Soldiers, family members visit shrines, goat farm

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Soldiers and family members from here got an up close and personal look at Korean culture when they visited shrines and a goat farm, in Pyeongtaek, June 9.
Tour participant Laura Weaver said, “My husband and I enjoyed the tour. We didn’t realize how big of a city Pyeongtaek was before riding around in the bus. We would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in learning more about Pyeongtaek because there is a lot more out there than AK Plaza. We saw and did many things that we hadn’t before.”
The tour featured stops at Chong Do Jeon shrine, Jinwi local school and the Sambong Chung Dojeon Memorial.
“The tour was really great,” said Chrys Cunningham. “We are trying to see as much of Korea as we can, and these tours give our family an easy way to spend time together and enjoy the country. The temples and shrines were very interesting.”
Participants also had the chance to make natural soap and visit a goat farm.
“We learned that there are plenty of things to do around Pyeongtaek,” said Todd Brothers. “The most impressive thing we saw was probably the Nong Ak show. We really enjoyed some of the music and the acrobatics. There was one time when there were four people being held by one person at the bottom. That was impressive.”
“We also really enjoyed the dance show,” Cunningham added. “The kids loved getting involved in the dance at the end.”

An afternoon outing on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway from Cheltenham Race Course to Broadway. We got the 14:05 and had our own carriage reserved.
Our train had to wait outside of Gotherington Station, to wait for a passing train, as part of the line was only single track, and here it was a passing section.
Gotherington railway station is a railway station serving the village of Gotherington in Gloucestershire, England. The station is located just to the north of the village.
It is located on the former Cheltenham to Stratford-upon-Avon line, which was opened by the Great Western Railway in 1906. The station opened as Gotherington on 1 June 1906; it was renamed Gotherington Halt on 1 December 1940, and was closed on 13 June 1955. It was the first station to close on this route (most of the other stations closed in 1960). The line itself remained open until 1976. The track was later lifted by 1979.
The line was relaid by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, during the mid-1990s reaching Gotherington in 1997. Trains recommenced the same year, and were extended to Cheltenham Racecourse in April 2003.
The station buildings are privately owned, so trains use the opposite platform. During major events the private garden is opened to passengers and the station house becomes a tea room. A short length of track in the garden allows rides on a Wickham or pump trolley.
Just south of Gotherington station is a passing loop controlled by a new signal box. When the box is switched in, it breaks the very long section between Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse, then short section token working is in use from Cheltenham Racecourse Station to Gotherington, and Gotherington to Winchcombe. There is also a provision for Down trains to terminate at the Gotherington, use the loop to run round the train and return to Winchcombe.
Thought another steam locomotive would pass but was a diesel.

The Fortress of Louisbourg (French: Forteresse de Louisbourg) is a National Historic Site of Canada and the location of a one-quarter partial reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortress at Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Its two sieges, especially that of 1758, were turning points in the Anglo-French struggle for what today is Canada.
The original settlement was made in 1713, and initially called Havre à l'Anglois. Subsequently, the fishing port grew to become a major commercial port and a strongly defended fortress. The fortifications eventually surrounded the town. The walls were constructed mainly between 1720 and 1740. By the mid-1740s Louisbourg was one of the most extensive (and expensive) European fortifications constructed in North America. It was supported by two smaller garrisons on Île Royale located at present-day St. Peter's and Englishtown. The Fortress of Louisbourg suffered key weaknesses, since it was erected on low-lying ground commanded by nearby hills and its design was directed mainly toward sea-based assaults, leaving the land-facing defences relatively weak. A third weakness was that it was a long way from France or Quebec, from which reinforcements might be sent. It was captured by British colonists in 1745, and was a major bargaining chip in the negotiations leading to the 1748 treaty ending the War of the Austrian Succession. It was returned to the French in exchange for border towns in what is today Belgium. It was captured again in 1758 by British forces in the Seven Years' War, after which its fortifications were systematically destroyed by British engineers. The British continued to have a garrison at Louisbourg until 1768.
The fortress and town were partially reconstructed in the 1960s and 1970s, using some of the original stonework, which provided jobs for unemployed coal miners. The head stonemason for this project was Ron Bovaird. The site is operated by Parks Canada as a living history museum.
French settlement on Île Royale (now Cape Breton Island) can be traced to the early 17th century following settlements in Acadia that were concentrated on Baie Française (now the Bay of Fundy) such as at Port-Royal and other locations in present-day peninsular Nova Scotia
In 1713, France set about constructing Port Dauphin and a limited naval support base at the former site of Fort Ste-Anne; however, the winter icing conditions of the harbour led the French to choose another harbour on the southeastern part of Île Royale. The harbour, being ice-free and well protected, soon became a winter port for French naval forces on the Atlantic seaboard and they named it Havre Louisbourg after King Louis XIV.
The Fortress of Louisbourg was the capital for the colony of Île-Royale, and was located on the Atlantic coast of Cape Breton Island near its southeastern point. The location for the fortress was chosen because it was easy to defend against British ships attempting to either block or attack the St. Lawrence River, at the time the only way to get goods to Canada and its cities of Quebec and Montreal. South of the fort, a reef provided a natural barrier, while a large island provided a good location for a battery. These defences forced British ships to enter the harbour via a 500-foot (150 m) channel. The fort was built to protect and provide a base for France's lucrative North American fishery and to protect Quebec City from British invasions. For this reason it has been given the nicknames ‘Gibraltar of the North’ or the ‘Dunkirk of America.’ The fort was also built to protect France’s hold on one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, the Grand Banks. The Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) are a set of steps in Rome, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The Scalinata is the widest staircase in Europe.

