The Wisconsin & Southern Railroad (WSOR) is a class II regional railroad operating in southern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois. Until it recently sold them to Iowa Pacific, it operated three ex-CNW bilevel gallery cars for excursions, including one cab car and two trailer cars. All three were built by the St. Louis Car Company. This Lego version is 55 studs long and features a single-level interior (it's too short for two levels). Suggestions are welcome.

Saturday 05 May 2012: Tevfik's House - Köprülu Canyon - Eurymedon Roman Bridge (Oluk Köprü) / Köprüçay River - Aspendos - Antalya

Although we were due to have a relatively late and leisurely breakfast, I was awake not long after 6am - and a peer through the curtains revealed cloud right down to the river. Decidedly errie. But by 8.30 breakfast time, the sun was out and the skies were blue - and indeed we had great weather all day.

Leaving Tefvik's House, we walked along a narrow path through the woods that come down to the river in this stretch of the Köprülu Canyon - indeed, with the river running high, some of the trees were under water. Still, all the water made for exciting excusions out onto the rocks in a couple of places during the morning, including the famous viewpoint over the Canyon just above the Oluk Roman Bridge, which turned out to be disappointingly modern in its reinforcement, and just down stream hordes of holiday makers were setting off on their white knuckle river rafting adventures.

A lovely lunch at a shady fish restaurant on the banks of the river Köprüçay, before travelling on to the famous ruins at Aspendos. They may be famous, but they weren't my favourite by a long way. Too many people, too much hassle, not enough wow factor. A well preserved theatre, but everything else is decidedly disappointing, although the aqueduct is impressive and the souvenir sellers surprisingly relaxed.

Back in Antalya, a quick bag drop in our (new) rooms at the Mediterra Art Hotel, then an hour seeing the sights with Mike: Hadrian's Gate, the narrow streets and old houses of Kaleiçi, the Hıdırlık Tower keeping watch over the coast and the harbour, the famous fluted minaret of Alaaddin Camii and the broken minaret of Kesik Minare.

After a long awaited wash and brush up / shave for some of the chaps / Gin and Tonic, we headed off into the night for our final group dinner in the courtyard of the Parlak restaurant, followed by a few more beers / rakis close to the hotel watching Saturday night life, Antalya-style.

A day of abrupt changes; this lovely trip had come to an end far too fast.

Monday 22 July 2013 - Day 03 - Acclimatisation day 1, Huaraz (3,052m)

After a fine breakfast at the Hotel Colomba, we set out on foot to take in the sights of central Huaraz, and then started a slow climb up towards the swimming pool and adjacent cemetery and thence out into the fields and pastures above the town to Mirador Rataquenua.

From the Mirador's giant bright yellow and blue cross we had crystal clear views out over the town and the Rio Santa valley, to the snow clad peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, including Huascarán (Peru's highest peak at 6,768 m / 22,205 ft), Huandoy / Wantuy, Alpamayo / Allpamayu / Shuyturahu and more.

After lunch at Café Andino (VG for herbal teas, proper coffees, carafes of home made lemonade, tasty paninis and irresistible chips), we had the afternoon to potter around town, and to relax in the gardens back at the hotel. Many more polystyrene cups of coca tea were consumed to assist our ongoing acclimatisation.

For dinner, Val led us to the Bistro de Los Andes, with its lovely first floor views out over the main square, the Cathedral and the souvenir market (very good value - I should have spent some Soles there!). My thai green (veggie) curry was tasty, but somehow not as good as last night's veg fried rice....

youtu.be/tzawZeI53nM Trailer

Starring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Henry Daniell, Edith Atwater, Russell Wade and Sharyn Moffett. Directed by Robert Wise.

This Robert Louis Stevenson tale was inspired by the true story of the gruesome graverobbers Burke and Hare. Legendary horror producer Val Lewton brought in director Robert Wise ("The Day the Earth Stood Still") to adapt Stevenson's story for the screen. He then cast the two greatest horror stars of the cinema, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, to add a chilling atmosphere to the production.

Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi join forces once again for this RKO horror classic, loosely based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson. Val Lewton, producer of such cult classics as Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie, helped adapt the screenplay with Robert Wise directing. Dr. Wolfe MacFarlane (Henry Daniell) is a surgeon experimenting on corpses, dug up by his henchman John Gray (Karloff). In order to keep getting paid, and to provide the freshest corpses, Gray turns to murder, with dire consequences for all.

Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi were given top billing in the Val Lewton-produced The Body Snatcher, but the film's protagonist is played by Henry Daniell. A brilliant 18th century London surgeon, Daniell can only make his humanitarian medical advances by experimenting on cadavers, which is strictly illegal. Karloff plays a Uriah Heep-type cabman who is secretly a grave robber, providing corpses for Daniell's research. The low-born Karloff enjoys blackmailing the aristocratic Daniell into silence; the two actors' cat-and-mouse scenes are among the film's highlights. Eventually, Karloff turns to murder to supply fresh bodies to Daniell. The doctor can stand no more of this, and kills Karloff. But though Daniell may be able to escape the law, he cannot escape his conscience, which manifests itself in the voice of the dead Karloff, whose repeated mantra "NEVER get rid of me! NEVER get rid of me!" drives Daniell to his death. Though billed second, Lugosi has an embarrassingly small part, though the scene he shares with Karloff is one of his best-ever screen moments. The Body Snatcher was based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson, which in turn was inspired by the homicidal career of notorious grave-robbers Burke and Hare.

