The Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla) is a small passerine bird in the finch family. It is similar in size and shape to a Common Chaffinch. Breeding-plumaged male Bramblings are very distinctive, with a black head, dark upperparts, orange breast and white belly. Females and younger birds are less distinct, and more similar in appearance to some chaffinches. In all plumages, however, Bramblings differs from Chaffinches in a number of features such as having a white rump and an orange breast contrasting with a white belly. An additional difference for all plumages except breeding-plumaged male Bramblings is the bill colour - yellow in brambling, dull pinkish in Chaffinch.

Brambling are widespread, and in the breeding season, are foundthroughout the forests of northern Europe and Asia. It is migratory, wintering in southern Europe, north Africa, north India, northern Pakistan, China, and Japan. In Europe, it forms large flocks in the winter, sometimes with thousands or even millions of birds in a single flock. Such large gatherings occur especially if beech mast is abundant. (wikipedia)

Bramblings are winter visitors to Ireland, almost always associating with flocks of Chaffinches and other finches. The numbers of Bramblings wintering in Ireland vary from year to year depending on the weather and availability of food in Continental Europe. There are about 20-25 Brambling mixed in with a flock of 200+ Chaffinches on the main avenue into Powerscourt House and Gardens in Co. Wicklow. This photograph was taken while I was sitting in my car, which I was using as a blind. The Brambling is a species that is always wonderful to see. This is a male in winter plumage.

So it's been 20 years since I have been to spray park, and boy did I pick a grand day to come. Yesterday I was looking at weather data across the pacific northwest, and at last minute I chose to come here. I arrived later than I hoped to (and I was hustling and out of breath), so I had not much scouting time. Yes the wild flowers are nice up there, they are just at their peak, perhaps a little past their prime, and the lupines did not grow as tall this season.

And let me tell you, the mosquitoes are terrible right now! Anyways, I did see an elusive Pine Martin, he walked right in front of me. I had never seen one in the wild before. I also noticed a big fat Hoary Marmot sitting on a rock close to me. I didn't take photos because I had my super wide on.

Now for the nitty gritty. The sky was awesome, and to boot, the moon was there to add another dimension. So I climbed a little higher than the main part of spray park and found an alpine "lake."

I tried several comps and this one is my fave. This was very difficult. I was literally being swarmed by mosquitoes. They were on my lens, biting my eyebrows, ears, knuckles, everywhere! They were biting through my jacket, and when I was holding my neutral grad in front of my lens they just attacked my hand and had a feast. I couldn't move, and blowing on them did not work. I had to stay cool. I had my mirror locked up and I wasn't going to risk touching the camera and ruin the several second exposure. Just had to tough it out; no pain, no gain I guess.

This was one of the best light shows I have ever seen. So blessed to have been there!

So I had to hike out in the dark (4 miles to trail head) and l am no stranger of doing this (this is how great photos are made), but in them woods are some spooky sounds. I just kept whistling and making noise, always looking behind me with my headlamp to make sure I was not being tailed by a cougar. Pretty soon I was in the darkest and quietest part of the woods and I heard a loud snap behind me and some fast foot work. I froze and just about browned my shorts! I'm thinking, what, a cougar, bear, a yeti? LOL! I picked up my pace and I couldn't been happier to get back to my car, which I "slept" in for a few hours and then drove home. This image was totally worth the effort (8 miles round trip - highest point I was at 6450 feet)!

History

Portland Bill and Chesil Beach are the graveyards of many vessels that failed to reach Weymouth or Portland Roads. The Portland Race is caused by the meeting of the tides between the Bill and the Shambles sandbank about 3 miles SE. Strong currents break the sea so fiercely that from the shore a continuous disturbance can be seen. Portland Bill Lighthouse guides vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth through these hazardous waters as well as acting as a waymark for ships navigating the English Channel. The Shambles sandbank is marked by a red sector light.

As early as 1669 Sir John Clayton was granted a patent to erect a lighthouse, but his scheme fell through and it was not until early in the eighteenth century that Captain William Holman, supported by the shipowners and Corporation of Weymouth, put a petition to Trinity House for the building of a lighthouse at Portland Bill. Trinity House opposed it suggesting that lights at this point were needless and shipowners could not bear the burden of their upkeep. The people of Weymouth continued their petition and on 26th May, 1716 Trinity House obtained a patent from George I. They in turn issued a lease for 61 years to a private consortium who built two lighthouses with enclosed lanterns and coal fires. The lights were badly kept, sometimes not lit at all, and in 1752 an inspection was made by two members of the Board of Trinity House who approached by sea to find "it was nigh two hours after sunset before any light appeared in either of the lighthouses". With the termination of the lease the lights reverted to Trinity House. In 1789 William Johns, a builder of Weymouth under contract to Trinity House, took down one of the towers and erected a new one at a cost of £2,000. It was sited so that it served as a mark by day or night to direct ships moving up and down Channel or into Portland Roads clear of the Race and Shambles. Over the doorway on a marble tablet was the following inscription:-

