Higger Tor or Higgar Tor is a gritstone tor in the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District National Park in England. It overlooks the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast.
The tor stands to the south west of Sheffield, east of the border with Derbyshire, which runs along the nearby road to Ringinglow.
A scene from the 1987 film The Princess Bride was filmed nearby at Carl Wark with Higger Tor visible in the background.
As you walk from Higger to Over Owler Tor, en route towards Winyards Nick, continue left of the Nick and you'll reach a crossroads of footpaths, Looking out on one of those paths gives a perfect view across the Hathersage Valley.

Between Higger Tor and Winyards Nick (en route to Over Owler Tor, there is a sheepfold, and in one corner there's a curious little metal picket fence - almost like a cemetery marking out a grave of someone important.
How feeble that fence is!
After a few decades, rain has rusted this hardened, man-made metal and yet in contrast, in the background, Higger's rocks stand silently proud of their millennial heritage.

Not sure if I should admit to this, let alone apologise for it, but this is a composite of 2 shots 10mins apart. A bank of cloud on the horizon meant that the setting sun first lit the clouds, and then shortly after, lit the heather, but not the two at once. I'm not a huge fan of creating a scence from separate elements, but as it was the same composition on the same shoot, I'm going to call this Time Blending, in the same way that you might Focus Stack or Blend exposures. If you've read this far, what's your opinon of the approach? Dishonest? Not an issue? It's all art so who cares?
This morning in fact. Looking up to Higger Tor from Carl Wark (Iron Age hillfort) in the Peak District national park, England.
Although the light didn't quite happen at sunrise there was enough, eventually, to provide some contrast and to illuminate the masses of bracken on the slopes.
Very nice to be out and using my 21mm lens again for the first time in ages. I worked out a few more compositions for next time too!

Sunrise up on Higger Tor, looked like it was going to be clouded over until a few clear spots in the cloud appeared, a few minutes later the sun burst through for a few minutes of nice light.
Bright and sunny Higger Tor taken from down low in the wind swept grasses.

Yesterday morning up on the snow-covered tops looking over to Carl Wark, Higger Tor, Stanage Edge and perhaps a tiny bit of Bamford Edge (not sure). -5C on the way, tricky driving (4x4 or I wouldn't have ventured out) and not easy underfoot either.
Looking west towards the Hope Valley from Higger Tor. In the far distance you can just make out the Hope Cement Works with a bluing tint from the chimney.
One from a peaceful Summer's morning wandering about the woodland at Surprise View, near Hathersage.
Looking across the Burbage Valley towards Big Moor from the gritstone edge of Higger Tor shortly after sunrise.
Rapidly clearing mist and cloud finally allowing a view of Higger Tor and Over Owler Tor from Stanage Edge. A view minutes earlier even the road was hidden from sight by the cloud and mist.
A three stitch panorama.

The best of the weather managed to escape me this week, so here’s a moody morning shot from Higger Tor.
The Hope Valley from Higger Tor at dawn. Glorious morning, worth getting up at 4am for.
