• Dos Cabezas, AZ is a "living" Sonoran Desert ghost town with few remaining residents • located in the Sulphur Springs Valley [photo] of Cochise County • lies beside the Dos Cabezas ("Two Heads") mountain range, named for its twin bald summits

 

• an historically significant spring with potable water, once known as Dos Cabezas Spring, stands about a half mi. southwest of the town by the old Southern Emigrant Trail, a principal artery of the westward movement • the trail descends to the valley from Apache Spring through Apache Pass

 

• on 4 Sep 1851, John Russell Bartlett & his Boundary Survey Commission were heading west through what was, for over 300 yrs., Spanish/Mexican territory • most of the land had been ceded to the U.S. in 1848, ending the controversial Mexican-American War, but much of southernmost Arizona & New Mexico remained under the Mexican flag • Bartlett's mission was to work with a Mexican survey team to formally define the post-war US-Mexico border

• by 1858 a new, fortified stone depot, Ewell's Stage Station [photo] , rose 4 mi. south of Dos Cabezas Spring • it's unclear which stage line erected the building, but around the time of its completion Jackass Mail quit the route, Butterfield-Overland later decided to bypass "Ewell's" & by 1861 it lay in ruins, destroyed by Apaches

 

• the Ewell name lived on at a tiny, hardscrabble settlement called Ewell Springs & at Dos Cabezas Spring, renamed Ewell's Spring when the original station was built • by 1879 the National Mail & Transportation Co. had established a new Ewell's Station

 

• Virginia-born Richard Stoddert "Baldy" Ewell (1817-1872) was a Captain in the First U. S. Dragoons, stationed in the Southwest in the 1850s • he resigned from the U.S. Army in 1861 to join the Confederacy • served in the Civil War as senior commander under Stonewall Jackson & Robert E. Lee • it has been argued that his decisions at the Battle of Gettysburg may have decided the outcome of that engagement

• in 1878 John Casey (c. 1834-1904), an immigrant from Ireland, staked the first important claim in the Dos Cabezas area • the Juniper, locally known as the "Casey Gold," was located just ~2 miles NE of Ewell's Spring • John & his brother Dan moved into a cabin at the site • by the end of the year a dozen employees were working the mine

 

• the news that Casey had struck pay dirt & word that a Southern Pacific RR station would soon be built at Willcox – just 14 mi. away – lured scores of prospectors, e.g., Simon Hansen (1852-1929), a recent immigrant from Denmark who filed 27 claims • with the arrival of the new settlers, a small school was erected • on 20 Oct, 1878, the Dos Cabezas Mining District was officially designated

• amid the rapid growth of 1879, the Ewell Springs settlement gave way to Dos Cabezas, a town with its own post office located a bit uphill from Ewell • John Casey is generally considered its founder • Mississippi-born James Monroe Riggs (1835-1912), once a Lt. Col. in the Confederate Army, became Dos Cabezas' 1st postmaster & opened a store he named Traveler's Rest

 

• by 1880 the nascent town had ~30 adobe houses & 15 families • sixty-five voters were registered in 1882, the year the town's newspaper, the “Dos Cabezas Gold Note”, launched, then promptly closed • in 1884, 42 students enrolled in the town's school

 

• at its height, Dos Cabezas had ~50 buildings, 3 stores, 3 saloons, 2 dairies, carpenter shops, telegraphic facilities, a mercantile, barber shop, butcher, brewery, brickyard, hotel, dancehall, boarding house, blacksmith shop, 3 livery stables, 3 stamp mills for gold ore & about 300 residents though actually, the area's population was at least 1,500 counting prospectors, miners & other mining co. employees living in the nearby mountains & valleys —Books in Northport

 

• Dos Cabezas ("Two Heads") was often spelled & pronounced "Dos Cabezos" with an "o" replacing the 2nd "a" in "Cabezas" • the postmaster settled on both spellings, as seen in the town's postmarks • the English translation of Dos Cabezos is "Two Peaks," arguably a more accurate — if less poetic — description of the twin summits than the original • given that the erroneous version was only name registered at U.S. Post Office Department in Washington DC, the interchangeable spellings persisted well into the 20th c.

 

• in 1880 the railroad arrived in Arizona, a station was established at Willcox & a cranky Scotland-born miner, John Dare Emersley (1826-1899), arrived at Dos Cabezas to prospect for mineral deposits • J.D. was a grad of the U. of Edinburgh, a writer well-versed in science & a botanical collector with a drought-tolerant grass, muhlenbergia emersleyi (bull grass), named for him • was a correspondent for the Engineering & Mining Journal • several other magazines including Scientific American also published him

 

• according to a miner who knew him, Emersley was apparently a greedy – and unusually tall – claim jumper: "Every old settler in the Globe District remembers Emersley, a seven foot Scotchman who had more claims located than he could work, and jumped more than he could hold." -“Arizona Silver Belt” (Globe, AT), 06 Jan 1883

 

• the "Scotchman" soon found a gold deposit & staked about 20 claims • he built a cabin nearby at an elevation of ~6,000 ft., & lived a reclusive life • entered into a pact with God, vowing not to develop any of his claims unless he received a sign from above • nevertheless, the work legally required to retain title to his claims produced several tunnels, one, the Roberts, 160' long • the sign from God never materialized and while awaiting it, Emersley died of scurvy

 

• shortly thereafter “Starved Amid His Riches”, the story of J.D. Emersley, a religious recluse who lived & died on a "mountain of copper," appeared in newspapers throughout the country • Emersley willed his claims to the Lord to be used for the good of all mankind • though this final wish was never fulfilled, the "mountain of copper" story brought yet another wave of prospectors to the Mining District & sparked a local copper boom

 