In August 1788 Argand lamps were installed, Portland being the first lighthouse in England to be fitted with them. In the upper or old house there were two rows, seven in each row, lighted with oil and furnished with highly-polished reflectors. Low light tests were made by Thomas Rogers with his new lens light, and six Argand lamps were installed, their lights increased by lenses.

In 1798, when Napoleon threatened invasion, two 18lb cannons were installed at the lighthouse.

A 7 metre tall white stone obelisk was built in 1844 at the Southern tip of Portland Bill as a warning of a low shelf of rock extending 30 metres South into the sea, which still stands near the current lighthouse.

New high and low lighthouses were built in 1869, but early last century Trinity House announced its intention of replacing them with a single tower - the present lighthouse. The old towers can still be seen from the outside - the low light, which is now a bird observatory and field centre, has retained its original appearance but the high light lantern has been removed.

The present optic at Portland Bill is very unusual as due to the arrangement of the panels the character gradually changes from one flash to four flashes between the bearings 221°and 224° and from four flashes to one flash between bearings 117° and 141°.

Portland Bill Lighthouse was demanned on 18th March 1996 when monitoring and control of the station was transferred to the Trinity House Operations & Planning Centre at Harwich.

Portland Bill Lighthouse is located on the Southerly tip of the Isle of Portland, 1.2 miles south of the village of Easton.

Visitor Centre

For nearly 300 years a lighthouse has stood on Portland Bill to guide vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth and acting as a waymark for vessels navigating in the English Channel. A red sector light warns mariners of the hazardous Shambles Bank lying three miles offshore.

The ‘Lighthouse Visitor centre’ at Portland Bill is owned and operated independently from the actual tower lighthouse therefore there are occasions that the tower lighthouse would be closed to the public, whereas the ‘Lighthouse Visitor Centre’ would remain open. Further details on the 'Lighthouse Visitor Centre' opening times can be found here.

Tours of Portland Bill Lighthouse are organised by The Crown Estate under licence from the Corporation of Trinity House.

Last Tour at 16.30. Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

U2 - No Line On The Horizon Live in Dublin

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Reflejo de Luarca - Asturias //

Situación: El municipio de Valdés se encuentra ubicado en la costa occidental de Asturias. Su gran riqueza y diversidad natural se ve sintetizada en su eslogan turístico: La mar, el río y la montaña. La mar esculpe uno de los paisajes marinos más bellos del Principado; sus acantilados da paso a un sinfín de playas y de magnificas ensenadas como la del río Esva. Valles de extraordinaria belleza como el de Paredes, Muñas o sierras montañosas como Las Palancas, Estoupo o Belén de la Montaña.

Luarca, capital del concejo, es la villa Blanca de la Costa Verde. Luarca es una hermosa villa marinera que desde antaño ha tenido una intensa actividad comercial y pesquera entorno a la ballena. Son tipicos los barrios de pescadores como la Pescadería o el Cambaral donde se encuentra la Mesa de Mareantes.

Monumentos: Dentro de su arquitectura religiosa tenemos la iglesia parroquial de Santa Eulalia, situada en las proximidades del puerto En su lado norte se levanta un antiguo crucero de piedra, con las representaciones del Cristo Crucificado y Nuestra Señora del Niño. En la Villa se encuentra La ermita de la Virgen de la Blanca o de la Atalaya. Conserva en el ático una figura de la Virgen con el Niño del siglo XIV. En Trevías encontramos la iglesia de San Miguel guarda en su interior una bonita imagen de la Virgen de la Esperanza. Otras edificaciones religiosas importantes del concejo son: La iglesia parroquial de San Salvador de Barcia que data del siglo XIII. Nuestra Señora, en Méras de finales del XVII. San Pedro en Cadavedo, San Juan en Muñas de Arriba, y la de San Miguel en Canero, terminada en 1800 y que guarda rasgos decorativos barrocos. Su arquitectura civil y popular también es numerosa, pudiendo contemplar en el centro de la Villa, el Palacio y capilla del Marqués de Ferrera acogiendo en su interior la sala museo Jesús Villa Pastur, y un aula dedicada al paleolítico. La casa-palacio de los Gamoneda, del siglo XVIII, destacando su fachada, en Villademoros encontramos la torre del mismo nombre. Además de todas estas construcciones Valdés también nos deja grandes muestras del poder indiano, preferentemente en Villar y Barcelina, localidades próximas a la capital, entre las que podemos destacar Villa Barrera, Villa Argentina y Villa Teresa, en Villar, y Villa Rosario y Villa Excelsor en Barcelina.

