Day 192b-Orson Bean has died....sigh...
I am heartbroken. My Mum told me this afternoon that Orson Bean has died and most horrid way which makes it even more heartbreaking. He will always be the voice of Bilbo Baggins from the Rankin-Bass adaptation of The Hobbit from 1977. It may not be the best adaptation but it was the first one I ever saw and it got me excited for the book that I read many many times through my life and introduced me to Tolkien. I still remember the names of all the swords, though Bilbo's a dagger but big enough for a Hobbit. His voice always conveyed so much to me, even as a kid, I could feel his anguish and excitement and a bit of over-confidence (I do love maps, I have quite a collection you know). It played a big part in my life as well as with Star Wars, Indy and Arthur, among others. I even have the read along record and book. Plus, I have the VHS release and the DVD release as well. Though the DVD doesnt have the ambient sounds during the songs which is quite off putting after hearing a certain way for 40 plus years. This is the actual CED I watched as a kid.
I saw Orson on Twilight Zone years later, as the eccentric Mr. Bevis which really seemed to fit him well. He had a stories career and was always so endearing. Im sorry he had to go the way he did but Im happy that he touched so many with his talent.
Sad day.