Review:

The Body Snatcher features one of Boris Karloff's best and most sinister performances, though it is the lesser known and lower credited Henry Daniell who spends more time on screen. Bela Lugosi, billed as Karloff's co-star, has a minor supporting role as Karloff's assistant. Despite (or perhaps because of) his brief screen time, Lugosi's performance is among the best of his career. Though he would continue to make films until his death in 1956, Body Snatcher is the last of Lugosi's "serious" horror films; his subsequent work would mostly devolve into parody. The production values are scant, as was the case with many RKO efforts from the 1940s, but producer Val Lewton (who also wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Carlos Keith) and director Robert Wise create an eerie atmosphere that enhances the story. The film proved too strong for British censors, who kept Body Snatcher from being available in that country in its original form for more than fifty years.

About

New swing sextet, New York oldest Vibe driven sextet, and still performing "salsa that keeps the dancers moving and the Dj's pumping"

Biography

ABOUT THE NEW SWING SEXTET

A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York Worlds Fair in 1965... The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades.

Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer. In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area. However, you can't buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing. The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.

The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region. The Palladium and other clubs were dancing to the music of Machito and his Afro-Cubans, and the Jose Curbelo Orchestra while Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Eddie Palmieri, Joe Cuba, and Cal Tjader, among many others, had already established their unmistakable sounds. In the early sixties, every other city block in New York had a Latin band and a doo-wop group. Blend these many elements together and you get the influences that shaped the New Swing Sextet and their contemporaries, including Johnny Colon; the Lebron Brothers; Willie Colon, Joe Bataan and Pete Rodriguez groups that helped pioneer a new street sound (which would eventually become Latin Boogaloo and Salsa). The New Swing Sextet would join the Alpha Artists of America (under the Management of Jose Curbelo) and ultimately record 4 long albums (and have a separate Best of the New Swing Sextet) all under the Cotique label. The band regularly performed on popular TV shows such as El Club de la Juventud con Polito Vega; The Tito Puente Show with host Sofi; and El Show de Myrta Silva among others. It was a magical time to be a performing Latin artist in New York City. A fraternity of great musicians and legends in the making, routinely performing together at the great dance clubs of the day, including: The Corso; LaMaganette; The Chez Jose; La Mancha; The Colgate Gardens; The Psycho Room; The Tropicoro; The Cheetah and at all the great battle of the band venues such as The Hunts Point Palace; The Manhattan Center; The Riverside Plaza Hotel and The St. Georges Hotel. Over a ten-year period the New Swing performed all summer-long at popular resorts and at the summer home of Latin music: las Villas. The band has also toured extensively and performed at world famous venues such as the legendary Apollo Theatre; the South Street Seaport and Webster Hall in New York City. Recent performances to large audiences in Montreal, San Francisco, & Los Angeles, proved that the band still has plenty of sabrosura to keep the dancers on the floor.

Mooresville, NC - goo.gl/06FkfJ Detroit Speed certainly left a mark at Daytona this past weekend with Kyle Tucker claiming 1st overall in the 3,000 lb. class and punching his ticket to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Nevada at the end of the year.

Kyle wasn't the only one making waves at the notorious "high banks" of Daytona International Speedway. Ryan Mathews claimed 2nd place in the Autocross Challenge and 3rd place in the BFGoodrich Hot Lap Challenge in the 3,000 lb. class driving the DSE 2012 White Monster Camaro.

It was a very hot and sunny weekend in Daytona, perfect for what the Ultimate Street Car Association had planned. The Detroit Speed Road Rally cruised around the Daytona area with a stop at the beach before heading back to the Speedway for the Holley welcome party with delicious food prepared by master Pro-Touring chef, Albert Melchoir.

The following day was the Lingenfelter Design & Engineering Challenge and the BFGoodrich Hot Lap Challenge. Kyle and the DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car finished 2nd in the Design & Engineering Challenge and captured vital points in the overall competition. There was a bit of twist to the BFGoodrich Hot Lap Challenge at this event. Racing Started at 1:00 PM and ran until 5:00 PM followed by a dinner break. What was special about this Hot Lap Challenge was the fact that everyone jumped back in their vehicles and ran the road course from 6:45 until 9:45 under the lights! This was such an amazing experience to run the high banks of Daytona under the lights at crazy speeds and banking. That memory will be one that nobody will likely forget for the rest of their lifetime.

Sunday was the final two segments of the event, the Autocross Challenge and the Speed Stop Challenge. Kyle perfected his runs and came away with 1st place in the Speed Stop in his DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car. These were key points in race for first with Kyle eventually claiming the top spot in the 3,000 lb. class.

In addition to Kyle winning the 3,000 lb. class and qualifying for the year end Optima Ultimate Street car Invitational, Mike Johnson qualified by winning the under 3000 lb. class in his Corvette while Todd Earsley qualified in the AWD class and Dan Howe qualified by winning the Spirit of the Event Award. We would also like to congratulate Brian Finch who won the Detroit Speed "Fastest American Iron Pre 1980" award and Danny Popp who won the Detroit Speed "Fastest Fifth Gen Camaro" award.

Many thanks to the crew at @DriveUSCA for putting on such a fantastic event at a truly amazing venue. To run on the high banks at Daytona is arguably one of ever racer's dreams. For the crew at Detroit Speed to be able to do it and be successful was icing on the cake. We look forward to going back and competing in the event next year.