Fiestas: El Rosario (15 de Agosto)

San Timoteo (22 de Agosto)

Multitud de celebraciones se suceden por todo el territorio Valdesano, sobre todo en la época estival, teniendo cada festejo una particularidad diferente. Así en la festividad de la Virgen del Rosario, tiene lugar una procesión marítima con posterior saleo con la imagen de la Virgen, tirándose posteriormente los jóvenes vestidos a la mar. Las fiestas de San Timoteo son una de las más concurridas del verano Astur, siendo el día 22 de Agosto su día grande, congregándose en el prau del patrón una infinidad de gentes asombrosa.

En la Vaqueirada de Aristébano, organizada conjuntamente con Tineo, tiene lugar una tradicional boda Vaqueira. También la celebración de La Regalina, tiene su nota característica, combinando bailes y cantos, realizados por las mozas solteras en honor de la patrona. Además de todos estos festejos, también son destacables en la Villa Blanca, los Carnavales y la Semana Santa, sin duda la más importante del Occidente Asturiano.

Costumbres: En relación con el Festival Vaqueiro y de la Vaqueirada, que tiene lugar el último domingo de julio en la localidad de Aristébano, se organiza una semana de actividades relacionada con la cultura vaqueira que mediante conferencias, exposiciones y publicaciones intenta dotar de contenido a los actos festivos del día de la vaqueirada, difundiendo los valores culturales y etnográficos de los antaño marginados vaqueiros de alzada.

Historia: Los datos más antiguos de la presencia humana en el Concejo de Valdés se remontan a las épocas prehistóricas, el yacimiento de Busto es hasta el momento presente, el sitio que ha dado los restos. También se han localizado restos industriales de estas mismas etapas en los sitios de Caroyas, Ribón, Paredes. También son numerosas las muestras artísticas que podemos encontrar en todo el concejo.

Valdés es un concejo asturiano que forma parte de la Comarca natural del Valle del Ese-Entrecabos, y es precisamente el río Ese o Esva el que le da nombre: Valdés es el Valle del río Es o Ese de los romanos, del que obtenían abundante oro para el imperio, pero la población de Valdés es tan antigua como la conquista de la tierra por los homínidos, ya que el yacimiento arqueológico del cabo Busto («Entre Cabos») (más o menos de la misma datación de Atapuerca

En la actualidad nos sigue cruzando de Sur a Norte el río Esva, con sus cada vez más codiciados salmones y peleonas truchas, aunque es el río Negro el que recorre la Villa, Luarca, capital del concejo, el que tiene más y más grandes, para disfrute de todos.

El territorio es un compendio de ríos, mar y montaña en un medio natural, eso nos permite tener unos productos de primerísima calidad: producimos la mejor leche gracias a nuestra cuidada cabaña lechera, pero nuestros pastos de media montaña también nos permiten producir una excelente carne. Los embutidos, el txosco y el butietxo.

De las mejores fabas de Asturias tenemos en nuestra gastronomía, la mejor fabada que se puede tomar.

¿Y del mar? los mejores mariscos son los de nuestras costas; son famosos los oricios y los percebes, junto con los centollos.

Pero Luarca merece una mención aparte, ya que resulta una villa urbanísticamente compensada a pesar de algunos desmanes del pasado, en la que los barrios de Pescadería y Cambaral ofrecen a la vista una apreciable homogeneidad urbanística. Luarca, que significa Txugar de Barcos en nuestro denostado idioma (aunque la denominan Txuarca los castizos), tuvo su origen en estos barrios, que junto con la Carril cierran la primera ciudad, posteriormente crecida con la Ley Cambó y sus edificios modernistas, eclécticos, etc.

El resto del concejo son poblaciones diseminadas en una extensión de 337 kilómetros cuadrados, en los que cabe destacar la naturaleza —Paisaje Protegido de Entrecabos de la Cuenca del Esva, Monumento Natural de las Hoces del Esva y Reserva Natural de la Playa de Barayo—, el tipismo de los arcos del pueblo de Brieves, Cadavedo, Trevías, lugar milenario y segunda población valdesana. Las parroquias de Paredes, Ayones y Arcallana merecen una visita sin prisas para poder observar los corzos, las nutrias, etc.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.
