I popped one clip on the right side. I used a plastic bike tire-mounting tool to pry open the slot more, but it wasn't that helpful because I needed 3 hands for it. Basically I just reached under and behind the climate knobs and pulled out. All the accounts I had read said that it would be a bear and that you would feel that you were breaking the dash and everything. It did.
This stereo could not play mp3 CDs and did not have a line-in for playing from an iPod.
Note that for the de-installation all of the temperature and climate controls at the bottom should be on the far left (turned counterclockwise all the way). The air circulation knob above them should be set as shown, I think.

I got the main panel out! It was held by 7 clips. Two fell out early in my tug-of-war with the panel. The other 5 stayed in the panel. One clip or something slightly dinged the top right lip of the dash, but it is barely noticeable.
In this pic I have already unplugged the main head unit harness, but the other controls need to be unplugged.

The next step (even before unclipping the cables) is to remove the panel below the temperature controls. This panel is held by a Phillips screw below the middle control and by two clips inside. I felt around for the clips and tried using my camera to spot them. Eventually I found the right side clip by touch. After that pulled out, I was able to find the left side clip.

Reason behind it, I want to listen to my own music which is stored on my iPod.
The Metra kit instructions (which were far more complete and detailed than the Scosche non instructions) recommended reconnecting the battery at this point and testing the unit before reinstalling the whole front panel. I did and everything worked at first except the tuner. This was because I had forgotten to plug in the antenna adapter (blue wires on the bottom right). When I plugged them in, everything worked OK.

Here's the complete head until with the climate controls, their cables, and even the blue cable clip all together.
Using my camera to see around the corner. I think the white nib surrounded by black on the right side of the bottom left corner is the clip, but I didn't see it in the small LCD screen of my camera.
I suppose one could unplug the climate control plug in the center here, as well as the small plug to the left of it. But I did that last, when I realized the main panel wasn't coming out.

In desperation, I just unscrewed the whole clip assembly, because I could not see or figure out how to unclip this one. It required pulling the cable out, then down, and I think around to release.
I could not figure out how to release this clip. I tried to get a clearer picture with the camera, but no such luck.
I started to unscrew the metal guide panels from the original head unit, but these plastic ones had clips to guide the double DIN unit into the dash unit, so I thought Scosche put them in for a reason.
I just unscrewed the whole clip and hoped it would work. It was probably a little more difficult to thread the cable with the clip assembly out of the dash and back, but it turned out not to be that hard.

I assume the blue antenna control goes to the blue wire out of the Scosche antenna kit. That will be the first thing I solder.
