Paper: Octagon, Hexagon, Pentagon cutted from Wrapping Paper, 10 cm Square

Model: Paul Groom

I found the diagram for the triangle box in my last year's Origami Calender. After folding it, it was obvious that this works for any polygon. So I made some more. Most fun was the square box: Starting with a pentagon, just to end up with something square was kind of weird....

Back in the early 1960s, when local architect Neil Taylor, of Fisher, Hollingsworth & Partners designed Gainsborough's Guildhall for the (now defunct) Urban District Council, only high grade, modern materials were used. Construction utilised the most up-to-date practices for putting up concrete buildings, and the structure was clad in expensive Portland stone, Westmorland slate, and hand-finished facing bricks. No less care was taken with the immediate surroundings: trees were planted, there were elegant inverted cone-shaped planters (I know of two survivors), and, in the landscaped area in front of the building, these hexagonal concrete pavers. Commonplace enough nowadays, but back in 1965 when these were specified, they were a bespoke order. Its all in the detail, you see.

What now of this paragon of modern architectural thought? This paved area is nearly all that remains of the Guildhall "concourse". The building itself was demolished in October 2013, having stood empty for a couple of years, abandoned by the District Council that inherited the building from the Gainsborough UDC.

This is an up-close shot of a bicycle reflector. I think that the production of these things may be a little more complex than I realized.

The part of my mind with a scientific/mechanical-knowledge tells me that a reflector must be able to bounce light back towards its source in order to be reflective yet must also bounce light in various directions, too, making a simple mirror less effective in this task. I imagine that this arrangement of hexagons must scatter the light into a predictable dispersal pattern reflecting light out in a fan rather than just a beam.

Anyhow, taking a closer look at this really got me thinking about my subject and that's a good thing, right?!

my first finished project of 2012! i started this blanket last april with twenty-one skeins of wool of the andes, and i finally finished the border on sunday. i love the size of it - narrowish and long - and it'll be perfect for snuggles on the couch watching movies and drinking a hot cup of cocoa while listening to the wind whistle outside.

As Carmen Sprungs Scheestern this is based on a hexagonal twist and therefore it's possible to use this in tessellations.

Stash Hexagon Quilt using mostly 30's reproduction fabrics from my stash which were purchased in the early 90's. The Kona white solid used for the background & border is the only new, non stash fabric. Batting, also from my stash, is Hobbs Heirloom Cotton (actually it's an 80% cotton 20% poly blend).

Quilt size is approximately 50" x 72" after washing & drying. It was approximately 55" x 76" before quilting, washing & drying.

This quilt was begun in June 2010 following Julie Herman's Hexagon Quilt Along www.jaybirdquilts.com/2010/06/hexagon-quilt-along-finishi...

With the exception of the Kona white, all fabrics were fat quarters. The back was pieced from the left overs as was the binding.

Aurifil Mako 50 wt cotton thread 2024 White was used for the quilting. Purchased from Pink Chalk Fabrics www.pinkchalkfabrics.com/index.php?main_page=index

I used EQ7 to help finalize the layout.

Based on this new molecule (rhombus twist on top of an elongated hexagon), resembling an hexagonal cut used in jewelry.

I´m preparing an extended / compact version with 80 division grid.

This has just left for a swap. My hexagonal string looks less hexagonal because of the outlining Barney tangles xD But hey, there are hexagons in the Barneys too!

Just working on this during my lunch hours, having a lot of fun playing with the colors at random. A very enjoyable and easy pattern, perfect for using up stash! (Which is great because a new box of yarn JUST arrived at work today.) :-)

A closer view of my hexagons

Primeiramente, um esmalte chamado "Correnteza" obviamente me lembra azul.

Obrigada!! ♥

Bjs a todas! :***

Hexagonal Castle/Building built for Gothic Part III: Nocturnal. Finished last minute while packing for Bricking Bavaria.

224 wonderful baby hexi-circles. Finished. All ready to be turned into grown up fully fledged hexagons. I can't wait. Many thanks to Lucy from attic24 for the wonderful tutorial

The hexagon blanket continues to grow. I still need to add to the width but I've established the top and the right side edges. As you can see, the quality of the pictures has greatly improved. I've got my talented daughter, the photog, to take care of the glamour shots for me.
