Thomas Edison's pride and joy - the incandscent light bulb. This is a halogen. Nearing extinction.
A century from now it will be on display in museums and people will in disbelief say, " They made light by running electrical current through a wire? Really?"...

Lido Blue and Saxe Blue completed, dehumidifier protecting from condensation, halogen fire drying out paint in 4C temperature (window open). Natural light, no tripod.
This lamp produces a very good quality light ideal for singletrack or head mounted. It is also ideal for road use where a brighter beam is required
What can I say, sometimes I just want to take a picture of myself where there's harsh, dramatic light. Mostly single bulb halogen...two additional bulbs doing their own thing.

One of our more adventurous DIY projects. We demo'd the sagging wet plaster ceiling in the living room, retaining the coved ceiling by using a RotoZip spiral saw around the perimeter to get a clean cut through the plaster and lathe. Then we installed 10 small halogen recessed lights, drywall, two wall switches and two wall sconces--all in four weekends. Weekend one - demolish; weekend two - wire; weekend three - install drywall. We hired someone to do the mudding. Then the following weekend we painted.

50W Halogen MR16s. The facilities manager as well as the manager and wait-staff told complained about customers complaining about heat from the lamps as well as the glare. These lamps had wide beam angles, 36 degrees and washed the whole room in light, too much excess lighting.
Just a fast snap tonight. They looked unearthly under the streetlight and the photo doesn't really do them justice.
The lamp chosen is a G8 base 75W halogen bulb chosen for its compact filament. It remains to be seen if the heat from this will cause melting of the surrounding plastic. Incidentally, the lamp base wound up being the most expensive part of this project at $15 shipped.
The base is mounted angling away from the lamp to reduce unwanted shadows of the base itself. Also, the little plexi wall hanger can be seen on the center notch. This is sure to break at some point in the future, but it's nothing that 2-part epoxy can't fix.
The Halogen bulb holders are glued into the wood base with Baking Soda saturated with thin CA glue and handle the heat without problems.
I use halogen light tonight and move a lot of furniture in my room to get this shot. Lucky stuffed bear is very patient!

My halogen light broke. No lights in the shower, so I needed to do some shopping. A nice break and cool vibes along the ride.

It's now 2013 and progress has continued to the point that anyone with Halogens running more than 2 hours a day is really throwing money away.
Like last year's release, the LED (on the right) produces a comparable amount of light to the Halogen but only consumes 10w.
It runs very cool so is not only MUCH safer than a halogen, but can also be insulated over the top of (with an adequate guard).
It has an expected lifetime of 30,000 hours, or 10 times as much as a Halogen's 3,000 expected hours.
All very similar to last year. But now the price has almost halved again, to about $20 each!
Oh and an average use (6 hours per day) light will save about $35 per year on electricity use. So in that case it's LESS than a year to pay back.
Again, and stronger. Goodbye Halogens, and probably goodbye to CFLs as well...