Thursday 03 July 2014 - Day 04 - Huaraz (3,052m) - The Lazy Dog Inn (3,650m)
Acclimatisation day 2 saw us leave the Hostal Colomba for a night, driving higher up into the foothills of the Cordillera Blanca to stay at the lovely Lazy Dog Inn, 600m higher up than Huaraz - lugging our kit bags uphill to the main lodge you could feel it. A stunning setting - superb views over Huaraz and to the Cordillera Negra in one direction, and up into the Blanca in the other.
After teas and coffees with our hosts Diana and Wayne we headed off towards the Quebrada Llaca, walking up as far as the edge of the Parque Nacional Huascarán. Familiar from last year, we got the same smashing walking, lovely flowers and good views.
We lunched at Café Yurac Yacu, a community cafe staffed by local Quechua ladies, just down the hill from the LDI. Fabulous food with a great view.... I opted for Quinoa salad (with sultanas, mango, satsuma, almonds, diced carrot and broccoli bits, all in a citrus dressing) followed by fruit crumble with yoghurt / chocolate brownie and ice cream (going halvies with Val), My only regret is that I didn't buy one of the knitted hats!
A leisurely afternoon, then pre dinner beers and chats by the open log fire with the other guests at the LDI before an excellent three course meal culminating in banana pancakes - delicious. But absentmindedly drinking the spring water was to result in The Return of Giardia during the night....

