double backed from Stanage Edge, descending down past the abandoned millstones and made my way across to Higger Tor. I sat at the Kit Kat stones for a while hoping for some interesting light, however it never happened (I always seem to have the dullest looking skies when I attempt to photograph there) to this end I decided to move on.

A scene I wanted to revisit was the Chris Gilbert composition (front cover: Photographing The Peak District - Fotovue) of Higger Tor shot from Carl Wark, one of a few little studies of set compositions I've begun. Last time I shot this, it was December 2021 during golden hour where browns, oranges and yellows dominated the colour palette. Spring is well underway in High Peak now and the burnt hues are slowly being replaced by vibrant greens and soon to be rich purples when the heather blooms.

The weather worked its magic for me this time, a break in the cloud spilling dappled light onto Higger Tor against the backdrop of a rather threatening sky that thankfully didn't bring with any downpours.

This was the last photograph of the day, my hike back down Burbage valley involved numerous detours around peat bogs, it's never straight forward getting from A to B in the peaks but something about peat bogs complicating what should otherwise be a straight forward quarter mile stretch of land that just irks me! All part of the fun maybe?

Too late to see the heather in full bloom but still a gorgeous place to be on a nice late summer evening

Taken from Higger Tor. I liked the way the light caught the tree line across the hill. It created some lovely contrasts with other hills both in front and behind.

Had a bracing walk up over Higger Tor today and managed to avoid most of the showers. Came home to the news that Christmas arrangements are pretty much screwed for everyone, so not feeling particularly joyful. Good luck and stay safe!

Today was a bad photo day!!

Had great opportunities for shooting and my session with a Common Blue was spoilt by making a camera setting adjustment and not checking afterwards that it was doing as expected.

I spent the rest of the day shooting on the wrong setting and ruined a lot of photo's.

Only one person to blame and I'm quite annoyed with him! :-)

Back to school - next time, review every image and don't be so lazy!

This photo of Higger Tor looking out to Over Owler on a sunny afternoon would of been much much better.

Taken from Higger Tor.

A six shot panorama, worth viewing at the largest size.

Trip to the peaks to try and catch the last of the snow before the rain comes in. Nice side light hitting the side of Higger Tor as the sun just up comes above the ridge line behind.

Higger Tor or Higgar Tor is a gritstone tor in the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District National Park in England. It overlooks the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark to the southeast.

The tor stands to the south west of Sheffield, east of the border with Derbyshire, which runs along the nearby road to Ringinglow.

A scene from the 1987 film The Princess Bride was filmed nearby at Carl Wark with Higger Tor visible in the background.

This photo was created by combining two bracketed exposures (2EV) using the Lightroom HDR module. The result has been processed using Camera Raw, Color Efex 4 and some minor adjustments in Photoshop.

Sunrise on Higger Tor, Peak District UK.

After a few attempts, finally a sunrise where some of the sun reaches the landscape. A light dusting of snow and a frost helped things too.

Hope you're not getting too bored of these. It's another one from my sunrise shoot last week. Not had chance to go out for a while. Not as happy with the composition on this one but I like the fact it includes Over Owler Tor on the right as well as Carl Wark on the left. The light was really good too.
