PARROQUIA DE SANTA CRUZ y SOLEDAD

Here future Lovers, when in Troops they come,

Venus, to visit thy distinguish'd Dome,

As thro' this consecrated Shade they pass,

Shall offer to the Genius of the Place.

Shift now the closer Scene: and view around,

With various Beauties the wide Landskip crown'd.

Here level Glades extend their length'ning Lines,

There in just Order the deep Quincunce shines.

Here chrystal Lakes reflect contiguous Shades,

There distant Hills uplift their azure Heads.

Round the free Lawn here gadding Heifers stray,

And frisking Lambs in sportive Gambols play.

There murmur to the Wind Groves ever-green,

And inter-mingled Buildings rise between:

The Sun declin'd with milder Glory burns,

And the fair Piece with various Light adorns.

Lo! in the Centre of this beauteous Scene,

Glitters beneath her Dome the Cyprian Queen:

Not like to her, whom ancient Homer prais'd,

To whom a thousand sacred Altars blaz'd:

When simple Beauty was the only Charm,

With which each tender Nymph and Swain grew warm:

But, Yielding to the now-prevailing Taste,

In Gold, for modern Adoration, drest.

For her the Naiads, in their watry Bed,

Amid the level Green a Mirror spread;

Along whose terass'd Banks the shelt'ring Wood,

Defends from ruder Winds th' unruffled Flood.

Americans in Rheinland-Pfalz take stand against drugs, alcohol

By Rick Scavetta, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

SEMBACH, Germany - Hundreds of people at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz took a stand against drug and alcohol abuse Oct. 19 during the Red Ribbon Run at Sembach Kaserne.

The event, centered on a five kilometer fun run and walk, is the Kaiserslautern Military Community’s way to commemorate National Red Ribbon Week. Kai Jendretzke won the race, coming in at 17:11.

“We had more than 850 runners and walkers and we had in excess of 107 volunteers,” said Sandi Magill, who coordinated the event. “I’d say, ‘we rocked it.’”

This year, the event was paired with a Halloween theme – zombies. Many people got into character, sporting ghoulish face paint and torn clothes. The first zombie across the finish line was Pfc. James Conyers, 23, a military police Soldiers assigned to the 230th Military Police Company at Sembach Kaserne.

The event kicked off beside the Sembach Community Activity Center. First, runners and walkers registered and received a t-shirt that said “Never High, Always Fly.” Dozens of families brought their dogs with them. At least one cat also attended.

Following the opening ceremony, participants made their way to the start line. Wojtek Czyz, a German Paralympic athlete whose leg was amputated from a severe soccer injury, held a race torch high. At the starting gun, they were off with Czyz, Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, commander of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and Col. Bryan DeCoster, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, leading the group.

Zombies aside, the garrison hosts the annual event to spread awareness on prevention of drug and alcohol abuse. Red Ribbon Week, which starts Oct. 23, honors the memory of Enrique Camarena, an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent and former Marine who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985.

People sick of the destruction caused by alcohol and drugs began wearing red satin badges and forming coalitions to spread the word. Now, events are designed for people to take a stand against substance abuse. In the KMC, the Army garrison’s family-geared run and walk has become tradition.

Before and after the run, families took part in lots of fun activities, to include a haunted house, mask making, making your own Zombie T-shirt and pumpkin decorating. There was also a flash mob, where volunteers danced to Michael Jackson’s song, “Thriller.”

There was a USO stand offering food as well as food from the Sembach Community Activity Center. There was a haunted house, a pumpkin patch, fire trucks and jumping castles. More than 50 garrison staff and band members also supported the event.

Several community organizations were on hand for the event, to include the garrison’s Army Substance Abuse and Prevention program, Army Community Service and family advocacy. Cadets from the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps posted the colors during the opening ceremony and served as guides. In all, more than 22 community agencies took part, Magill said. In total, roughly 4,075 people took part, Magill said.

Command Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Kraus, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s senior enlisted leader, closed the event by encouraging participants eat suppers as a family.

“Plan at least three dinners together weekly with your kids. Take time to engage them in conversation about school, work, spirituality, fitness and health,” Kraus said. “It’s been proven to make a difference.”

The Spartans start their baseball season with a southern trip, returning to East Lansing about now every spring. State plays Big 10 teams on the weekends and mostly Mid-America Conference squads in mid-week. Lately they've been opening their home season against the Chips.

MSU baseball's become one of my post-retirement pleasures. I watch 'em in East Lansing, and I've followed the team to Kalamazoo and Mount Pleasant most recent years. Maybe this year I'll add Ann Arbor, or Ypsi. We'll see.