El Partido Sociedad Patriótica en Los Ríos realizó el lanzamiento de campaña en Ventanas con una multitudinaria caminata liderada por el candidato a Presidente de la República, Ing. Lucio Gutiérrez y el Asambleísta Galo Lara, quien va a la reelección, y el Alcalde Carlos Carriel, quien ratificó todo su apoyo y respaldo a los coidearios de la Lista 3.
Luego de recorrer la principal Avenida de Ventanas miles de riosenses con carteles en mano que decían "Lucio Presidente" o "Quinsaloma respalda a Galo Lara" se concentraron para oír a sus candidatos.
Durante su discurso Lara aseguró que este Gobierno pese a su esfuerzo por callarlo no lo conseguirá, y que mas bien seguirá siendo la voz de los que no tienen voz, quienes están cansados de ver tantos actos de corrupción que involucran a funcionarios del Régimen.
"Yo no voy a luchar por mis derechos sino por los derechos de todos ustedes, porque no pase un solo impuesto mas en la Asamblea que afecte al sector agrícola y productivo", detalló.
En la caminata también participaron los candidatos a Asambleísta Nacional, Vicente Taiano; y a Asambleístas por Los Ríos, Mercedes Villacrés, Franklin Purcachi, Lorena Macías, Joel Mendoza y Maricella Muñoz.
Este evento culminó con la presentación de grandes artistas de la Provincia de Los Ríos y del Ecuador, como fueron Franklin Band, y Gerardo Morán, quienes pusieron a bailar a los miles de simpatizantes del PSP que quieren un cambio de Gobierno y en la Asamblea.
The Hotel Portmeirion opened in 1926 as the focal point of Clough Williams-Ellis' proposed idea village. Artists, writers and Albanian royalty have stayed here not to mention various politicians, tycoons and other swindlers, however everyone is special at Portmeirion and all are welcome.
The main building of the hotel was built around 1850 (extended by Clough Williams-Ellis in 1926 & 1930; listed Grade II 1971) was the original mansion of Aber Iâ.and first described by Richard Richards in 1861 as "one of the most picturesque of all the summer residences to be found on the sea-coast of Wales."
When Clough discovered it in 1925 he was faced with dereliction and an overgrown wilderness. "I obviously had to use the old house on the sea's edge for something and, if I wanted a village, it would have to have an economic basis and the obvious thing seemed to be tourism. It was at Easter 1926, after less than a year's preparation, that the original old house, little altered, opened somewhat tentatively as an unlicensed hotel."
Clough's first extension of the old house was drawn in October 1926. This tower-like wing added to the west of the old house rises close to the cliff face. The wing was originally limewashed with yellow, and its subtlety depends on the use of external window shutters painted in the green which became synonymous with the village. Clough added a new dining room in 1930. Instead of reproducing the Victorian style of the original structure, here Clough exploited a curved, highly glazed plan of clearly Modern concept. It opened at Easter 1931, as noted in an early edition of the guide book: "The big brand-new curvilinear restaurant on the sea-edge, opened a little doubtfully for Easter, was, by August, hopelessly inadequate for its dual purpose of serving both residents and day-visitors."
As Richard Haslam points out, with this addition Clough achieved two of his ideals: "a placeTea on the lawn 1929 which, because of its sheltered outlook over the sea and its airy position, calls for lightness of construction; and a space defined only by curves in its plan. It is made almost entirely of wood; the outer walls are mostly window, the simple joinery of its flat roof is shown on the drawing, and the columns are cut from sections of mast from a dismantled Porthmadog schooner."
Clough later added a new entrance and offices in a similar style around 1935. These additions to the front of the hotel continued in use until their destruction in the fire of 1981. Conceived as superimposed glazed walls on curved plans under flat roofs, they were fluent and modern spaces, which enabled the functions of a hotel to coexist with a Victorian house hemmed in by a cliff.
On the night of Friday 5 June 1981 the hotel was gutted by fire, the flames fanned by a stiff Easterly wind. Reconstruction commenced almost immediately and eventually all its main rooms were substantially restored to their former state as evidenced by Clough's description of the original interior: "As you enter the hall past a massive carved Italian renaissance fireplace, you see beyond it the wide and easy flight of a typical eighteenth century stair with an elegant balustrade...No one knows whence it came, but we do know where the library at its foot came from, and it was the Great Exhibition of 1851 - all complete with its intricately carved doors and mantelpiece - to be built straight into the house that was then, presumably, just ready to receive it. The Mirror Room, next it, reflects as you enter the view outside the wrong way round; the mantelshelf is supported by the functional haloes of a pair of carved saints and the inlaid parquet is that surviving the room's use as a curs' kennel - strangely without a mark. The big room at the end of the hall was originally the billiards room - pleasant enough with a bay window towards the sea and a wide alcove opposite... It was the dining room when the house first became an hotel and so continued until I built out a new curvilinear one beyond it." The hotel reopened on 29th April 1988 and in 1990 was awarded the Good Hotel Guide's César Award for "Brilliant restoration of a great hotel to former glory".
The Hotel enjoyed a celebrated clientele such as H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell, Noël Coward and Sir Kenneth Clark.

The transmitter site of KSPN/710 AM, which was known in its glory years (1930 to 1997) as KMPC. It has in recent years been the West Coast flagship station for ESPN, with all-sports programming, including Los Angeles Lakers play-by-play.
It has long been 50,000 watts by day and 10,000 watts by night, and directional at night, using all three towers, to the south-southwest, across Los Angeles.
The facility sits on a large spread of land in the center of the San Fernando Valley (specifically, Valley Glen): land that is in the middle of suburbs and surely more valuable than the station itself at this point, as listening to the AM band is tanking.
This is surely why the owner, Disney, received a construction permit to move to the four-tower facility of KRDC/1110 in Irwindale, east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. There it will be 35,000 watts by day and 2,500 watts by night: a smaller signal (especially at night) from a lesser location.
After that happens, this land will be sold, and the towers will come down. My bet, as I write this (the same day I shot it in April 2021), is that Disney will move KSPN's programming to the much bigger signal on 1110 AM (50,000 watts by day and 20,000 watts by night), and put something else on the new smaller signal on 710 AM.
So I shot these because I wanted to make sure the facility was honored photographically before it was gone.

