Mosaico del Juicio de Paris.

 

Formaba parte, junto a otros seis, de la pavimentación de una villa romana de finales del siglo IV y principios del V, localizada en Casariche (Sevilla). Representa la escena mitológica del Juicio de París, en la que el héroe concede una manzana de oro como trofeo de belleza, a la diosa Venus-Afrodita, ofendiendo así a las derrotadas Minerva-Atenea y Juno-Hera, todas presentes en el juicio ordenado por Zeus.

«Mosaico de las Cuatro Estaciones.

Mármol, caliza, pasta vítrea.

Siglo III d.C.

Museo de Santa Cruz de Toledo. N.º Inventario 935.

Procedente de la Vega Baja de Toledo, muy cerca del río Tajo, en terrenos pertenecientes a la Fábrica Nacional de Armas Blancas.

 

En este mosaico se distinguen dos zonas decorativas, un cuadrado central con distintos temas figurados y el espacio alrededor cubierto por motivos geométricos.

 

En el centro se aprecia un medallón circular figurando el mar, con variedad de peces, moluscos y crustáceos, rodeado de guirnaldas vegetales y geométricas. Se encuadra por una cinta de sogueado que original diversos compartimentos que albergan los motivos ornamentales. En las esquinas las cuatro estaciones con objetos y plantas relacionados con las mismas y en los espacios intermedios se sitúan lunetos semicirculares con edificios, estatuas, la proa de un barco y un timón.»

Assembled in Hugin from 6 pictures, 4 at 90 degree intervals plus zenith and nadir. Shot on a Canon 60D with Rokinon 8mm lens.

This one was aligned and fused from a bracketed exposure stack using Hugin instead of by hand with GIMP layers.

i wish i could have done a better job (a) of capturing the river's continuation at right (b) of adequately conveying the sense of space: the foreground was slopping away at about 45 degrees before dropping into the abyss.
