I have long had this creature on my Bucket List of shots I wanted to capture. My husband took a trip to YNP with a friend and was able to spot a badger burrow. I was so envious when he came home with a few shots. On one outing, I saw a badger moving through the weeds with the tail showing, but never did I get the full view. Finally in 2021 I found my first Badger family.
The location was in YNP near Lamar Valley. I spent many hours watching for some action. Mom, (the sow) often peeked out of the burrow (setts) to check out the photographers. The American Badger is a nocturnal hunter. They are fossorial carnivores, as they catch a large portion of food when they tunnel after rodents with great speed. This badger was a solitary, with only one home. Mom had three cubs (kits), but on the day of filming, a coyote had capture one baby. The next day, another cub disappeared. Mom was very attentive, and would pull the badger out for daily grooming. I think she actually felt safer with the photographer watching her home. When Mom did leave the burrow, I was shocked to see her long body (which can be 23-30 inches long and can weigh 14-19 lbs. for females and the bore can weigh more). I never saw the male.
They have powerful front claws and can run 16-19 mph for a short distance. They eat coyotes and other small mammals, with added protein from worms and bugs. The grizzled black-brown and white pelts are used for shaving brushes and paint brushes. The America Indian along with other groups often ate the meat from the badger.

Have to admit the D700 struggles just a bit with dynamic range in a scene like this -- probably the reason multiple-exposure HDR became popular about 10 years ago, when this generation of cameras was state-of-the-art. No worries, it's still become my favorite camera to shoot with.

i have decided to only post photos of my brother, until he is laid to rest. because when he first caught COVID, he was taken to OSU medical center in Columbus Ohio for his critical care, i have to wait until he is cremated there, sent back here, then sent to a national cemetery also here WV.
sorry for all the morbid details about some old guy who just died. its just that he has been so helpful to me since i moved here in 2000, i feel i owe it to him, at least.

Having been up late the night before for sunset, we didn't get an awful lot of sleep, three hours in fact, before rising to make the short journey along the road to Luskentyre Beach.
What a truly stunning location this is, miles and miles of crystal clear water and unspoilt silvery white sand, with a backdrop of mountainous mist covered ridges.
To say I was like a child in a sweetie shop, would be an understatement. It took me a fair while before deciding on a LE, as I was unsure if any colour would actually come.
As it turned out I was treated to some beautiful turquoise tones and some lovely light, just breaking the cloud formation.
I could have spent the whole day here but I could see Ken was a little weary, partly through lack of sleep and also carrying my heavier gear bless him.
It's one I can now cross off the bucket list. Not sure I've done it the justice it deserves but a rather peaceful, dreamy image.

Fog is something that fascinates me every time I am amidst of it. As the clouds roll and the winds start to pick up, the fog gently lifting and the sun's rays beaming through all makes for a compelling wintry morning...
As we gear up to it, I was reminiscing with one I had shot a few years ago in Kerala, India. Munnar is one of the most renowned hill stations in Southern India. It brims with vast expanses of tea estates and the tea plantation is something that generates a lot of revenue for the country.
The name Munnar is believed to mean "three rivers", referring to its location at the confluence of the Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers.
This was shot from one of the locations up in the mountains and would you believe at 10 AM in the morning! It was that foggy that morning.
If you see it for a while, your eyes could start discerning the other trees amidst the fog...

We have a ton of Peacocks that wander around the ocean side of Cape Canaveral. The story I heard was a farmer had them years ago and when he sold his farm he left them and well the flourished. Not sure how true it is, I have had stories about other birds that are living outside their native area before.
Since I was a boy, I've liked this beautiful and innocent way of having fun very much.

The olive-backed sunbird, also known as the yellow-bellied sunbird.
It was extremely difficult to capture because of excess light and quick response of the bird!!

It looks like these Adelie Penguins are having a lot of fun on their ice island. Taken from a zodiac near Paulet Island, which is a circular island off the north-east end of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is a popular tourist stop because of the large Adelie Penguin colony. This was the fifth penguin 🐧 species that we saw on our cruise 🚢 to Falklands Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica.

Little Photoshopping fun here on this Christmas Eve ... took a silhouette capture I had taken at the Grand Canyon this summer of the pretty night sky, and then pulled the lit up peace doves off the ceramic tree I had captured in the dark the other day and placed them all over this one tree that Did look like the perfect Christmas Tree there along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Added the lens flare star for the tree topping ... wanted it to look like a supernovae :)
Note to self ... placing lights on that tree for real would be quite the challenge there along the rim!
Here we have another bird that has been eluding me for a while folks, but managed a few of this guy.
