Box from hexagonal elephant paper with little tessellation on it.

Invented by me (?)

While waiting for more wooly color for the other hexagon play, I started this set in cotton--perfect timing as it was HOT in the valley today!

Fish, and a little hen. And what more can you find here?

I usually have a few long-term projects on the go (projects that end up taking me multiple years), so I wanted to make a 'quick' project. Someone gave me the striped navy blue fabric and I didn't know what to do with it. This winter I realized that it would make a great bag, and the blue would go so well with red, pink and orange. All but one these hexagon fabrics is Kaffe Fasset.

I handstitched the hexagons over the course of a month or two. For the bag I followed a tutorial called Simple Lined Tote by Felicity Quilts, on the 'OCD: Obsessive Crafting Disorder' blog. I changed the dimensions a bit (like making the straps longer). I will probably make a few other adjustments if I make another bag. The gussets at the bottom were new to me. Not sure I would do it that way again.

I hand appliqued the heart to the bag, then used red thread to essentially quilt each separate hexagon.

One of the best parts is that I only used my stash (including the thread) and scraps to make it.

Engineering Building, Coventry University

Same unit as this one, folded from squares of gold kraft paper. CP.

Red stars are pursed twists from hexagons of german wrapping paper, you've seen them here already.

A special commission from the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art. An amazing paper cut framed in a hexagonal frame and held between two pieces of glass to create a shadow on the wall its hung against. Very happy with how this one turned out.

Quilt completion is several months away so whipping up some tiny hexies the size of a dime and turning them into a keychain gave me instant gratification and a great way to use super small scraps. Two flowers are sewn back to back so it is double sided.

Yet another crochet project on the go, thanks to Lucy at Attic 24's brilliant hexagon tutorial

Tri-Oval Sphere Tutorial (to make the top dome): www.youtube.com/watch?v=v26m-9rO30s

This is a light armor helmet that was inspired by the classic RPG games of Diablo, Skyrim, Hellgate London, etc... It is made out of gold, silver, and black NeoBalls along with some Zen Magnets.

The base dome of the helm is formed using four of my Tri-Oval subunits with the holes filled in. Horns were created using folded extended hexagons. The nose and rear neck plate protection were fashioned to look like scaled plate armor. The shape of the eye protection and the horns reminded me of a Fennec Fox ... hence, the name. This helm design is actually an extension that grew out of an original Viking helmet concept. The result is a keeper.

Because of the black NeoBalls, I kept the lighter background over a darker one to prevent them from blending in too much.

(@679 = Viking Helmet top section) = (Tri-Oval 1/2 sphere=(3 x 36-ball Oval Subunit)) + (top filler=8-ball ring + 4-ball + 1-ball) + (hole fillers=(4 x (6-ball rings + 1-ball center)) + (4 x (4-ball rings)) + (horn mounts=(2 x (6-hex + 12-hex + 2-ball top +2+2-ball bottom inside reinforcement on two sides) + (Horns=(2 x (4L-Hex=(60-ball) + 4+3+2+1-ball tip folded in half + 4 x 1-ball hole fill back/front))

(@088) = Nose/Eye plate = (52-ball nose plate) + (6-ball + 4-ball ring accents + 2 x 1-ball jewel colored) + (2 x (2 x 6-ball + 6-ball eye plates ) + (3-ball triangle nose to helm bridge)

(@236 ) = Rear scaled plate protection = (5 x (46-ball plates)) + (2-balls added to 2 outer top 4 added helm bridge support) + (4 x 1-ball spacers between plates)

Replaced accents with 2 x red rubies, 1 green emerald, 1 blue sapphire for the jewel effect.

It is sitting on top of a Mag-Lite flashlight ... the handle diameter was perfect.

This was made for the Zen Magnets Contest 17: Hatch Magnetic Headgear challenge ... zenmagnets.com/blog/?p=465

Six half columns to go

I didn't include 2 half hexagons, to fill in the top, because it leaves more room for my arm.

Material : hexagon of colored kraft paper.

Variation on dice tessellation created by Ralf Konrad.

No new creases added to the dice model, I had just to pop up the little stars embedded into the design.

Result is like Owesen stars (sorry, Fredrik, no credit for you here) : these little stars are also part of Konrad's work, see here

Harpa Concert Hall - Interior

Reykjavik, Iceland

This is around eight feet high: 75 hexagonal antiprism layers, 1800 rods and 525 balls.

Total weight is: 13kg or 29lb

Ok there is some advanced Geomaggery going on here. See the cutting board at floor level? And the basket next to it? That's my "shim kit". The San Francisco house in which this tower was erected has seen a couple of big earthquakes, and none of the floors are level.

The board is leveled using sheets of cork and a spirit level, otherwise the tower would have collapsed long before.

Using data from this page: Rod Weights I see that a single ball weights 8.6g and a rod weighs 4.7g, and I used my degree in advanced mathematics to come up with the weight.

Model for the virtual math museum

I made this hexagon back in October during my month of illness while watching "Pet Sematary". I got a chuckle over the sweetness of this block with the playful kittens frolicking in comparison to the cat in the movie who was all undead and stuff....

The center hex was fussy cut from a vintage dresser scarf I found at the thrift store.

Charm pack from my lovely friend Lisa. Thank you Lisa! Perfect project to do at my in-laws place. I do love orange.

I found a couple more photos I never posted of the afghan "in progress". Whenever the cooler weather finally gets here, I need to work on weaving in all the remaining loose ends, and then I should take a few more photos of the whole thing... (With decent lighting, for a change!)
