A youth gives a helping hand to this tortoise which is struggling to get into the water basin at the top.
This detail is from the delightful Fontana delle Tartarughe (Fountain of the Tortoises) in Piazza Mattei in Rome.
It was commissioned by the Mattei family to decorate "their" piazza between 1581 and 1588. The design was by Giacomo della Porta. The four bronze youths, each resting a foot on the head of a dolphin, were sculpted by Taddeo Landini. The tortoises were added nearly a century later by an unknown sculptor.