some war museums in the city center including a walk around the reunification Palace.
Sidetrip from the city is a daytrip to the Cao Dai Temple and the
Cu Chi Tunnel complex
Next part of the tour is heading south to the Mekong Delta and Can-Tho, including a visit to the floating market.
From the Mekong delta the tour is heading north again, visiting coastal places Phan-Thiet, Nha-Trang and qiu-Nhon.
Hoi-an and Hue are both Unesco World Heritage sites and well worth to visit.
Passing the DMZ-zone, the scenery changes quickly.
The Phong-Nha and Tan-Coc caves are amazing.
Almost at the end of the tour, we bumped into the crazy Hanoi traffic in the old city center.
The citytour included a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum,
the Army museum and best of all ice coffee at 'Highlands Coffee'
Last part included Unesco World Heritage at Halong Bay
Stop-over in Hong-Kong on the way Home !

Bourdeilles (Bordelha en occitan1) est une commune française située dans le département de la Dordogne, en région Aquitaine.
Située sur la Dronne, à 20 km au nord-ouest de Périgueux et à 7 km au sud-ouest de Brantôme, Bourdeilles était la première des quatre baronnies du Périgord.

Dans toute sa traversée de la commune, du nord-est au sud-ouest, la vallée de la Dronne2 est classée comme ZNIEFF, alliant l'humidité à une variété de sites qui alternent, au fil des méandres successifs, des endroits ombragés puis lumineux ainsi que des zones escarpées puis planes.

Toponymie[modifier]
Sur la carte de Cassini représentant la France entre 1756 et 1789, on trouve encore la graphie Bourdeille. Ce n'est qu'à partir de 1801 que le nom actuel devient officiel.
Histoire[modifier]
Au xe siècle, mise en place et fondation des quatre baronnies du Périgord : Bourdeilles, Biron, Beynac et Mareuil. Mais ce n'est qu'au xiie siècle qu'est attestée l'existence du village alors appelé Burgus ou villa. Du xie au xiie siècle, on constate une expansion démographique. Vers 1259, les guerres fratricides des Bourdeille contribueront à la démolition du premier château. En août 1263, le vicomte de Limoges Guy VI le Preux meurt à Brantôme après son échec au siège du château de Bourdeilles3.
L'église et les deux châteaux
À partir de 1273, année au cours de laquelle Édouard Ier d'Angleterre investit le château de Bourdeilles4, l'abbé de Brantôme revendique la suzeraineté sur la seigneurie de Bourdeilles. En 1280, le château devient la possession de l'abbé Bernard de Maulmont. Il favorise alors son frère Géraud en lui donnant en fief la châtellenie de Bourdeilles en 1283. Imposé comme coseigneur, Géraud de Maulmont fait construire, à partir de 1283, le château fort dit "château neuf"5. Néanmoins, le vieux lignage des barons de Bourdeilles entre à nouveau en possession de la baronnie et la conserve jusqu'en 1672. À la fin du xviie siècle et jusqu'à la fin du xviiie siècle, la baronnie de Bourdeilles appartient à plusieurs familles : Chapelle de Jumilhac, Bertin, et ce n'est qu'en 1842 que la Maison de Bourdeille, descendante des anciens barons du même nom rachète le château de Bourdeilles et le conserve jusqu'à la mort du dernier d'entre eux, en 1947.
Extrait d'un témoignage de mai 1826 :
"On voit à Bourdeille deux chateaux bien conservés ; une forteresse du 14e siecle et une villa italienne des derniers temps de la renaissance. La forteresse, de forme très originale, se compose principalement d'un grand corps de logis long de 33 mètres et large de 9 m à l'intérieur. Deux salles se partageaient chaque étage. Il n'y avait donc en tout que 4 pièces, dont les quatre immenses cheminées, les fenêtres et les bancs de pierre existent encore. Les murs de refend et les planchers ont disparu. Une toiture passablement entretenue protège l'édifice contre les intempéries, mais elle n'est pas d'origine. Au sud et à l'ouest, du côté de la rivière et du bourg ce corps de logis affleure le bord d'un rocher qui se creuse à sa base de la manière la plus pittoresque. À l'ouest, seul point où il fut possible d'aborder de plain-pied l'emplacement du château, une grosse tour à 8 pans fortifiait l'angle le plus exposé et protégeait la porte d'entrée. C'est un véritable donjon bien conservé...