• in 1899 a new town, Laub City, was being laid off at the mouth of Mascot Canyon, 2 mi. above Dos Cabezas • John A. Rockfellow (1858-1947) [photo], author of "The Log of an Arizona Trailblazer," performed the survey • Rockefeller's sister was Tucson architect Anne Graham Rockfellow (1866-1954), an MIT grad & designer of the landmark El Conquistador Hotel [photo]

 

• the townsite was near the Emersley claims, which had been acquired by Dos Cabezas Consolidated Mines • America's coast-to-coast electrification required countless miles of copper power lines, thus "copper camps" like Laub City proliferated & prospered • the town grew & by 1900 warranted its own post office

 

• Laub City was named for (and possibly by) Henry Laub (1858-1926), a Los Angeles investor born in Kentucky to German-Jewish immigrants • made his first fortune as a liquor merchandiser • later invested in mining, oil & Southeast Arizona real estate

• a worldwide surge in mining caused copper prices to fall as supply outstripped demand • several mining concerns colluded to restrict production in a failed attempt to stabilize the market • Consolidated Mines' financing subsequently dried up & by 1903 Laub City was a ghost town • Dos Cabezas also suffered from the mine closings but managed to hang on as some mines continued to operate

 

• in 1905 a Wales-born mining engineer, Capt. Benjamin W. Tibbey (1848-1935), arrived in town with a "Mr. Page" • Ben Tibbey's mining career began as a child in a Welch mine • Page was actually T.N. McCauley, a Chicagoan with a checkered career in investment & finance • the two surveyed the mining district • McCauley apparently remained, later claiming he had resided in Emersly's abandoned shack for 2 yrs. • he also quietly filed & acquired claims covering 600 acres

 

• in June, 1907 McCauley, organized the Mascot Copper Company with a capitalization of $10MM & began large scale development • euphoric reports of massive ore deposits appeared in the local press, e.g., "Many Thousands of Tons of Ore in Sight— Property Bids Fair to Become Arizona's Greatest Copper Producer"

 

• in 1909 Mascot acquired control of Dos Cabezas Consolidated Mines Co., the original Emersley claims that Laub's group had purchased • McCauley launched a campaign to sell Mascot stock at $3/share, later $4 & finally $5 • his extravagant promotions included investor & press junkets to the mine in private railroad cars, wining & dining at the property's Hospitality House & a lavish stockholders' banquet at the Fairmont Hotel In San Francisco, with the company logo, a swastika, prominently on display [photo]

• in 1914, the company launched the Mascot Townsite & Realty Co. to sell lots in a new town they were developing in Mascot Canyon:

 

"UNUSUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR PERSONAL PROFIT By the Purchase of a Lot In the MASCOT TOWNSITE This new town should have a population of 5000 within a few years." - May 1915

 

• by 1915 the town of Mascot had been established • homes accessed by winding paths rose one above another on terraces • residents pitched in to build a community hall in a single day • a band called the "Merry Miners" was organized to play at Saturday-night dances

 

"King Copper, the magic community builder, has once more raised his burnished scepter—and once more a tiny mining camp, a mere speck of Arizona landscape, has received the industrial stimulus which should shortly transform it into a factor to be reckoned with among the bustling little cities of the southwest… The tiny mining camp of the past was Dos Cabezas. • within 10 yrs. the town would boast ~100 buildings & a population of ~800 • its children were educated at Mascot School & a second school, with 4 teachers between them • many of the town's boys "grew up panning gold to earn money" —Arizona Republic, 04 Mar 1971

 

• though most of the area's Mexican residents lived in Dos Cabezas, a few, like Esperanza Montoya Padilla (1915-2003), resided in Mascot:

 

"I was born in Mascot, Arizona, on August 28, 1915… In the early days, when I was a young child, Mascot was very built up; it was blooming. It was also a beautiful place. There were a lot of Cottonwood and oak trees on the road going up towards the mine and streams coming down the mountain. The school was on that road along with a grocery store and even a pool hall. There was a confectionery in the pool hall where they sold goodies like ice cream and candy. There was a community center on the hill where they showed movies. I remember silent movies with Rudolph Valentino. Even the people from Dos Cabezas came up to Mascot for the movies.

 

At Christmas they put up a tree in the community center, and all the children in town would get their Christmas presents. There was a road coming up from Dos Cabezas to Mascot and all kinds of houses along that road all the way up to the mine. Our house was on that road. I remember a time when everything was caballos – horses pulling wagons. The cars came later of course. —Songs My Mother Sang to Me

 

• on January 27, 1915, a celebration in Willcox marked the beginning of construction of the Mascot & Western Railroad • a large crowd watched a jubilant T. N. McCauley turn the first shovelful of dirt • the final spike - a copper one - was driven 15 June, 1915 at The Mascot townsite, followed by a "monstrous barbecue" for 4,000 guests [photos] • activities included a tour of a mine and the company's "2-mile" (10,6000') aerial tramway [photo]

• in 1916 a drought ravaged the mining district — wells dried up, cattle died & many mines shut down • on 1 July 1917, American Smelting & Refining took out a 20 yr. lease on the Mascot property only to relinquish it less than a yr. later, presumably because the operation was losing money

 

• with Mascot Copper facing insolvency, McCauley reorganized it via merger • the "new" Central Copper Co. began operations 15 Feb 1919 • McCauley devised a multi-level marketing scheme where stockholders became stock salesmen • the price was set at $0.50/share, purchases limited to $100/person with $10/mo. financing available • the salesmen, using portable hand-cranked projectors, screened movies of the property at small gatherings of prospective buyers

 

• reportedly 70,000 stockholders invested & were stunned as the price dropped 50% when the stock hit the market • lawsuits were filed • in a display ad published in several newspapers, McCauley denied each charge against the company

 

• by Jan, 1924, McCauley reported $4,500,000 spent on new construction • by 1926 400 employees were on the payroll, but output of the mines proved marginal • in 1927 stockholders were informed that falling copper & silver prices dictated that ore extraction be reduced to the minimum necessary to cover operating expenses

