Snowshoes saved me from sinking to my waist while shooting the Weber River in this photo. It didn't save me from almost falling into the water a few minutes later. With all the snow I couldn't see where the bridge ended!

Sunday January 8th - Nijmegen - In this very early Spring the floodplains of the rivers Waal en Rhine are flooded. The Rhine at Lobith (the Netherlands) stands now at 12.72 meters. It's expected to increase to 14.50 meters on Tuesday January 10th. A month ago, in early December, the Rhine and Waal had a record low with a state under 7 meters!
One of the floodplains that has been flooded is an area called the "Gelderse Poort". This was and is necessary in the context of safety and river relief. As water is a major driving force behind the creation of the river Waal's landscape and it's embankment, the Gelderse Poort has space for a water mass of roughly 150.000 m3. Currently this capacity is almost reached. With still more water coming in (rain and from the Rhine) its expect to overflow in the next two days.
The Gelderse Poort is a young cross-border nature reserve in the Netherlands and Germany, situated south of city of Nijmegen (Nimwegen), on the banks of the river Waal. The reserve is called after the spot where the Rhine crosses a lateral moraine, which has formed during the last glacial period (aka ice age... No(!), the real one and not from Fox Animation of Hollywood) some 10.000 years ago during last 'years' of the Pleistocene. This is actually the beginning of the Rhine delta in The Netherland. The entire area covers 20,000 ha of which about half is located in Germany.

This is a 18 shot pano (see my earlier posting: as part of my experiment with distortion). Merge by PS and some manual corrections. I use Photomatix for the HDR-conversion.

Formerly, the high school, now the Navasota ISD administration building.
Navasota, Texas is located near a bend in the Navasota River in southeastern Grimes County. It was originally named Hollandale for Francis Holland, who bought land in the area in 1822. The site was a natural crossroads, located near the spot where the La Bahia Road crossed the Navasota River and four stage lines had established stops in the area by the mid 1850’s. A post office was established in 1854 and the name was changed to Navasota. With the coming of the railroad in 1859, the town grew more important as a shipping and marketing center. Cotton and munitions were stored there during the Civil War. After the war, the town suffered a series of setbacks including a fire (started when Confederate army veterans torched a warehouse storing cotton and gunpowder after the war), a cholera epidemic, and confrontations between federal soldiers and the Ku Klux Klan.
Later in the 19th century, one of the first cottonseed oil mills in the state was constructed, along with a number of other establishments including flour mills, cotton gins, a newspaper, a telephone company, and even an opera house.
For more information, including the town’s development in the 20th century, see www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hfn01.

Sorry for all the grouping errors, to make it look nice it needed a lot of shapes. They work though.
Somewhat easy to recolor.

We went to our alma mater's football game Saturday. As I was returning to my seat after getting a drink, the team scored. I had my camera ready to catch the crowd, and snapped the picture without realizing that I had caught 2 men celebrating with a high five!

The High Bridge (officially, the Aqueduct Bridge) is a steel arch bridge, with a height of almost 140 feet (40 m) over the Harlem River, connecting the New York City boroughs of The Bronx and Manhattan. The eastern end is located in The Bronx near the western end of West 170th Street, and the western end is located in Highbridge Park in Manhattan, roughly parallel to the end of West 173rd Street.
Although it has been closed to all traffic since the 1970s, it remains the oldest surviving bridge in New York City.
The bridge is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

According to the historic marker:
This land, which was actually in Mississippi until 1838, originally belonged to the Chickasaws. This area has served as a central hub for education in Collierville since 1873, when Bellevue Female College constructed a two story wooden building here. In 1896, the College burned and was replaced with a brick structure. Bellevue College suspended operations in 1904. Collierville High School, founded in 1905, utilized the college's buildings, and undertook expansions in 1911 and 1924. A new high school facility was built here by the WPA in 1935. The structure remains an ideal example of the "WPA Moderne" architectural style.
Grades 1-12 were all taught at this facility until 1960, when the elementary grades moved to Peterson Lake Road. In 1996, when Collierville High relocated to Frank and Byhalia Roads, this facility became Collierville Middle School, which is remained until 2012, when Collierville Middle School moved to Quinn Road. Ownership of this property was transferred from Shelby County Schools to the town of Collierville in 2012.

I was experimenting with the studio lights again yesterday. I wanted to create a nice, high key self portrait with some interesting, subtle side light. I was pretty pleased with this one.
