We have arrived feeling very tired after almost 40 hours on the go with only a few catnaps on the plane. As ou can see, Lou Lou the mouse is happy in our first B&B where we are staying 3 nights.
I have been enjoying this little sign in the subway for many mornings. Tried to get a good shot this morning, but just got a lot of blur. Went back after work and took this picture. Love the swoosh the guy made as he passed!

I have phtographed before the two Hadashville buildings posted today but I liked the backlight of this one and the view I had of the other in this light. The buidlings have something in common besides location: both have fake brick exteriors. This has insulbrick, whereas the other has metal cladding that looks like brick.
Having performed a double run around on the siding here just west of MP 89 on the former Maine Central Mountain Subdivision, 4266 and 573 are now positioned on the east end of the train while 216 is on the west. The train is departing west and will travel another 10 miles on the rarely used trackage to Quebec Junction where the Beecher Falls branch once left the mainline to continue into the north country. This special event is an annual excursion sponsored by the 470 Railroad Club of Portland, ME that owns the 4266 and much of the other historic equipment found in North Conway.
Boston and Maine power is no stranger to Fabyan and in fact the B&M once had it's own branchline passing through to the Cog Railway base station. Even long after that was abandoned the B&M retained trackage rights over the MEC to this point. Furthermore B&M power often pooled with the MEC during the decades of joint ownership, as seen in this image of a Maine Central train westbound taken from the opposite end of the station: www.nashuacitystation.org/resource/9304011160/ As for the station itself, I'm not sure exactly when it was built, but I believe it was around 1910. The last scheduled passenger train called in 1958 and for many years it was a popular and quite good restaurant that sadly does not appear to have survived the pandemic loss of business. Here's hoping it finds another life!

Have you ever had a memory card ERROR message right in the middle of shooting a Great Blue Heron in flight?
It happened to me today! It's my first GBH of this summer. I was a little disappointed, but this sweet thing flew back in front of me seconds after I fixed the problem! How cool is that?! :)

I have a number of appointments today and for the next three days. I'm pretty certain that I'll have time to post and make comments, but I'm not really sure since two of the appointments are about my eye (much, much better, but not entirely in focus). Nine weeks without driving, and my car's battery is dead! That's just insult to injury...
Heather Farm has a rose garden. Although I started to find roses "mundane" even in 2006, there is nothing mundane about some roses, especially these. I don't know anything about roses other than that they're beautiful, especially in a pristine state as these were.
I have previously posted a bit similar photo but was endlessly unhappy with the position of the wooden log. This is an improved composition to the previous one, now with the leading lines converging at the Cappella. It also reveals the chopped wood that adds so much to the sphere.
Amongst the colourful southern Tuscany countryside beside the village of Vitaleta, lies a charming little Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta. One of the most photographed churches in Tuscany, this mystical building used to be the home of a Renaissance statue of the Madonna sculpted by the artist, Andrea della Robbia in 1590. Built in the middle of a hill, this spectacular attraction was restored in 1184 by the architect Giuseppe Partini and was recently classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Dotted across this magnificent countryside are many peaceful holiday villas and luxury accommodation to stay in and soak in the undisturbed natural beauty of the area.
I have been photographing this little house since 2007. The house was covered in Kudzu vines and the tree was full and healthy. At some point through the years the landowner attempted to kill the Kudzu vines but the plant is tough stuff and survived. It doesn't show up much in this winter shot since it loses it's leaves in winter, but it's coming back slowly towards the house. Also at some point the tree was struck by lightning and has split, part of it falling next to the house..

Have you ever had the experience of suddenly noticing something startlingly different on a familiar walk? Something that was always there, blindingly obvious, and yet you missed it until just now? For me, this was it. Just a block off of the Main Drag in Morro Bay, I've walked innumerous times, evidently I'v always had my head down looking at other things (which are plenty). This time I happened to look up and had to stop and take a step back. These Cacti were huge and had plainly been there for quite awhile! And I gotta say, really impressive! Glad my Fairy Godmother finally yanked my nose up!
I have a vivid recollection of a day when I was a little tyke. I was crabby, and probably acting like most young kids do when they're crabby. My grandmother pushed me gently toward the backyard and said, "David, when you're feeling unhappy, go outside and open your ears. Listen to the buzzing of the insects, the chirping of the birds, and the sound of the wind in the trees. Everything you need to make you feel good is right in front of you. You only have to listen."
Here, many years later, shooting along the Bear River, I could almost hear my grandmother's wise voice, whispering to me, as the river cascaded over the rocks. Reminding me to listen to the natural sounds that surrounded me. Reminding me how to find my center.

Newts have evolved to engage in unique mating practices. Males and females are drawn together through a potent release of hormones. The male grabs the female from behind and wrestles her to the bottom of the water, where he deposits a sperm package on a leaf. The female then uptakes the sperm into an opening leading to her sex organ.
In some species, as with this eastern spotted newt, the female has small appendages on either side of the opening to assist her. This is a rare photo of a female swimming alone with these appendages still extended. She has either just mated or is looking to do so.