 

• the following year the enterprise was taken over by Southwestern Securities Corporation, a holding company • by late 1929 the payroll was down to 26 employees • on February 29, 1932, Southwestern Securities purchased the Mascot Company at public auction for $100,000 • McCauley promptly moved to Tucson, was implicated in a bank scandal, fled to California then disappeared without a trace —“A history of Willcox, Arizona, and Environs”, Vernon Burdette Schultz

 

• with the failure of Central Copper [photo] & exodus of miners, Dos Cabezas began its final descent, although not devoid of diversions • in spite of frequent mine closings & the onset of the Great Depression, the town fielded a team in the Sulphur Springs Valley Baseball League, which also included a squad representing a C.C.C. camp • Willcox had 2 teams in the league, the Mexicans & the Americans

 

• among the dwindling Dos Cabezas population was Jack Howard, the man who "sharpened the first tools that opened up the first gold discoveries of Dos Cabezas district" & spent his last 30 yrs. with Mary Katherine Cummings, history's "Big Nose Kate" [photo], memorialized in movies as Katie Elder —“Tombstone Daily Prospector”

 

• John Jessie “Jack” Howard (1845-1930) was born in Nottingham, England • as one of the first miners in the Dos Cabezas mining district, he is memorialized by Howard Peak & Howard Canyon • lived in the hills near Dos Cabezas • remembered as a crusty churl who hid in a manhole behind his shack to fire at intruders as they rode into range • on the other hand, some of his fellow Dos Cabezans considered him friendly • divorced his wife Mary who, according to court records, "displayed a vile and disagreeable disposition coupled with frequent outbursts of the most violent temper until she made his life a burden he could stand no longer.”

• Mary Katherine "Big Nose Kate" Horony (1850-1940) was born in Pest, Hungary, 2nd oldest daughter of Hungarian physician Miklós Horony • emigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1860 • placed in a foster home after her parents died • stowed away on a steamboat to St. Louis, where she became a prostitute • in 1874 was fined for working as a "sporting woman" (prostitute) in a "sporting house" (brothel) in Dodge City, KS, run by Nellie "Bessie" Ketchum, wife of James Earp [video (8:59)]

 

• moved to Fort Griffin, TX in 1876 • met dentist John "Doc" Holliday, who allegedly said he considered Kate his intellectual equal • Kate introduced Holliday to Wyatt Earp • Doc opened a dental practice but spent most of his time gambling & drinking

 

• the couple fought regularly, sometimes violently • according to Kate they married in Valdosta, Georgia • moved on to AZ Territory where Kate worked as a prostitute at The Palace Saloon in Prescott • they parted ways but she rejoined Holliday in Tombstone [photos] • claimed to have witnessed the 26 Oct 1881 Gunfight at the O.K. Corral from her window at C.S. Fly's Boarding House

 

• 19 years later Kate, nearly 50 [photo] & divorced from an abusive husband, was long past her romance with Doc & too old for prostitution • in June 1900, while employed at the Rath Hotel [photo] in Cochise, AT, she answered a want ad for a housekeeper at $20/mo. plus room & board • the ad had been placed by Jack Howard • Kate lived with him as his employee ("servant" according to the 1900 census) until 1930

 

• on 3 January, Kate walked 3 mi. to the home of Dos Cabezas Postmaster Edwin White.

• Howard was buried in an unmarked grave in Dos Cabezas Cemetery • after living alone for 2 yrs. Kate sold the homestead for $535.30 • In 1931 she wrote Arizona Gov. George W.P. Hunt, requesting admission to the Arizona Pioneers Home at Prescott • although foreign born thus not eligible for admission, she claimed Davenport, Iowa as her birthplace & was accepted • she died 5 days shy of her 90th birthday • was buried under the name "Mary K. Honfleur is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy en.normandie-tourisme.fr/normandy-tourism-109-2.html in northwestern France. It is located on the southern bank of the estuary of the Seine across from le Havre and very close to the exit of the Pont de Normandie. Its inhabitants are called Honfleurais. It is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest church made out of wood in France. The first written record of Honfleur is a reference by Richard III, Duke of Normandy, in 1027. By the middle of the 12th century, the city represented a significant transit point for goods from Rouen to England. Located on the estuary of one of the principal rivers of France with a safe harbour and relatively rich hinterland, Honfleur profited from its strategic position from the start of the Hundred Years' War. The town's defences were strengthened by Charles V in order to protect the estuary of the Seine from attacks from the English. This was supported by the nearby port of Harfleur. However, Honfleur was taken and occupied by the English in 1357 and from 1419 to 1450. When under French control, raiding parties often set out from the port to ransack the English coasts, including partially destroying the town of Sandwich, in Kent, England, in the 1450s. At the end of the Hundred Years' War, Honfleur benefited from the boom in maritime trade until the end of the 18th century. Trade was disturbed during the wars of religion in the 16th century. The port saw the departure of a number of explorers, in particular in 1503 of Binot Paulmierde Gonneville to the coasts of Brazil. In 1506, local man Jean Denis departed for Newfoundland island and the mouth of the Saint Lawrence. An expedition in 1608, organised by Samuel de Champlain, founded the city of Quebec in modern day Canada. After 1608, Honfleur thrived on trade with Canada, the West Indies, the African coasts and the Azores. As a result, the town became one of the five principal ports for the slave trade in France. During this time the rapid growth of the town saw the demolition of its fortifications on the orders of Colbert. The wars of the French revolution and the First Empire, and in particular the continental blockade, caused the ruin of Honfleur. It only partially recovered during the 19th century with the trading of wood from northern Europe. Trade was however limited by the silting up of the entrance to the port and development of the modern port at Le Havre. The port however still functions today. The New Forest heathlands are the most characteristic habitat of the Forest and are some of the most important lowland sites for nature study in Europe. Indeed, there aren't many places left in Britain and Europe that can boast such expanses of untouched heath.

