Koroit Commercial Road Conservation Area

Source: Go to the Register of the National Estate for more information.

Identifier: 15046

Location: Commercial Rd, Koroit

Local

Government: Moyne Shire

State: VIC

Country: Australia

Statement of

Significance: The conservation area consists of a number of important public buildings and a street of relatively intact humble shopfronts and kerbline verandahs, visually punctuated by opposing bank facades. Containing a range of late nineteenth century and early twentieth century structures, the conservation area strongly evokes a sense of the town's past (Criterion E.1).

Description: Koroit is located some miles to the north of the main coastal road, the Princes Highway, and is approximately midway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy. It lies on the northern slopes of the volcanic Tower Hill, enjoying the benefits of rich soil and shelter from the weather from the Southern Ocean. The qualities of the soil have long made the district suitable to intensive cultivation, producing abundant crops of potatoes, onions and peas, usually in association with diary cattle, pigs and fat lambs. The area also once produced mustard, linseed, wheat and oats. The township of Koroit developed to serve the needs of the district. The close settlement and small holdings allowed Koroit to grow into a larger town than would normally be expected within a short distance (17km) from the regional centre, Warrnambool, and from Port Fairy which is 20km distant. The predominant green of year round cultivation and the scale of the district's holdings and buildings have led many observers to see a similarity with Irish landscapes. Commercial Road, the main street of Koroit, is a flat, straight stretch of road. This is the commercial and administrative centre of Koroit and contains a number of interesting late nineteenth and early twentieth century shops, dwellings and public buildings. The focal point of the commercial/administrative precinct is the group of public buildings near the intersection of Boundary/Commercial Road and High Street. Included are the municipal offices and the bluestone post office. The latter was built in 1872 and is of special significance through its link with author Henry Handel (Ethel) Richardson whose mother was postmistress here in 1878; Ethel's father died in Koroit in 1879 and the author used the town for the setting of the third novel in her trilogy, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony. Also included within this precinct are the courthouse (1871-72), and the state school (1878). Also of note at the intersection is the decorative Koroit Hotel with detailing showing Art Nouveau influence (especially in the verandah). Diagonally opposite is the Courthouse Inn, an interesting Edwardian weatherboard building now unlicensed but still used for accommodation. The Commercial Road shopping area runs west from this intersection, consisting primarily of single storey shops although the State Savings Bank and, directly opposite, the National Bank are exceptions. The National Bank in its present form dates from c 1872 when architect George Jobbins was commissioned to remodel the facade and to erect an additional storey. Jobbins was also commissioned to design the premises of the Colonial Bank of Australasia (now the State Savings Bank) in 1876. The design of this bank closely relates to the National Bank in Warrnambool (1868-69) designed by Lloyd Tayler, Jobbins' former employer. Though there are a number of later intrusions in the Commercial Road area, some of them unfortunate, the prevailing kerbline verandah posts and valances are still sufficient to evoke a strong sense of the town's past. This is emphasised by the town's relative isolation, being by passed by all the major district highways.

A late September 2018 visit to Packwood House, another National Trust property. Been meaning to visit this one myself for a while now!

A nice cool Sunday afternoon to visit Packwood.

Packwood House is a timber-framed Tudor manor house near Lapworth, Warwickshire. Owned by the National Trust since 1941, the house is a Grade I listed building. It has a wealth of tapestries and fine furniture, and is known for the garden of yews.

The house began as a modest timber-framed farmhouse constructed for John Fetherston between 1556 and 1560. The last member of the Fetherston family died in 1876. In 1904 the house was purchased by Birmingham industrialist Alfred Ash. It was inherited by Graham Baron Ash (Baron in this case being a name not a title) in 1925, who spent the following two decades creating a house of Tudor character. He purchased an extensive collection of 16th- and 17th-century furniture, some obtained from nearby Baddesley Clinton. The great barn of the farm was converted into a Tudor-style hall with sprung floor for dancing, and was connected to the main house by the addition of a Long Gallery in 1931.

In 1941, Ash donated the house and gardens to the National Trust in memory of his parents but continued to live in the house until 1947 when he moved to Wingfield Castle.

Trim Castle is a Norman castle located on the south bank of the River Boyne in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. With an area of 30,000 m², it is the largest Cambro-Norman castle in Ireland. Over a period of 30 years, it was built by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath and his son Walter as the caput of the Lordship of Meath.

My previous post covered some of the basic ideas my fellow workshoppers and I considered on the University of Chicago campus last month. I wanted today to share with you some of the images that came from my efforts.

