On the morning of the wedding, the groom has to be given a bath (in public!) by his female relatives.
The whole ceremony starts with the sister of the groom collecting water in an intricate urn, and carrying the urn on her head back to the house.
The sister is accompanied by a procession of friends and family, dancing to the beat of a drum band.
In the surveys eyes4earth carries out around the world, when we ask people what they understand by the term "ecosystem services" many answer with something like "the things people do to protect healthy ecosystems". Whilst that isn't how it is defined in science (which is the other way around: i.e. the benefits we get from ecosystems), this image certainly shows the sort of things we can do to help nature out a bit. This photo is from the tree-planting ceremony at the 2009 SAARMSTE Conference (Grahamstown, South Africa) which engaged in some 'greening' activities with eyes4earth (Climate-Culture) to assist the restoration of local landscapes. The activity provided ecosystem services too: carbon storage; science & education; reduced erosion; habitat; and recreation & inspiration.