The Lares Treks valley is one of the most picturesque villages in the southern part of Cusco. Lares Valley is particularly well know for its very high-quality, brightly coloured weavings and characteristic upturned hats, many of the popular tourist markets being supplied from here. The trek itself is rated moderate, similar to the Inca Trail. There are, however, one pass over 4000m so it is essential that you are well acclimatized to the altitude

[caption id="attachment_1561" align="alignleft" width="151" caption="Cahier Marseillais"] [/caption]

Presqu’un an.

[caption id="attachment_1562" align="alignright" width="176" caption="Cahier Marseillais"] [/caption]

[caption id="attachment_1564" align="alignleft" width="166" caption="Cahier Marseillais "] [/caption]

Well this place is old

It feels just like a beat up truck

I turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn

Well it smells of cheap wine & cigarettes

This place is always such a mess

Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn

I'm so alone, and I feel just like somebody else

Man, I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same

But somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams

I think her death it must be killin' me

Statement of Significance

What is significant?

The Tower Hill State Game Reserve is an area of approximately 6.2 sq km, 3 km inland from the coast between Warrnambool and Port Fairy managed by Parks Victoria since 1997. The Reserve consists of a volcanic crater of nested maar type bounded by the encircling crater rim that forms a highly visible landmark in the surrounding plain. The crater, filled by a lake and series of islands, themselves volcanic cones, was formed at least 30,000 years ago when a hot rising basaltic magma came into contact with the subterranean water table. The violent explosion that followed created the funnel-shaped crater (later filled by a lake) and the islands. Artefacts found in the volcanic ash layers show that Aboriginal people were living in the area at the time of the eruption. The Warrnambool area was a rich source of foods for the Koroitgundidj people, whose descendants retain special links with this country.

The first confirmed European sighting of Tower Hill crater was by French explorers sailing with Captain Baudin aboard the Geographe in 1802 who named the crater 'Peak of Reconnaissance'. Throughout the 19th century sailors used Tower Hill as a landmark for entering the harbours of Port Fairy (Belfast) and Warrnambool. The name Tower Hill came into common usage in the 1840s. The crater formation, noted by early European settlers for the beauty of its vegetation was memorialised in the landscape painting of Eugene von Guerard in 1855.

By the late 1850s substantial amounts of forest had been cleared in and around the crater. In 1866 when the crater and inner rim were temporarily reserved for public recreation, the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria was appointed the Committee of Management (1866-1869). The Society had formed in 1861 with the aim of introducing exotic plants and animals to suitable parts of the colony and accordingly introduced goats, pheasants and rabbits to Tower Hill. In 1873 the area was permanently reserved for public purposes and in 1892 in an attempt to halt the environmental damage to the crater Tower Hill Reserve became the first National Park to be declared in Victoria. It remained under the control of Koroit Council which permitted clearing of native vegetation, grazing and the quarrying of scoria to continue. By the 1930s the landscape was bare and little wildlife remained.

In the mid-20th century lobbying by the local community concerned about environmental degradation at Tower Hill along with general recognition of the declining numbers of game birds in Victoria led to the crater being declared a State Game Reserve in 1961, one of a number established across the State at this time as wildlife refuges. The contained nature of the crater site meant it could be readily adapted to a scientifically designed habitat management program.

In 1962 Robin Boyd was commissioned to design a Natural History Centre on the main island at Tower Hill, completed in 1969. This early example of an interpretive centre was to provide the public with information about the restoration of the Tower Hill environment and the wildlife and habitats of the State's Reserves and to be a centre of study for wildlife management. Boyd, a hero of the conservation movement, designed a simple stone circular structure with sloping roof mirroring the volcanic island hilltops, sitting in harmony with the landscape. The circular glazed pavilion is a timber construction with a cill height stone skirt and wide eaves. At the centre of the open internal space is a central hollow stone column which supports the roof and is crowned by a skylight reminiscent of the core of the volcano that gave rise to the landscape. Laminated timber rafters, arranged radially, span from the hollow stone core to the outer ring of window and project to form deep eaves.

As early as 1958 local community groups established experimental plots of native trees at Tower Hill. Following designation as a State Game Reserve serious efforts began to replicate the original vegetation using von Guerard's (1855) painting as a guide to replanting using botanists to identify the plant species. By 1981 school children,, naturalists and other volunteers had planted 250 000 trees and shrubs at Tower Hill and removed non-native species and weeds and feral animals. Native animal species including koalas, wombats, emus and echidnas have also been successfully reintroduced to Tower Hill through reinstatement of habitat. The replanting program was the first of its kind in Victoria and provided a model for the national Landcare movement, established in Victoria in the 1980s.

How is it significant?

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is of aesthetic, historic, scientific, social and architectural significance to the State of Victoria

Why is it significant?

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is of aesthetic significance, being an inspirational landscape, recognised for the beauty and uniqueness of its geological form and natural vegetation from first European exploration and settlement of the region.