If you go back to my previous post and think about the rules I listed and then tried to sum those up in a single expression it might go something like this: make images with a narrative.

The story you are telling is inevitably a mix of your photographic experience and the subject, but by creating images that give the viewer someplace to go, you can invite the audience to inhabit your photo as well and populate it with their own stories. In these images I want you to come along and see the beauty of this campus as I see it.

As Ansel Adams famously said, “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.”

The popular and free ¡VAMOS! Picnic held Summerhill Bowling Club lawn marked the middle weekend of the ¡VAMOS! Festival running between 6 to 22 June with events across the North East celebrating Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures.

Carnival Queens from Elemental Dance performed carnival dance on the lawn, followed by dance demonstrations and classes including Afrocuban Salsa by Yersin Rivas Dance Troupe, Zumba by Christina Francotte and Capoiera by Mestre Gato. The afternoon was rounded off with a live music from the amazing Afro-Brazilian 7 piece band Da Lata, winners of Best Brazilian Act of 2013 in the UK Lukas Awards and DJ Patrick Forge

The event had a Portuguese and Brazilian Festas Juninas theme, a traditional midsummer festival held in Portugal and later introduced to Brazil celebrate rural life and a celebrated with typical traditional costumes, food and dancing. ¡VAMOS! recreated this colourful, lively extravaganza with Brazilian folk dance, Djs, activities and games for children, traditional Quadrilha country dancing food and costumes. The Festas Juninas theme and events was organised by Professor Loiana Leal from Newcastle University with support from Newcastle University’s Engage programme.

The ¡VAMOS! Family Picnic hosted the second public appearance of ¡VAMOS! Festival Pavilion decorated with especially commissioned designs by Brazilian graphic artist Flavio Morais and supported by Arts Council England and ¡VAMOS! Festivals own food stall ¡PICA PICA! selling a contemporary twist on Latin street food. The public were also able to explore an architectural installation in which they could experience sounds of Latin America designed by Architecture student Fabian Danker in collaboration with digital media artist Lalya Gaye and audio artist James Armstrong. Finally, the popular Moon Booth invited the audience to become a #LocoHero at a specially designed photo stand.

2011-09-10 Sichtbar werden mit Folie Gradinger, Tipp3-Bundesliga powered by T-Mobile, 7. Runde, 10.09.2011, Trenkwalder Admira vs. SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz 4:2 (3:0), Trenkwalder-Arena, 8.079 Zuschauer, SR Grobelnik

Aufstellung Trenkwalder Admira: Tischler - Plassnegger, Windbichler, Dibon, Palla (46./Schrott) - Seebacher, Schachner, Schwab, Jezek - Ouedraogo (74./B. Sulimani), Hosiner (80./Toth)

Sufstellung SK Sturm Graz: Gratzei - Standfest, Dudic (46./Feldhofer), T. Burgstaller, Popchadse - Hölzl, S. Foda (74./Muratovic), Weber, Bukva (46./P. Wolf) - Szabics, Bodul

Torfolge: 1:0 Ouedraogo (6.), 2:0 Hosiner (22.), 3:0 Schachner (44.), 3:1 Szabics (57.), 3:2 Bodul (72.), 4:2 B. Sulimani (88.)

Gelb-Rote Karte: Bodul (83./Schiedsrichterkritik), Gelbe Karten: Schwab, Seebacher, Ouedraogo bzw. Dudic, Standfest, Weber, Popchadse

My Ride had a cold miss on cold mornings. It only missed for about 30 seconds then would run just fine. I figure it was needing a tune-up since it has over 135k miles and I'm sure it has never had one. Cost me around $50 in parts; a new distributor cap, ignition rotor, 6 spark plugs and spark plug wires. I bought them from NAPA. Took me a couple of hours. The hardest thing about it was the console cover. Pain to remove and install because of the carpeting.

FRAMES TO MY MUSIC VIDEO: COME BACK SPARKIN

WATCH IT HERE:

vimeo.com/27967009

COME BACK SPARKIN is the title of this song and its music video.

SPARKIN should be spelled SPARKING, but I chose to spell it the way I pronounce it.

This is how I create language.

I grew up in urban environments and slang talk has always been my preferred way of expressing myself.

I always loved the level of creativity that could be applied to a language, and the power slang has in societies.

To COME BACK SPARKIN is to come back from a difficult situation while creating something absolutely beautiful out of it.

It is the act of overcoming an obstacle or obstacles no matter the level of difficulty.