  

These heathlands have changed little over time but were once covered in dense forest, as was much of the British Isles.

It was the area's inhabitants of the Bronze Age that cleared these forests, opening up large areas for basic agricultural use. However, the sandy, acidic soils were largely infertile and unsuitable for any serious use - the primary factor in ensuring the survival of the New Forest heathlands through the centuries.

In present times, animal grazing helps maintain the heathlands, while in winter controlled burning by the Forestry Commission promotes new springtime growth of grass and prevents the scrub from completely taking over.

The biggest areas of heathland occupy the western half of the New Forest and count for around half of the area of the Open Forest.

The heathlands are fairly uniform in appearance - almost completely covered in heather (bell heather and ling) with a good scattering of gorse bushes and bracken. The heather flowers in summer, bringing the normally dull-brown heathlands to life with shades of purple and pink. At this time, the bracken is also at its greenest, while the yellow flowers of the gorse have all but disappeared, having bloomed a couple of months earlier.

  

The heathlands of the New Forest are criss-crossed by sandy tracks, and low-lying areas play host to another of the Forest habitats, the bogs.

  

New Forest heathland wildlife

 

The low, dense covering of the heather and scrub provides a good home for many different species of insects and invertebrates. In turn, this attracts a healthy diversity of animal and birdlife and the heathlands are home to several of Britain's rarest species.

Notably, the sand lizard and smooth snake (shown below) are both protected species that survive in select areas of the New Forest heaths, while the rare Dartford Warbler is now a permanent resident in amongst the gorse.

  

Ground nesting birds, such as nightjar and skylarks, are also to be found on some of the New Forest heathlands. In fact, about one quarter of New Forest birds nest in this habitat.

Between March 1st and July 31st great care must be taken while walking on any of the heaths - always walk on the paths! Indeed, the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000) is in force on certain parts of the Forest, and dog walkers especially must take note; dogs must be kept on a short lead during this period.

Numerous warning notices are put up at this time of year, all around the heathlands where nests may be.

For visitors to the New Forest National Park, the question "But where's the forest?" may well be justified when viewing such large open tracts of land, but the New Forest heathlands are as characteristic of the area as the mighty oak and beech trees are, and must be accepted as a major part of the Forest!

"This sculpture is meant to evoke the power of the Brisbane River sweeping around this curve at new Farm, triggering memories of the massive floods of 1893 and 1974, and anxieties about the next. The word flood appears in thick solid letters, styled in a san serif font, with only the top third showing, like a headline literally going under. The title Watermark means both a mark showing the height to which water has risen, and a design impressed into paper which is visible when held to the light, guaranteeing authenticity.Giving weight to words, and seeing letters as sculptural forms, mirrors the ways we make thought concrete. Our words become shapes which reflect the energies we speak, and the ideas and passions which they contain."

"When I was commissioned to make Watermark in 2000, I was told that there would never be another flood in Brisbane, thanks to the Wivenhoe Dam. Unfortunately history repeated in January 2011, and remarkably the sculpture became the literal watermark showing the final height of the flood a couple of centimeters above its ground level.

 

Each letter is self-contained, made of plate steel which has been welded into an airtight form to prevent internal rust.

 

My advice to public sculptors is to stay closely involved in every stage and watch every detail of manufacture. Without my permission the sculpture was set 5cm into the cement, with a small angled lip on its edges. If I'd been made aware of this, I would have made each letter 5cm higher to compensate. The maximum letter height of 180cm on the 'F' makes the sculpture a tempting climb for children - high enough to be interesting, but not so high that parents having coffee at the nearby cafe are worried.

 

Watermark has a fifty year contract, whereby the sculptor guarantees a sufficiently robust technical build and Brisbane City Council guarantees care and maintenance. I am glad that the sculpture has become an integral part of its public domain and feels like it belongs to the city."

Reflejo de Luarca - Asturias //

Situación: El municipio de Valdés se encuentra ubicado en la costa occidental de Asturias. Su gran riqueza y diversidad natural se ve sintetizada en su eslogan turístico: La mar, el río y la montaña. La mar esculpe uno de los paisajes marinos más bellos del Principado; sus acantilados da paso a un sinfín de playas y de magnificas ensenadas como la del río Esva. Valles de extraordinaria belleza como el de Paredes, Muñas o sierras montañosas como Las Palancas, Estoupo o Belén de la Montaña.

 

Luarca, capital del concejo, es la villa Blanca de la Costa Verde. Luarca es una hermosa villa marinera que desde antaño ha tenido una intensa actividad comercial y pesquera entorno a la ballena. Son tipicos los barrios de pescadores como la Pescadería o el Cambaral donde se encuentra la Mesa de Mareantes.

 

Monumentos: Dentro de su arquitectura religiosa tenemos la iglesia parroquial de Santa Eulalia, situada en las proximidades del puerto En su lado norte se levanta un antiguo crucero de piedra, con las representaciones del Cristo Crucificado y Nuestra Señora del Niño. En la Villa se encuentra La ermita de la Virgen de la Blanca o de la Atalaya. Conserva en el ático una figura de la Virgen con el Niño del siglo XIV. En Trevías encontramos la iglesia de San Miguel guarda en su interior una bonita imagen de la Virgen de la Esperanza. Otras edificaciones religiosas importantes del concejo son: La iglesia parroquial de San Salvador de Barcia que data del siglo XIII. Nuestra Señora, en Méras de finales del XVII. San Pedro en Cadavedo, San Juan en Muñas de Arriba, y la de San Miguel en Canero, terminada en 1800 y que guarda rasgos decorativos barrocos. Su arquitectura civil y popular también es numerosa, pudiendo contemplar en el centro de la Villa, el Palacio y capilla del Marqués de Ferrera acogiendo en su interior la sala museo Jesús Villa Pastur, y un aula dedicada al paleolítico. La casa-palacio de los Gamoneda, del siglo XVIII, destacando su fachada, en Villademoros encontramos la torre del mismo nombre. Además de todas estas construcciones Valdés también nos deja grandes muestras del poder indiano, preferentemente en Villar y Barcelina, localidades próximas a la capital, entre las que podemos destacar Villa Barrera, Villa Argentina y Villa Teresa, en Villar, y Villa Rosario y Villa Excelsor en Barcelina.

