This used to be the Helmsman. A terrible place in glass and aluminium with sticky carpets and a queue for the fights at kicking out time.

I used to like it.

The flybridge is a wonderful location - enjoyable when the conditions allow, and much better than the lower helm position when manoeuvring in tight spaces because you can see both ends of the boat. I also find it easier to judge cross tides when up there. However, we discovered that the pvc covered seat cushions are not waterproof (water gets in through the stitching). They had always been stowed below when the boat was not in use, but when we are on board, they live 'upstairs'. Not good if it rains! So we are having a pedestal style cover made to go over the upper helmsman's bench. The side cushion easily stows there too. With any luck this will eliminate the need to bring these cushions below even when we leave the boat as they will be protected from both rain and UV, except when the flybridge is in use.

I took the wheel for the departure from Rotterdam, where we narrowly avoided a collision with a river barge. This photo was taken just after I handed over to another watch member. I still have the report from the cruise that was sent to my dad and it speaks of this nearly incident. The ship is the Princess Juliana Harwich-Hook of Holland Car Ferry. October 8th 1970. This was the first occasion on which I had steered a boat of any kind other than very small rowing boats. About five minutes after casting off, the pilot turned to me and barked "PORT". I put the wheel hard over and thought little more of it. A minute or so later, he said "WHEEL AMIDSHIPS", and I returned the wheel to the central position. Little did I know that my mates on the bow were watching in awe as we came within feet of the large river vessel. From the position of the helmsman just forward of the mizzen mast, virtually nothing is visible forward. That is why the pilot is standing on the deckhouse!

Everyone loves meeting Rock & Fred and Willie & Bill, the huge draft horse teams that pull the canal boat along an original section of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Travelers on the (seasonal) 45-minute canal boat ride are also entertained by the lively Canal Boat Captain as he explains 1800s life on the canal with tall tales and history, creating the feeling of actually gliding right into the 1830s.

Be entertained by the Canal Boat Captain as he explains 1800s life on the canal. You'll hear tall tales and a lot of history told in first person so you'll feel like you've actually glided right into the 1830s. You might even get to assist the helmsman in steering the canal boat while on your journey.

Underneath the center console notice built-in indents for the helmsman’s feet allowing them to get closer to the controls in heavier conditions. Also note the fire extinguisher conveniently located right at the feet of the helmsman.

First of what is sure to be an annual event, Dragon Boat Races on the Ohio River in Paducah, Kentucky. Twenty-six teams of 20 with a drummer and a helmsman raced in heats of three Saturday. We had lovely weather, huge crowds of spectators, lively participants and a lot of fun. The event was a fund raiser for our River Discovery Center, an educational organization about all things pertaining to the rivers in our area.

This area is just below the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers and upstream to where they meet and merge with the mightly Mississippi.
