Circa 1973 in the student parking lot at Los Alamitos High School. When Vegas were new, they were not uncommon among high school age drivers. My friend's red one is in the background.
The Chevy Vegas were quite popular as a first new car for many young drivers. At that time it had the same appeal as say a Scion tC would have today - attractive, affordable, maintainable, easy to maneuver and easily personalized. What seemed to have doomed the Vega was its aluminum engine block utilizing sleeveless technology in the piston bores and other shortcomings.

Now part of a popular rail trail, High Bridge crosses the half-mile wide Appomattox River valley about halfway between Rice Depot and Farmville, Virginia. The brick supports for the Civil War era bridge remain. A more recent steel bridge parallels the old supports, and now serves hikers in High Bridge Trail State Park. The old bridge towered 117 feet above the river valley. The new one is higher, offering great views over the countryside. On Jan. 1, 2015, about 100 hikers crossed the bridge for a "First Day" event. Ceremonies at the bridge included official opening of a side trail to one of the forts that guarded the bridge during the Civil War, and a talk on the role of "Black Confederates" -- slaves, conscripted free men, and free men who contracted for some of the work -- who built the fort.
One of the advantages of working from home: witnessing scenes in the street that I normally don't see. Like men cleaning the underground waste containers inside and out before emptying them.

High Street signal box located by the Up Main line alongside High Street level crossing at Lincoln. Thursday 5th April 2007
High Street signal box is a Great Northern Railway Company type 1 design that opened in 1874 replacing an 1860s-built signal box. A replacement 36 lever Saxby & Farmer lever frame was installed in 1883 which was in turn replaced by a 36 lever McKenzie & Holland Cam and Tappet Number 13 frame on 21st August 1912. An extension to the signal box was added at the level crossing end in 1925 when the level crossing gates were converted from gate wheel to electric operation, traffic lights operated as part of the closing of the gates sequence were installed in 1956 and the gates were replaced by lifting barriers on 20th January 1991. The signal box was listed as a grade II listed building on 5th November 2007 and closure came on 19th July 2008, although officially it closed on 1st September 2008 when signalling controlled from Lincoln Signalling Centre was commissioned
The nameboard on the front of the signal box is a late British Rail addition, the nameboard above the signal box door is also a late British Rail replacement of a blue enamel nameplate