 

Fiestas: El Rosario (15 de Agosto)

San Timoteo (22 de Agosto)

 

Multitud de celebraciones se suceden por todo el territorio Valdesano, sobre todo en la época estival, teniendo cada festejo una particularidad diferente. Así en la festividad de la Virgen del Rosario, tiene lugar una procesión marítima con posterior saleo con la imagen de la Virgen, tirándose posteriormente los jóvenes vestidos a la mar. Las fiestas de San Timoteo son una de las más concurridas del verano Astur, siendo el día 22 de Agosto su día grande, congregándose en el prau del patrón una infinidad de gentes asombrosa.

 

En la Vaqueirada de Aristébano, organizada conjuntamente con Tineo, tiene lugar una tradicional boda Vaqueira. También la celebración de La Regalina, tiene su nota característica, combinando bailes y cantos, realizados por las mozas solteras en honor de la patrona. Además de todos estos festejos, también son destacables en la Villa Blanca, los Carnavales y la Semana Santa, sin duda la más importante del Occidente Asturiano.

Costumbres: En relación con el Festival Vaqueiro y de la Vaqueirada, que tiene lugar el último domingo de julio en la localidad de Aristébano, se organiza una semana de actividades relacionada con la cultura vaqueira que mediante conferencias, exposiciones y publicaciones intenta dotar de contenido a los actos festivos del día de la vaqueirada, difundiendo los valores culturales y etnográficos de los antaño marginados vaqueiros de alzada.

Historia: Los datos más antiguos de la presencia humana en el Concejo de Valdés se remontan a las épocas prehistóricas, el yacimiento de Busto es hasta el momento presente, el sitio que ha dado los restos. También se han localizado restos industriales de estas mismas etapas en los sitios de Caroyas, Ribón, Paredes. También son numerosas las muestras artísticas que podemos encontrar en todo el concejo.

 

Valdés es un concejo asturiano que forma parte de la Comarca natural del Valle del Ese-Entrecabos, y es precisamente el río Ese o Esva el que le da nombre: Valdés es el Valle del río Es o Ese de los romanos, del que obtenían abundante oro para el imperio, pero la población de Valdés es tan antigua como la conquista de la tierra por los homínidos, ya que el yacimiento arqueológico del cabo Busto («Entre Cabos») (más o menos de la misma datación de Atapuerca

 

En la actualidad nos sigue cruzando de Sur a Norte el río Esva, con sus cada vez más codiciados salmones y peleonas truchas, aunque es el río Negro el que recorre la Villa, Luarca, capital del concejo, el que tiene más y más grandes, para disfrute de todos.

 

El territorio es un compendio de ríos, mar y montaña en un medio natural, eso nos permite tener unos productos de primerísima calidad: producimos la mejor leche gracias a nuestra cuidada cabaña lechera, pero nuestros pastos de media montaña también nos permiten producir una excelente carne. Los embutidos, el txosco y el butietxo.

 

De las mejores fabas de Asturias tenemos en nuestra gastronomía, la mejor fabada que se puede tomar.

 

¿Y del mar? los mejores mariscos son los de nuestras costas; son famosos los oricios y los percebes, junto con los centollos.

 

Pero Luarca merece una mención aparte, ya que resulta una villa urbanísticamente compensada a pesar de algunos desmanes del pasado, en la que los barrios de Pescadería y Cambaral ofrecen a la vista una apreciable homogeneidad urbanística. Luarca, que significa Txugar de Barcos en nuestro denostado idioma (aunque la denominan Txuarca los castizos), tuvo su origen en estos barrios, que junto con la Carril cierran la primera ciudad, posteriormente crecida con la Ley Cambó y sus edificios modernistas, eclécticos, etc.

 

El resto del concejo son poblaciones diseminadas en una extensión de 337 kilómetros cuadrados, en los que cabe destacar la naturaleza —Paisaje Protegido de Entrecabos de la Cuenca del Esva, Monumento Natural de las Hoces del Esva y Reserva Natural de la Playa de Barayo—, el tipismo de los arcos del pueblo de Brieves, Cadavedo, Trevías, lugar milenario y segunda población valdesana. Las parroquias de Paredes, Ayones y Arcallana merecen una visita sin prisas para poder observar los corzos, las nutrias, etc.

The birds are quiet, hardly a peep. The large Harvest Moon that was forecast is buried in gray slurry, in subtle shades of silver and pewter. A fine mist wraps its cloak over the soft green landscape. Long Island rests in the middle of Willapa Bay. Here awaits a late summer dreamscape.

 

Like the September full moon, leaves are turning yellow and umber. Among the 16 people gathered at the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, the mood is speculative but optimistic. I came from Naselle, crossed the Naselle Bridge in a flurry, and headed south.

 

West of the bridge I could just make out the Herrolds’ oyster plant, their weather-worn dock and graceful wooden vessel. Gargantuan piles of oyster shells lay mounded on the shoreline. The two brothers are descendants of the Chinook culture and proud of it. They have worked this bay for oysters since childhood. The two families have protected both these pristine waters and a lifestyle that predates these oystermen.

 

Glenn Lamb is the executive director of the Columbia Land Trust. He and his staff have performed diligently in the Pacific Northwest. They have, in particular, a deep affection for Pacific County and the Long Beach Peninsula.

