 2017 nell’Aula Magna dell’Università di Pavia, si è tenuto il meeting Human Brain Project. I protagonisti italiani di uno dei maggiori progetti di ricerca europei, finanziato con 1,2 miliardi di euro, si ritrovati per fare il punto su quanto realizzato finora e per presentare il neonato gruppo di coordinamento nazionale, che si prefigge lo scopo di potenziare e prolungare nel tempo i benefici che HBP ha già portato alla ricerca italiana in termini di collaborazioni e sviluppo di piattaforme tecnologiche.
HBP è uno dei maggiori progetti mondiali per lo studio del cervello, arrivato al suo quarto anno di attività sui 10 previsti. Il progetto si prefigge lo scopo di produrre modelli su ampia scala delle funzioni cerebrali e di generare avanzamenti nella prevenzione e nella cura delle malattie neurologiche e psichiatriche, così come nel settore della neuroinformatica e della tecnologia. L’Italia è in prima fila con un gruppo di laboratori di punta che operano nei settori della ricerca biologica, informatica, robotica e sanitaria. Il progetto è finanziato per circa 1.2 miliardi di Euro in 10 anni (dal 2013 al 2022) e comprende al momento circa 120 laboratori in Europa.
HBP è un progetto flagship con missione di orientamento e aggregazione della ricerca. L’Italia è all’avanguardia nella costituzione di un gruppo nazionale che sta interagendo con i ministeri competenti (MIUR, MINSAL, MISE) e con il CNR per la coordinazione ed espansione delle attività di ricerca a livello nazionale. Fin dall’avvio i partecipanti italiani dello Human Brain Project, riconoscendo la rilevanza scientifica e le finalità del progetto, hanno concordano sull’importanza di parteciparvi in modo congiunto e sinergico, avviando una collaborazione sistematica di interesse istituzionale per mettere in comune le proprie conoscenze nel settore di riferimento del progetto stesso e definire nello specifico le azioni da svolgere nei confronti del panorama nazionale, coinvolgendo proattivamente enti governativi, enti locali, soggetti privati, industria, fondazioni e altri soggetti, anche al fine di acquisire finanziamenti per le attività oggetto della collaborazione. I partner italiani hanno sancito un accordo e hanno eletto come delegato il Prof. Francesco Saverio Pavone in qualità di Presidente del Comitato di Coordinamento della comunità HBP Italia.
L’Italia è il primo tra i paesi membri di HBP che abbia costituito una comunità nazionale e abbia già avviato un tavolo di lavoro in cui sono stati coinvolti rappresentanti del MIUR e del Ministero della Salute, per proporre un’azione sinergica integrata per mettere a frutto le elevate competenze dei gruppi di ricerca italiani, di HBP e non, con la rete IRCCS delle neuroscienze. Tale iniziativa è portata avanti tramite il CNR, in quanto Hub italiano per HBP Europa.
Partendo da 4 core-partners iniziali (Università di Pavia, Università di Firenze, Politecnico di Torino e CINECA), l’Italia ha accorpato ulteriori istituzioni tramite Open Calls, progetti ERANET, Partnering Projects, Third Parties e Convenzioni raggiungendo le 16 unità di ricerca effettive:

Franti's energy level is just amazing -- he's constantly in motion, and popped up in several parts of the audience as well as inviting people on stage to dance.
The positive message of most of his recent songs really fit the message of "Life is Good" perfectly.
After the last Ice Age, as the climate became warmer and rainfall more abundant, the formerly nomadic population of the eastern Mediterranean began to establish the first permanent settlements. The site of Eynan/Ain Mallaha, situated between the hills of Galilee and Lake Hula in the Levant, was inhabited from 10,000 to 8200 B.C. during the Natufian period. Eynan (in Hebrew)/Ain Mallaha (in Arabic) is one of hundreds of Natufian settlements known from the eastern Mediterranean, where remains of a rich and dynamic artistic tradition have been discovered.
Natufian art, while it follows some of the same representational conventions of the European Paleolithic in its naturalistic and sensitive portrayal of animals, reflects a new awareness of individual identity and social life. Natufian burials, often placed in close proximity to the homes of the living, have been found where individuals or groups are interred with elaborate jewelry made of bone, shell, and stone. These are materials found readily in the Mediterranean landscape, but were fashioned by skilled artists to mark the importance and social standing of their buried ancestors.
Human representations are both schematic and naturalistic. The stone head from Eynan/Ain Mallaha illustrated here was carved from limestone using flint knives and chisels. Traces of the artist's tool marks are still visible. The eyes, formed by three concentric curving lines, dominate the lower portion of the face, which has been bisected by a broad horizontal band across the center of the stone. The upper portion of the head, slightly damaged, is incised with diagonal lines, which may represent hair or ornamentation. The base is flat, indicating that it was probably intended to sit upright.

My favourite photo / costume. the poor kid in the shark costume was dying of heat stroke. but he/she was so sporty. I asked for photo and the sharky waved at me. and when i asked if sharky was hot, a little muffled voice said "uh huh!"

This fellow spent some time in an office recycling bin this morning, and eventually I took him out and released him near some trees and shrubs.
It surprised me how similar he is to the rats -- when he washed his face or tried to jump up the wall, he moved in exactly the same way they do, only in miniature. Since the rats are already like miniature people, it was extra extra cute. Look at that little face!
My office uses glue traps, which are horrible and inhumane, so I'm glad that he was spared that sort of capture.
