After 2 education programs, a trash scout, and camping through 4 storms, we were very heartbroken to cancel the cleanup and festival. We would like to thank our sponsors, partners, crew, and friends from the Washington Area River Council for the hard work and support to make these large-scale events happen. We greatly appreciate all the exhibitors, musicians, and artists who stayed on-call until the very end! Additionally, we'd love to thank individuals from the City of Washington who were there to help with the cleanup, especially helping with emergency response.
Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather!

Here, you can see the other arch visible from the section of the trail we took, and I find this arch much more dramatic. This is called Lover's Leap, after just the kind of legend all Lover's Leaps everywhere are named. According to local lore, this tale originated with an Ojibwa girl whose betrothed had gone off to fight a battle against the enemy Sioux. The girl stood at the edge of the rock above the arch day after day, waiting for the warriors to return. But when the canoes finally did return and she scanned the faces of the brave warriors, her beloved was not among them. Turns out, he was tied to a tree somewhere with an arrow through his heart, which isn't the kind of thing that gets you dates. Heartbroken, the girl imagined she saw her lover's spirit floating dead in the water among the canoes, so she jumped in after it.
Pretty much all cultures have some version of this story, though, so who knows where the story actually comes from? That's just the story the tour boats tell.
We are heartbroken that Blue will not be getting the cataract surgery. The ERG test showed she has very little retinal function and soon will have none. The retina in the eye is equivalent to the film in a camera. PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) is an inherited disease for which there is no cure. Being incapable of self-pity, Blue was very happy to share some fried cheese curds from Culver's with me as I swam in my own sorrow during the long ride home.
Today my little boy started Kindergarten! I am in absolute disbelief....I just don't know where the time has gone! In just 3 weeks he will be 5.

My 2nd attempt at "painting with light"
f22 and a 15 second shutter speed.
I was in a completely dark room.

"She asked, 'Are you going to be okay?' My eyes stayed locked onto my wringing hands as I responded, 'No. Nothing is okay'. I heard the door close and was mostly gone."

From Governor Jan Brewer, "I am deeply saddened and heartbroken over the tragic events in
Tucson. I ask that all citizens of Arizona and America join me in thoughtful prayer and sincere
reflection for the families of the following victims: Judge John Roll, Gabe Zimmerman, Dorwin
Stoddard, Dorthy Morris, Phyllis Scheck and 9-year-old Christina Green. Pray for the health of
Rep. Giffords and for the other individuals who were also injured."
The youngest victim of the shooting was 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, who was attending
the listening event with a neighbor. Green was interested in politics at an early age and had
just been elected onto her elementary school’s student council. She was an avid ballerina,
but hailed from a family of baseball players—she was the daughter of the L.A. Dodgers scout
John Green and the granddaughter of former major league pitcher and former Phillies
manager Dallas Green. In a tragic twist, the young girl was born on 9/11/01 and
was featured as one of 50 children in a book titled Faces of Hope.