We have the power as SuperHumans to take advantage of every situation.

In this song, I first remind myself, that I am the one who chooses to feel down or up, no one else:

No matter what i go through, it can't get me down

Go ahead, take a shot at me. All you are going to do is fuel the beast. In other words, help me excel to the next level:

I'm a Warrior at heart, kick me down !

See what happens, I COME BACK SPARKIN

Some individuals do a whole lot of talking, but their actions do not match their blah blah blah.

Or they spend most of their time talking, while never truly accomplishing and doing something about what they are talking about:

While you're barkin, I move in action !

Realising that I have no one to talk to and spending my time by myself because no one around me is real enough, or I do not relate to them:

Very lonely, no one to talk to

I gain consciousness of my HumanPower , and I choose to Keep My Head Up as Tupac told us.

Keep My Head Up, as I walk through

Dark tunnels, with no light dude

I then realize who I am: I'm the Light Myself.

This is the path of the Warrior. Check out Warrior of Light by Paolo Coehlo if you don't understand this.

I then invite those that feel the way I do to listen to me because I live it like you, and I am uplifting myself.

So join me, and we can lift ourselves together.

Listen to my music, if you need help

Coz I give you energy

The Power and the Will to overcome your enemy

When I say enemy some may think that I am talking about a person outside of themselves, but I am not:

Which is the ego, your own self

Get deeper into your self. Understand that money is a tool, and not the answer to life:

Money is a distraction

The answer to all is within you:

The True Wealth is the Inner

I am not one of those people who thinks money is evil and who does not want money.

I'm a physical being with 5 physical senses, so I enjoy things money allows me to do.

I want to be clear that this is not an anti-money campaign, it is about understanding its role and purpose in our lives.

I do not claim to have the answers, what I do is invite others to my journey.

I recorded this song 3 years ago, and so, being that I have evolved a lot since, I chose to focus this music video on these lyrics and not the remainder of the song.

They no longer apply to who I am today like they did when I wrote them.

The Art Direction of this music video is a continuation of my project THE REBIRTH in which I created an imaginary world where the unreal becomes real.

The quality of this Music Video is very poor, the camera was old and busted, so this is what it is.

I think it's cool to have the quality this fucked up because it's such a huge contrast to crisp HD imagery.

I love crisp HD quality as well :)

Lyrics:

No matter what i go through, it can't get me down

I'm a Warrior at heart, kick me down !

See what happens, I COME BACK SPARKIN

While you're barkin, I move in action !

I'm on a mission !

Very lonely, no one to talk to

Keep My Head Up, as I walk through

Dark tunnels, with no light dude

Actually, I'm The Light Myself

Listen to my music, if you need help

Coz I give you energy

The Power and the Will to overcome your enemy

Which is the ego, your own self

Money is a distraction

The True Wealth is the Inner

This screen shot is servicing as a link to a photo-gallery by Alexander Dundid, a Kamov-27 helicopter navigator who served on the 'Admiral Kuznetsov' aircarrier, Russian Navy.

Check it out too.

When you reach THIS PAGE, click on the right panel images to get into the gallery's folders. I've put notes opening the first two of those folders.

My pleasure to present it as a 'special treat' to TailspinT.

Bepo and Co

Step right up for tonight... tonight the past invades the present, yet the show must go on. Bepo’s band of rap-tag troubadours present an evening’s entertainment: leaping from memory to memory, six circus performers reveal a century through their eyes... Unwish Theatre return from a triumphant sell out run at Edinburgh Fringe 2010 to bring to the stage Bepo & Co. The show’s premise is that of a rag-tag band of troupadours: 6 veteran circus performers who have managed to survive on their wits for the entirety of the 20th century. They now tell their history, in the only way they know how - an evening’s entertainment leaping from memory to memory. The only thing that keeps them going is their eternal youth – physically not one of them has aged a day since the beginning of 1900. They travel from Tsarist Russia, through the American Circus’ golden-age, are caught up in the great depression, escape through South American revolutions, dance their way through mid-century Europe, witness the fall of Berlin wall and the burning of the Iraq oil fields. Join them tonight in a world where train-crashes, massacres, wars and personal struggles sit alongside perfect moments. See members the troupe fall in love beneath an Argentine sun, find meaning in a stranger’s embrace, save each other from self-destruction, and most importantly learn that sometimes you have to stop running and face up to the world. As each character faces their hardest memory you may come to understand them and their belief that even though the past invades the present, the show must go on.
