Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second largest city. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts, 6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction.

From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945), but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Việt Nam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War. Source: en.wikipedia.org

About The Pirate Fairy

From the world of “Peter Pan” comes “The Pirate Fairy,” a swashbuckling new adventure about Zarina (voice of Christina Hendricks), a smart and ambitious dust-keeper fairy who’s captivated by Blue Pixie Dust and its endless possibilities. When Zarina’s wild ideas get her into trouble, she flees Pixie Hollow and joins forces with the scheming pirates of Skull Rock, who make her captain of their ship. Tinker Bell (voice of Mae Whitman) and her friends must embark on an epic adventure to find Zarina, and together they go sword-to-sword with the band of pirates led by a cabin boy named James (voice of Tom Hiddleston), who’ll soon be known as Captain Hook himself. With laughter, heart, magic and thrills, “The Pirate Fairy” sets sail April 1, 2014.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, pronounced [tsʰépìːʔ ǹtsɪ̀skɑ̀ìː], meaning "valley of the rocks") is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. The most famous butte formations are located in northeastern Arizona along the Utah–Arizona state line. The valley is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, the Native American people within whose reservation it lies.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Famed director John Ford used the location for a number of his Westerns. Film critic Keith Phipps wrote that "its five square miles [13 km2] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West".

History

Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau.

Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today.

From the visitor center, you see the world-famous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

Been here a few times never happy due to the light and sky until today worth the £6 entrance fee as the gardens and flowers looked amazing.Think my job is done at this amazing location ;-)

An ancient site dating back to the 7th century was originally owned by the church but later acquired by the Button family in the 16th century. The name was changed to Dyffryn St. Thomas when the estate was sold to Thomas Pryce, who built the first building to be known as Dyffryn House. John Cory bought the estate in 1891 and built the present house two years later. He later commissioned Thomas Mawson to landscape the gardens to complement his magnificent house. After John Cory's death in 1910, his third son, Reginald, a keen horticulturalist and leading figure in the RHS, developed the gardens and arboretum notably through his joint sponsorship of several plant hunting expeditions. The most remarkable of the results of this is the Paper Bark Maple, Acer griseum, which was grown from seed brought back from China by Ernest Wilson.

After Reginald Cory's death in 1934, the estate went to his daughter Florence who died just two years later. It was then bought by Sir Cennydd Traherne who leased it in 1939 to Glamorgan County Council on a 999 year lease. The Grade I listed gardens are being restored in two phases with grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The first phase is for £3.25 million and the second for £2.9 million.

Storied Atlanta journalist Dick Williams died Thursday from congestive heart failure. He was 77.

He worked for TV broadcasters around the country, including some of the national giants, before settling into Atlanta. Here, he was a three-medium threat. He worked for newspapers at The Atlanta Journal and later ran a small newspaper, and he did political radio. But the weekly televised news talk show “The Georgia Gang,” which began as the “Sunday News Conference” in the early 1980s on WSB-TV, was his pride and joy.

Over 36 years, Williams taped more than 1,700 episodes, starting in the early 1980s when Atlanta children were going missing and murdered. Over the years, he parsed every major Atlanta City Hall scandal, pontificated on the tenures of six city mayors, assessed the Olympics arrival and legacy, picked apart downtown development and watched Georgia’s political winds shift. It continues to be broadcast, but he retired in 2019.

Williams told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution then: “I’m proud that this program stayed on the air 36 years. That’s pretty remarkable. I’m always gratified by the sheer number of people who watch the show and engage in it across all walks of life and income levels. It’s amazing.”

“He was an affable guy and also incredibly prolific,” said Jeff Dickerson, who worked for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the 1980s and 1990s and was a “Georgia Gang” panelist.

“He’d start a column at 10:02 a.m. and have it ready at 10:17 a.m. He was amazingly fast. At one point, he was writing three, four columns a week as well as a bunch of unsigned editorials.”

The conservative Williams co-hosted a radio show with liberal Tom Houck in the 1980s.