 

“It is all about wildlife, about restoring habitat,” he says. Lamb picks his words carefully. He is a careful and amicable man.

 

The organization outlines its parameters as, “Two states. One iconic river (the Columbia). 13,000 square miles of wonder.” Set in our backyard, the Columbia Land Trust projects hope with this succinct statement: “We conserve the Northwest you love.”

 

We are heading to the Don Bonker Cedar Grove, a 5,000-year-old copse of mostly ancient cedar trees on the west side of the island. U.S. Rep. Bonker saved that grove and then cemented public ownership of the entire island in the 1980s. In the grove are 274 acres of old-growth. The island is seven miles long and half as thick. In all of Pacific County, only 1 percent of the tall trees remain. Someday, as second-growth matures, the entire island will again rebound with a cornucopia of old-growth. This is Bonker’s gift to our grandchildren, to future generations.

 

Two capable assistants anchor our large barge-like craft at Smoky Hollow, and we make our way on an easy trail a half-mile to a trailhead that reads, “Cedar Grove.” Traveling the trail from the old logging road into the center of the grove is a quick route. One ponders the third-growth woods along the way, small timber the loggers call “pecker poles.” Don’t give up hope: Yards ahead is one of the treasures of the Pacific Northwest. In his long, fruitful tenor in Congress, Bonker left a legacy for you and me to enjoy. Today, the great cedars call our names.

 

Western cedars are referred to as cathedral trees. Lightning often strikes the tree tops. The resulting twisted limbs often bear shapes like giant candelabras. In this ancient copse, we are surrounded by massive and tall cedars. These trees preserve a quiet dignity. Perhaps, they project an elder’s wisdom, for they are old, very old, some 1,100 years. The landscape is like a natural church, but festooned with lichen, fern and a variety of mosses.

 

We stroll up the forested apse, a trail carved out by awestruck pilgrims who have ventured into this magical place since the advent of the Chinook civilization.

 

“Inspire love of place” — it doesn’t take much effort here. To see is to believe. The grove is much older than the trees in it. Like pilgrims coming to Mecca, we, the happy 16, have the rare privilege of standing amid this living and breathing antiquity.

 

The trip is short and fruitful. We traipse back to the scow and soon travel back to the refuge. By boat or kayak, Long Island is accessible to bow hunters, biologists and campers. Over a dozen campsites punctuate the island. The island provides infinite opportunities for photographers, or for those just seeking solace. Willapa Bay rolls through four tides a day. The Willapa was called Shoalwater Bay at the turn of the century. The shallow bay sustains that reputation. It also produces about 20 percent of the nation’s oysters. Those piles of bivalves are razor sharp. All that is to say: Beware of low tide, your unprotected hands, and the boat’s bottom.

"Long Island cedars are living fossils"

WILLAPA BAY — The term “living fossil” is one that mixes a sense of being out of place with one of awe and mystery. The coelacanth, a fish that lived alongside dinosaurs, was believed extinct until a living one was found in 1938. Another such living fossil is right around the corner, on Long Island.

 

That six-mile long island nestled in Willapa Bay is like stepping into the past. The 5,500-acre island includes 274 acres covered in cedar trees that were around when Constantinople became Istanbul in 1453. And unlike other forests, which are constantly in a state of flux due to development, fire or storms, this primeval grove has been untouched for thousands of years.

 

According to a 1985 article written in Washington Magazine by current Daily News editor Andre Stepankowsky, the first trees of the Long Island grove began sprouting about 4,000 years ago. While those first trees have not survived to this day, the average tree is still between 150 and 160 feet in height, with the oldest individual trees being roughly 1,000 years old. Old rotting cedars on the ground may have been sprouting when Julius Caesar was a child.

 

When studying forests, most of the discussion is about old-growth forests. The definition of this term varies depending on region, but in the Pacific Northwest, a forest reaches old-growth status when the majority of trees are more than 250 years old.

 

Old-growth forests already constitute a small fraction of all woodland in the area, but the Long Island grove is old enough to earn itself an entirely different distinction. These trees make up a “climax forest,” a steady-state system of self-reproducing trees so rare that before this grove was found, some researchers believed there were none still in existence. Usually, fire or windstorms interrupt the evolution of a forest to its final “climax” condition. But not at Long Island.

An aid in research

 

This well-preserved forest has allowed scientists to step into a snapshot of the ecosystem that once dominated coastal regions. Researchers from groups like the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Washington have used their rings to gain insight to the history of the area. A 1997 project, headed by David Yamaguchi and Brian Atwater, dated cedar stumps along the coast to 1699, which led them to believe a massive disaster occurred before spring of 1700, the same year that a massive tsunami hit Japan. In their report, researchers concluded, largely through comparative tree dating, that 1700 was the year of the last major earthquake in the region.

 

But the grove’s survival even through disaster is no mere stroke of luck; the trees were perfectly placed to avoid what felled similar groves around the region.

 

Long Island is tucked into Willapa Bay, with the Long Beach Peninsula shielding it from the worst winds off the Pacific, while the frequent fog and rain keep fire risk to a minimum. Additionally, its position on an island makes it very unlikely that wildfires started elsewhere will spread to the grove.

 

The location also spared the grove from heavy logging. While Weyerhaeuser Co. acquired the lands for logging from Northern Pacific Railroad in 1900, the cedar grove survived because its location inland on the south portion of Long Island was far more distant to the places where logs were rafted into Willapa Bay and, from there, to shore.

Weyco-federal pact

 

Weyerhaeuser began to log the grove in the early 1970s, but its moves were met with protests. The company ultimately agreed to a deal with the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the ancient cedars.

 

The pact originally required the government to pay Weyerhaeuser each year, and the cost was being met with growing resistance by the mid-1980s. Southwest Washington Congressman Don Bonker stepped in to broker a lasting deal in which the federal government purchased Weyerhaeuser’s timber rights and preserved the grove in 1986.

