I had a want to do some macro photography. This presented two problems; what to shoot and where to shoot it. As it happened, a busy morning at work gave me the inspiration of what to use, a spent H4 lamp, and then this afternoon the location became apparent, a windowsill providing colour and sunlight from outside.
I don't have a dedicated macro lens so I used my Canon 24-105 L, with the macro setting on the 70D, enabled. This is my first attempt at really trying to photograph a subject on a smaller scale whilst trying to really focus on the detail.
The halogen lighting made so many different lighting effects, and I loved this laid back and relaxing pose
This is the large, 14Ah (lead acid) canister made out of HD-PE. The yellow bit on the left is some foam which keeps the batteries in place.
Photography is a constant learning experience for me as I try to master new techniques, lighting styles, and composition. This shot is part of my efforts to learn how to light still lifes using halogen desk lamps.
Life is about the journey and not the destination.
Bought some Osram Nightbreakers Unlimited bulbs as spare bulbs. I have fitted them now and they are very good bulbs if you need halogen bulbs

Halogen, neon, tungsten, LEDs, flourescent - all these modern lights are in my house but my top favourite is always the gentle glow of simple candle light.

The Volvo FM is a heavy truck range, introduced in 1998 as FM7, FM10 and FM12 production continues with the third generation of FM range. FM stands for Forward control Medium height cab, where the numbers denominate an engine capacity in litres. As of 2005 the engine size is no longer added to the model denomination.
The second generation Volvo FM was launched in 2001 with major revisions, in line with the FH Series. Among changes resulted were 7- and 10-litre engines being dropped and replaced by an all-new 9-litre D9A engine and introduction of a new automated gear-change transmission I-Shift. The new D9A engine developed on the basis of D12 with single overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder and electronic unit injectors with output from 300 - 380 hp In 2003 FM12 with 460 hp (340 kW) D12D was launched as well as new version of Powertronic automatic transmission
The evolution of Volvo FM series continued in 2005 with the release of a new generation of FM trucks powered by an all-new 13-litre D13A engine and improved 9-litre D9B unit and the second-generation I-Shift transmission, The new engines were available in Euro IV emissions standard in both Selective Catalytic Reduction. Power outputs available from 360 hp (270 kW), 400 hp (300 kW), 440 hp (330 kW) and 480 hp (360 kW).
The facelift version based on the FM was unveiled on 19 March 2013, and made its first public appearance was in April at the 2013 Commercial Vehicle Show in the UK. It features a choice of two headlights (a halogen HID and a projector HID) both borrowed from the current generation FH. It also adopts a refreshed grille, and the redesigned dashboard

Seriously, the place is a pit. That's the consequence of getting home from a vacation hours before you have to go to work. Sorry for the shabby tinting.
Here are the important elements in my Day 250 Photo:
* Camera in portrait mode, flash trigger transmitter on the hot shoe.
* Red IKEA wrapping paper as a background. Gaffer's tape holds it up. Incredible stuff, gaffer's tape.
* IKEA Halogen Desklamp to provide dramatic side lighting
* Chandeliers providing overall lighting (brighter here than during the shoot)
* 430EX with the cheap eBay Magic Trigger remote flash trigger. It's at 1/32 power and bounced off the french door to the kitchen. It's main purpose is to light the background.
All there is to it. And the results are great, I think. Thanks to the Strobist for making me start thinking about taking my flash off-camera. The Strobist group is invaluable for off-camera flash ideas.
This is a macro photo of a low-voltage halogen light bulb taken with a Canon S5 IS at full zoom (plus approximately 3x digital zoom) using a Raynox DCR-250 macro adapter. This entire coil is less than 1/16th of an inch (about 1.5mm) across.
The camera is running modified firmware (CHDK). This firmware claims to allow for shutter speeds as fast as 1/33,333ths of a second. I'm not sure I believe it , but this photo shows much more detail of the coil than the photos that I took with the camera set to its normal maximum of 1/3200ths of a second.
Shot with available light - one overhead halogen spotlight. Vivienne, a professional model could only look at the light for a few moments so timing was important.

The negatives have somewhat high contrast. Under these conditions, I recommend 1 gentle agitation every 30 seconds, vice 4.

An ordinary halogen blub in my kitchen, shot with a 300D. It's interesting to note the relative strength of each colour.
As Ladder 2 backs out to leave the scene, you can see how the oscillating white halogen light in the middle of the lightbar directs an attention-getting impulse of light over a wide area in front of the truck.
Lit by a 500W halogen work lamp from the left and a 75W halogen flood from the right. I used some black fabric to block light from hitting the screen and camera. The contrast is much better than in the previous black and white version.
2 x TECHNISUB Vega 2 Halogen Lamp. Item is being used only a few times, but in excellent order, super bright, rings in excellent condition. 121 lumen, 16h, 120m max depth.

Batteries radially distributed around the bulb axis. Thumb operated switch. Most advanced German technology quartz bulbs. Due to the high pressure Halogen gas filled bulbs, the colour temperature is whiter than that of any other bulb of similar wattage. User replacable D cells can be used including Ni-Cad high capacity batteries as well as Alkaline and Zinc Chloride with the bulb.
The VEGA handle system feature has the advantage of allowing it to be held in any position and dramatically reduces the wrist effort. The centre of buoyancy has been calculated 20/30 mm forward of the weight center, the lamp can be handled without effort.

Lighting- One overhead halogen light bulb
For DPS Assignment- this is my choice at the moment.
I struggled a little this week, I'm definitely no expert on lighting and have rarely used it for effect in my photography, I am still relatively new to all this business. I enjoyed the challenge though. And after the discussion on the thread Michelle posted I realised I was really taking the rules literally; no light other than the one source it said so my other two uploads were taken in a pitch black room with an external flash! :) After it was clarified I did this one, one light source above and very slight blue hour ambient light in the room. Which meant at least I could focus OK.
I also wanted to light the candles here but figured that would add another light source so left them off.
I mentioned at the weekend that I was waiting for a delivery of new red bulbs for Laura's electric fire.
Here's the old one, making for an interesting visual image.
Look closely and you can even see the knackered filament!
CD, halogen light and water drops. Light passed through a plastic water bottle to add extra colour variation.