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is a cultural landscape of historical significance in reflecting more than a century of changing attitudes to landscape in its evolving status and the character of its environment.

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is of historical significance as an iconic and inspirational landscape, noted for its geological form and the beauty of its natural vegetation from first European exploration and settlement of the region, memorialised in Eugene von Guerard's 1855 painting of Tower Hill crater and island. It was this iconic beauty that environmentalists sought to reinstate through their replanting of native vegetation, the species having initially been identified initially from the detail of von Guerard's painting.

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is of historical significance as the earliest and an outstanding example of community programs to reinstate native vegetation and re-create native habitat on cleared and degraded land. Skills developed in the course of this work, and subsequently applied in other parts of the country include an understanding of the importance of using species indigenous to the local area, requirements for re-introduction of native fauna, and awareness of the need for re-establishment of understorey species.

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is of social significance for the ongoing role of the local community and community groups in the reinstatement of natural habitats in the Reserve.

Tower Hill State Game Reserve is of scientific (geological) significance as an example of a nested maar, a specific type of volcanic crater that formed at least 30 000 years ago when hot rising basaltic magma came into contact with the subterranean water table resulting in a series of phreatic explosions that created the funnel-shaped crater (later filled by a lake) coupled with late stage scoria cone development of the islands seen today.

Night photography of steel towers at the historic Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, Vallejo, California.

It had been a while since I last shot at the Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, one of my favorite places to do night photography. But in early March the opportunity came up to join friends from the Nocturnes, the San Francisco Bay Area night photography group currently celebrating its 20th year. We met in the afternoon for the traditional social stuff - tour of the island, sharing photographs, and pizza - and then headed out after the sun set. (Night photographers are probably the only people who look out the window and mutter, "Ah, its still golden hour. Let's not go out yet..." ;-)

These giant steel towers are among the most iconic structures at the historic ship yard. As I understand it, they were originally part of a system used to move very heavy materials (such as ship engines) from shops to the water's edge. Virtually everyone who photographs here indulges in photographing these towers and even after you have photographed the place as many times as I have they are still a source of interest. Recent work on the island has opened up a section of the water front that was previously off-limits, so it was possible to walk right beside these shell towers as they stretched out toward the water. Working from almost directly beneath them, I lined up a couple of the towers in night darkness, in which the towers were lit by nearby security lights.

It's always such an important part of the wedding when the bride is walked down the aisle by her Father.  For me, it's when the wedding day becomes so real.  Emotions start pouring out, the guests see the bride for the first time, and unless they did a First Look, it's the first time the groom sees the bride.  What am I trying to say?  You CAN'T miss these shots.

This image is of Mandy being walked down the aisle by her Dad at her wedding with Opie at Jekyll Island, Georgia. As a destination wedding photographer I'd always wanted to shoot a wedding in Jekyll Island, and when this opportunity came up, I was so excited to be able to do it.  I love seeing the flow of her dress as it's getting kicked up from her walking motion.  And I really love how they're looking at each other...

The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its tenants, the Palace lies on the Middlesex bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London.

At the north end of the Palace rises the most famous of the towers, the Elizabeth Tower, commonly known as Big Ben. At 96 metres (316 ft), it is only slightly shorter than the Victoria Tower but much slimmer. It houses the Great Clock of Westminster, built by Edward John Dent on designs by amateur horologist Edmund Beckett Denison.

Striking the hour to within a second of the time, the Great Clock achieved standards of accuracy considered impossible by 19th-century clockmakers, and it has remained consistently reliable since it entered service in 1859. The time is shown on four dials 7 metres (23 ft) in diameter, which are made of milk glass and are lit from behind at night; the hour hand is 2.7 metres (8 ft 10 in) long and the minute hand 4.3 metres (14 ft). Now that Johänni has discovered her love for photography (and for my Nikon D7000), I don't get to use it as often as I used to. So I got us a new lens for her Olypmus "PEN" E-P1 to make up for my loss. The Panasonic Lumix G 20mm F1.7 Asph. is just great. Where the kit lens often left me belittling the little camera and wanting to have a "real" one, with this new baby I felt just at home with it.

TABLE LAMP XX BUTTERFLY

Nature and math is an ocen of inspiration. The organic pattern contains three structures (plus butterflies main lines) and each of them is based upon Voronoi diagram – one of those mathematical oddities (like fractals) that turns up frequently in the world of nature.

The head of the lamp is made of Senegalese gourd. Its diameters are 27 and 23cm.

Thickness of the gourd is about 1cm so the structure is quite deep and it is carved on three different depth levels.

Height of the whole lamp is 48cm.

The diameter of the base is 28cm and it is finished with dark brown jeweler waxed string.

The end of the base is carved from wood.

On the top of the lamp is closing part locked with little magnets.