 

Today, the Long Island cedar grove is open to the public, but getting there is a challenge. There are no bridges or ferries to Long Island. Anyone who wants to visit needs to find their own transportation. Visitors to Long Island who arrive from the southeast are met with signs for the Don Bonker Cedar Grove Trail.

 

Bonker was also instrumental in the creation of the Mount St. Helens Volcanic National Volcanic Monument, the Columbia River National Scenic Area and Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, as well as many state parks and refuges he expanded.

 

In a 2005 interview with The Daily Astorian, he called the purchase of the cedar grove “special... a rare moment” among the many accomplishments in his legacy. It was preserving these special places, he said, that always meant the most to him.

The four women in charge of the effort to build and test the 212-foot-tall rocket stage that will enable NASA's first Artemis mission to the Moon watch as the first completed core stage for NASA's Space Launch System Program rolls out from the agency's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans on Jan. 8, 2020. NASA is working to land the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024. SLS is part of NASA’s backbone for deep space exploration, along with Orion and the Gateway in orbit around the Moon. SLS will be the most powerful rocket in the world and will send astronauts in the Orion spacecraft farther into space than ever before. No other rocket is capable of carrying astronauts in Orion around the Moon.

Introduction to Cemlyn

  

Cemlyn is one of North Wales Wildlife Trust’s star reserves and regarded by the Anglesey County Council as the “jewel in the crown” of its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It is valued both for its scenic qualities and its unique range of wildlife, and is as popular with general visitors – local people, holidaymakers, walkers etc. as it is with birdwatchers and naturalists.

 

Situated on the North coast of Anglesey, about three miles West of Cemaes, the reserve land, which is owned by the National Trust and has been leased by NWWT since 1971, includes a large lagoon, separated from the sea by a spectacular, naturally-created shingle ridge.

 

The ridge, known as Esgair Gemlyn, is formed by the process of longshore drift, its profile changing with the action of tide and weather. This unique geographical feature also provides a habitat for interesting coastal plants such as Sea Kale, Sea Campion, and Yellow Horned Poppy.

 

In the summer, the lagoon is the backdrop for Cemlyn’s most famous wildlife spectacle. Clustered on islands in the brackish water is a large and internationally important seabird colony, including breeding Common and Arctic Terns, and one of the U.K.’s largest nesting populations of Sandwich Terns. From the vantage point of the tern viewing area on the ridge, visitors experience these rare and elegant birds close-up – chasing and diving in courtship displays; incubating eggs; preening and bathing in the lagoon, or calling to their hungry chicks as they come winging in with freshly-caught fish.

 

Around the reserve there are also areas of coastal grassland, farmland, scrub, wetland, and both rocky and sandy shore encircling Cemlyn Bay. These are home to a wealth of life - birds, mammals, insects, wildflowers and marine creatures which, together with the tern colony, make up a fascinating ecosystem: an ideal ‘outdoor classroom’ for studying biodiversity.

In addition to being a Wildlife Trust reserve, Cemlyn is a Special Protection Area, a candidate Special Area of Conservation, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is also part of the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

History of the reserve

  

Much of Cemlyn’s history as a wildlife site is tied to the story of Captain Vivian Hewitt, who came to the area in the 1930s, settling in Bryn Aber, the large house that dominates the western end of the reserve, and buying up much of the surrounding land.

A wealthy eccentric, his interest in birds led him to construct the first dam and weir at Cemlyn, replacing tidal saltmarsh with a large and permanent lagoon which he intended as a refuge for wildfowl. He also had a scheme to nurture an area of woodland within the grounds of Bryn Aber, to attract smaller birds. To this end he began construction of an imposing double wall, which was intended both as a wind-brake for the trees, and a means for observing the birds – the gap between the two walls had viewing holes. A further plan to top the walls with polished stone was never completed, and after Captain Hewitt’s death the house was left to his housekeeper’s family, but the walls themselves remain, and lend the site its mysterious, even foreboding presence.

It is the legacy of the lagoon that has had most significance for wildlife however. The change from a tidal habitat that frequently dried out in summer, to a stable body of water encompassing small islands, has provided the terns with nesting sites that are less attractive to ground predators. Over the following decades, various changes have occurred to the lagoon – some natural, eg. storms breaking over and swamping – some man-made, eg. the reconstruction of the weir and the creation or removal of islands. The water level and salinity of the lagoon is now monitored to maintain the ideal habitat for terns and other wildlife.

A couple of years after Captain Hewitt died, the Cemlyn estate was bought by the National Trust. Since 1971, they have leased the land around the lagoon to the North Wales Wildlife Trust, who manage it as a nature reserve. The two organisations work in partnership to enhance and maintain the site for wildlife and the public.

The reserve has had a warden every summer since 1981, with two wardens being employed every season since 1997. With the help of numerous volunteers, their work has included the detailed monitoring of the tern’s breeding success, protection of the colonies from a variety of natural predators (and in a couple of cases from the unwanted attentions of egg-collectors), as well as recording other forms of wildlife, and providing information to the public. Their presence on the ridge and around the reserve helps maintain the profile of Cemlyn as an important and nationally valuable site.

Terns

  

Three species of tern breed regularly at Cemlyn. The numbers of Sandwich Tern nesting on the islands in the lagoon have been going up in recent years, making the colony one of the largest in the country.

There were over 1000 nests in 2005, and a good percentage of chicks fledged. The Sandwich Terns generally nest in dense groups, and seem to benefit from being close to groups of nesting Black-headed Gulls, which react aggressively to the threat of a predator, while the Sandwich Terns sit tight. Common Terns nest in sparser groups and smaller numbers on the islands, as do the very similar Arctic Terns, which make an epic journey from the southern to the northern hemisphere and back every year - the longest migration of any bird.

