My first trip to Higger Tor, didn't go to plan, forgot my filter holder, had to blend exposures and it was blowing a gale too, was hoping for mist in the valleys, that didn't happen either although it was blowing occasionally over the top of Higger as can be seen.
I rose early (for the first time since I don’t know when) and headed out to Owler Tor for a bit of Easter morning landscape photography. And boy was it a beautiful morning. The air was relatively still, the ground frosty and a little bit of mist had gathered in the valleys below. Then, about 40 minutes later, the sun began to rise over the hills and bathed everywhere in a beautiful golden light.
In the background of this image you can see over to Higger Tor and Stanage Edge in the distance. Out of shot to the left you can see over Hathersage to Mam Tor and down the hill behind me is Mother Cap.
Wherever you looked this place just kept giving and giving and I can’t wait to get back out here again.
Another quick upload of a shot from my visit to the Peak District. I had planned to do a sunset shoot from Higger Tor and set off in good time. As I drove up towards the Tor I could see a large photo workshop group lining the escarpment. When I eventually got up there I could see the shot I had planned was being used by the group. I went to the South East corner which was free of tripods, as that area is usually used for sunrises with the Hill Fort of Carl Wark in the background.
I went to the "Kit Kat" or "Bookend" stones which are ideal for sunrise. With some precarious agility and balancing I managed to frame them and the escarpment, to get a sunset. It was tricky and I used a combination of a NISI Circular Polariser and soft ND Grad to kill a bit of the brightness and this is it! I will post more shots when I get home and start going through them all!
Well standing on Carl Wark actually. Set up looking the other way to Higger Tor I noticed the light mingling with the swirling mist behind me, un-hitched the camera from the tripod and fired off a few shots hand-held. Much more exciting than the tripod shots!
Yes, yet another one! I love the contrast between the warm light of the sun and the cold frost in the shade...
If you look carefully, you'll see one of the other 8 or so photographers that ended up on Higger Tor that morning!
Edit - The new version of this shot is a blend of two versions, exported using different white balances for the light and shade...

The packhorse bridge straddling Burbage Brook in the Burbage Valley near Hathersage. On the left can be seen a couple of walkers heading to the gap between Carl Wark and Higger Tor.
The image was given a selenium-toned effect during processing.

I made a couple of attempts shooting into the rising sun. Higger Tor's prominence is a great place as you can choose any direction to shoot,

A misty view of Carl Wark from Higger Tor one recent morning.
I like this muted colour compoisition which reflects the reality of the landscape that morning, and where the land itself is not being outcompeted by a burning sunrise sky. Sometimes the land should have the glory!
That said, in hindsight with the conditions, I would have preferred to be walking through local woodlands!