“He was a die-hard Reagan conservative back then,” said Houck, who also was part of “The Georgia Gang.” At the same time, Houck said he and Williams loved covering election nights on the radio. “We’d set aside ideology for a night and focus on who’s winning and who’s losing,” he said.

Williams grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Georgetown University, where he became friends with fellow student and future president Bill Clinton. “Our connections are mostly personal, not political,” Williams said.

Early in his career, he worked under CBS News president Fred Friendly and wrote copy for the likes of Harry Reasoner, Charles Osgood and Pat Summerall. He later moved to broadcast TV in Albany, New York, where he covered the Woodstock music festival and Sen. Ted Kennedy’s Chappaquiddick accident.

He later worked in Baltimore and Miami before venturing to Atlanta in 1976. Here, he first was a director at WXIA-TV but didn’t care for it and convinced Atlanta Journal editor Jim Minter to give him a job as a writer. Williams was first an investigative reporter and a city editor before becoming a columnist for the afternoon newspaper.

Rick Allen, his close friend and a former panelist on “The Georgia Gang,” said Williams was liberal in one area, race. “Many conservatives were motivated by resistance to civil rights. But Dick wasn’t like that,” he said. “He had a keen admiration for the Black leaders in Atlanta. He had a particularly high opinion of Andy Young,” the former civil rights activist, mayor, Georgia congressman and United Nations ambassador.

In 1995, Williams wrote a book about politician Newt Gingrich, whom he befriended before Gingrich became speaker of the House of Representatives. “I always enjoyed talking to Dick because he always had common-sense insights,” Gingrich told the AJC. “He was a significant force in Georgia television... It was a great honor to have him write a book about me, and it reflected our many decades of friendship.”

Williams always loved small-town newspapers and purchased the Dunwoody Crier in 1996. At its peak, the paper had eight full-time employees. He was particularly proud of its coverage of the 1998 tornado that obliterated 3,000 Dunwoody homes.

He spent a lot of time covering the cityhood movement in Atlanta’s suburbs, and his paper supported the creation of Dunwoody, Brookhaven and Peachtree Corners.

“The Dunwoody Crier really brought the community together before Facebook and social media,” said Fran Millar, a close friend and former Georgia state legislator. “He’s a major reason why so many people voted for cityhood” in 2008.

With his health declining, his wife and fellow journalist Rebecca Chase fighting cancer, and newspapers suffering from declining readership and income, Williams decided to sell his beloved Crier in 2019. He said near the end that he was not paying himself and was investing his savings in it to keep it going.

“I am not a businessman,” Williams said in 2019. “I am a newspaper man... We’ve been living off the land for several years and it was driving me crazy.”

Away from journalism, Williams enjoyed refereeing high school basketball games, an avocation he did for more than 40 years.

Chris Curle, who was married to the late WSB-TV anchor Don Farmer, was family friends with Williams and Chase for decades. She said Williams was a vacuum of information. His desk in his den “was a fire hazard, piled high with various periodicals and half-opened books and stacks of newspapers,” she said.

And he was the type of person who wouldn’t just say he liked a particular book, he’d analyze the plotlines and the characters in an entertainingly forensic fashion, Curle said. He was the same with meals. “He’d tell you not only how good or bad the oysters were, but where they came from and, ‘Oh, did you hear about that problem with oyster harvesting?’ That’s the way he was.”

Williams is survived by two daughters Chase Cooper and Clare Steven.

more here about the Biennale :

Ralph Rugoff has declared: «May You Live in Interesting Times will no doubt include artworks that reflect upon precarious aspects of existence today, including different threats to key traditions, institutions and relationships of the “post-war order.” But let us acknowledge at the outset that art does not exercise its forces in the domain of politics. Art cannot stem the rise of nationalist movements and authoritarian governments in different parts of the world, for instance, nor can it alleviate the tragic fate of displaced peoples across the globe (whose numbers now represent almost one percent of the world’s entire population).»

