A fantastic morning on Higger Tor when it all just comes together. Albeit briefly.

At first, with the hill cloaked in low cloud, it didn't look too promising. However, the sun managed to sneak below the cloud line briefly as it cleared the horizon, then light up the mist with quite breath taking effect.

One of those morning that serves as a reminder why I love landscape photography and the places I visit so much!

More photos from a walk at the end of August, when the heather was in full bloom.

This is my first attempt at shooting the Milky way using a star tracker.

I bought the Move Shoot Move star tracker back in April during lockdown, and finally got chance to try it out last month. I went to Higger Tor in the Peak District for it's first outing. The foreground is a two minute exposure and the sky was tracked for one minute, then the two images blended together in Photoshop.

Had a trip out Saturday morning to meet up with Andrew Yu and Chris Charlesworth. We met up at Mam Tor in a blanket of fog, but quickly relocated to Higger Tor, as Chris had driven past earlier and said it was clearer. Well, needless to say, in the meantime, the mist had descended over Higger, but I think we all managed to get something from our morning, before calling it a day.

Quite windy and hard to avoid camera shake, but the best display I have been able to watch with the naked eye from Derbyshire. Just totally stunning :)

Lose Hill (in sunlight) and Win Hill (in shadow) standing proud as guardians to the entrance to the Vale of Edale.

Late afternoon sunlight breaks through the clouds above Hope Valley to send catchlights down to the valley floor and on to Lose Hill which stands at the end of the Great Ridge, leading from Mam Tor.

I hung around to se if a hint of sunset colour would come through the low cloud base, but as would be expected, it was very subtle at best, which is fine by me as I am not a fan of strong sunrise/sunset skies as too often they unbalance an image.

The view West from the Fiddler's Elbow Road towards Hathersage. The area in the foreground is managed for nature, with diverse scrub above herb-rich meadows. The low cloud sat in the valleys most of the day on Sunday, only periodically clearing to reveal the countryside below.

Golden hour gritstone compositions on Higger tor

A popular spot but one I've never visited before. I was hoping to see some heather out but it's bit too soon for that. I need to go back in a couple of weeks

love how the last rays of sun just caught the thistles

Higger Tor - Derbyshire

Higger Tor or Higgar Tor is a gritstone tor in the Dark Peak, in the north of the Peak District National Park in England. It overlooks the Burbage Valley and the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark[1] to the southeast.

The tor stands to the south west of Sheffield, east of the border with Derbyshire, which runs along the nearby road to Ringinglow.

A scene from the 1987 film The Princess Bride was filmed nearby at Carl Wark with Higger Tor visible in the background.