My brother and I had a design studio in the past, and I did all of the Celtics promotional work for several years through our client SportsChannel of New England. Paul Freehauf (Eagle Rock Entertainment) was the Creative Director there and we did all the design and production. I also designed the Boston Celtics' Sixth Player trophy that was sponsored through Texaco. It was retired after Reggie Lewis was awarded it. There is more info in the first comment too if you like. My gwennie2006 account is not pro right now, but everything is still here through site searches (described below). My GrfxDziner account is pro and has full size images. Here is a link to that account at flickr...

I also did many of the commercials for MVP sports at the time. The Johnny Most announcement in that Top 10 qwikLoadr link was used on one in particular. The Bird's Back poster in the first comment was created when Larry Bird came back early from injury, and given out at the game. The World Championship poster from 1986 was also given out at the first Boston Garden game of the 1986-1987 season. SportsChannel had no budget for the poster, so the folks who worked on it received credit on the poster, as well as 150 limited prints. The plates were destroyed once the printing was complete. Mark Burton of Boston, Massachusetts was the official printer, and that is their logo bottom left on the poster.

Title "Artsy Scrappy Mama" by Julie Ann Shahin

I decided my self-portrait would be a paper mache art doll because I didn't want to buy something, although I did look in a few stores. I wanted to actually make something and get my hands dirty, yet actually I wore "kitchen gloves" for the messy part! The wire mesh for the dress is no accident, I want you to see through it, to see the body has vintage sewing pattern tissue paper on it. I also wanted to attach items to the dress so this wire worked great, it is called "WireForm by Paragon" or "WireMesh by Paragon" depending on whether you want copper, brass, or aluminum diamond. Pam asked me what her name is, and I decided to name her "Artsy Scrappy Mama" because I wanted to show you a self-portrait of me in my studio, which is painted yellow, where I am happy and thriving.

The items on her dress include a cupcake charm (!!!), a handmade rose (tutorial coming soon), a deer brad because I see deer in my neighborhood all the time, a heart brad, an imagine charm for creativity and a nod to John Lennon, and a pin I saved from a trip to Toronto.

My technique: I wanted to use things that were on hand for paper mache. Make note of everything I recycled!

* The doll body was constructed from a toilet paper roll for the torso,

* and a wad of newspaper rolled into a ball for the head,

* taped together with masking tape.

* I used straws for the arms and legs,

* I punched a hole into the body for the legs and arms with my Crop-a-Dile

* Instead of using newspaper for paper mache, I used vintage music paper, vintage sewing patterns, and vintage book pages

* I made a 1-part flour to 1-part water mixture for the paper mache glue, and let each layer dry overnight

* The eyes and mouth were made on Claudine Hellmuth’s Sticky Back Canvas, cut out and applied

* The background behind her is also paper mache, made on a cardboard mailer. The newspaper article is about me, written several years ago, an interview I gave on hybrid scrapbooking when I was Creative Editor of Scrapbook Dimensions Magazine

* For her hair, I took 10 thin strips of fabric, tied a smaller strip of fabric around them at the top, then adhered one end at the crown of her head. I repeated this about 15 times. Then I tied various floral charms and beads to her hair.

Supplies: toilet paper roll, newspaper, masking tape, straws, vintage music paper (PERSONALITY), vintage sewing pattern(PERSONALITY), vintage book pages (FOUND at antique store), Claudine Hellmuth Sticky Back Canvas Paper, Hambly Transparency, pop dots, various fabric strips for hair, Prima flowers, fake eyelashes (FOUND in my cabinet), wire mesh (FOUND), ArtGirlz cupcake/imagine/feet charms (PERSONALITY); Art Matters Pin I saved from Toronto Museum (FOUND & PERSONALITY); chandelier crystal from flea market (FOUND); feather; brads; twist-ties (FOUND); Hard Rock Cafe stir stick (broke stick off) (PERSONALITY), binder clip (FOUND), chair, misc charms and beads, newspaper article (PERSONALITY)

Tools used: Martha Stewart Butterfly Punch; GlimmerMist by Tattered Angels Mist and Screens; Punchella; Acrylic Paints; Stickles glitter glue; Copic marker; oil pastels; water, flour, gloves Please see the forum for further tutorials on my paper mache art doll!