One of Britain's rarest seabirds, the Roseate Tern was a former breeder at Cemlyn, and is still sometimes seen on passage, as are other rarities like Little Tern and Black Tern. A vagrant Sooty Tern caused great excitement when it visited the colony in the summer of 2005.

 

The tern colony is the main focus of conservation work at Cemlyn. Because of disturbance at their traditional breeding areas, due to increased coastal access and development, terns have declined historically in Britain, so sites like Cemlyn, which still hold healthy populations, are a precious and nationally importance resource.

 

Two wardens are employed by NWWT every summer, to monitor and protect the terns. As well as dealing with disturbance and predation, they record the numbers of nests, the fledging success of chicks, and also the kinds of fish being brought in by their parents. Feeding studies are important because availability of fish, especially the terns ideal food, Sandeels, can be the key factor in a successful breeding season. The combined results of warming seas and commercial overfishing of Sandeels around Shetland for example, have had a disastrous effect on the productivity of Arctic Terns there.

 

All terns are migratory. Sandwich Terns are usually the first to be seen, in late March and April, with the bulk of breeding adults of all species arriving on site in May. June and July are the busiest months for the terns, and a good time to visit the reserve, the lagoon islands becoming a hive of activity.

By mid-August, the majority of chicks should have fledged, and be ready to join their parents on the journey south to their wintering areas - the coast of West Africa in the case of most Common and Sandwich Terns, even further south for Arctics.

Other Birds

  

Oystercatcher and Ringed Plover both breed on the reserve, making their nests in the shingle of the Esgair.

In such an exposed choice of site, both species rely on wonderful camouflage of eggs and chick. In response to a direct perceived threat however, adult Ringed Plovers may resort to the 'broken wing trick' - drawing the attention of a potential predator by feigning injury and leading it away from the nest. To protect these waders, as well as the tern colony, visitors are asked to avoid walking on the lagoon-side of the Esgair during the summer months.

 

Cemlyn's situation and range of habitats make it a haven for a range of birds at all times of the year. Coot, Little Grebe and Shelduck can usually be seen around the lagoon, and Stonechats are a regular feature of the surrounding areas of scrub.

A variety of waders such as Curlew, Dunlin, Golden Plover, and Redshank use the area, and Purple Sandpiper may be seen on the rocky shoreline.

Summer visitors to look out for include Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler, while Wigeon, Teal, Red-breasted Meganser and other widfowl may be present in significant numbers in Autumn and Winter.

Other migrants turn up from time to time, and over the years a variety of rarities have been spotted –

2005 sightings included, apart from the Sooty Tern, an American Golden Plover, a Terek Sandpiper and a Melodious Warbler. Any keen birdwatcher will want to scour the site for something unusual.

Other animals

  

Grey Seals can often be seen in the sea around Cemlyn, or hauled up on Craig yr Iwrch, the rocky island just off the Trwyn, and Harbour Porpoise sometimes feed close to the western end of Cemlyn Bay.

 

Brown Hares can be seen in or around the reserve, occasionally crossing the Esgair at dawn or dusk.

 

Weasels and Stoats both hunt the hedgerows and grassland at Cemlyn, and during the summer, basking Adders and Common Lizards may be spotted.

 

There’s also a wide range of insect life – butterflies, such as Grayling, Wall Brown and Common Blue, and day-flying moths like the Six-spot Burnet can all be seen, as can various beetles, grasshoppers and dragonflies.

Underwater Life

  

The coastline of Cemlyn includes areas of shingle, sand and exposed rocky shore. These provide habitats for a variety of marine life including sea-anemones, crabs, prawns, blennies, butterfish, winkles, whelks, limpets, coastal lichens and a range of seaweeds. e.g. kelp.

 

The lagoon, with its changing mixture of fresh and salt water is a challenging environment, but Grey Mullet and Eels thrive in the brackish conditions. In fact Cemlyn is one of the top sites for specialised saline lagoon wildlife including shrimps and molluscs, and waterplants like Tassel Pondweed.

Plantlife

  

The shingle of the Esgair is one of the harshest habitats imaginable for plants – arid because of the quick-draining pebbles, and exposed to wind, salt-spray, and the ravages of winter storms. Nevertheless it provides a home to specialists like the rare Sea Kale, whose deep roots and fleshy leaves enable it to survive close to the tide-line, and whose profuse white flowers give off a strong sweet smell.

Other characteristic coastal plants to look for along the ridge include Sea Campion, Sea Beet, and the striking Yellow Horned Poppy. Stands of Sea Purslane and Glasswort (Sea Asparagus) can be found at low tide close to the car park at Bryn Aber.

The grassland around Cemlyn is rich in wildflowers; an early spread of colour is provided by Spring Squill and Thrift which punctuate the grass with blues and pinks, while later blooming flowers along the Trwyn include Tormentil, Yellow Rattle, Knapweed and Centaury.

Cemlyn through the Seasons

  

Spring

 

Early signs of Spring may include the first Wheatears arriving on Trwyn Cemlyn, the first Manx Shearwaters weaving through the waves out to sea, or the first Sandwich Tern’s call in the Bay - these are all possible from March onwards. Later on, Spring colour on the grassland around the reserve is provided by Spring Squill and Thrift which stud the ground with blues and pinks, and the first sunny spells may tempt out Common Lizards or Adders to bask. By mid-May, a range of birdlife is becoming visible and audible around the reserve, including terns settling on the islands in the lagoon, Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler singing in the scrub and water-margins, Whimbrel foraging along the rocky shore, and other waders like Dunlin and Black-tailed Godwit on the beach or in the lagoon.

 

Summer

 

Summer sees activity on the lagoon islands reach fever pitch with the terns and Black-headed Gulls using every hour of daylight to bring food to fast-growing chicks. The sight, sound and smell of this bustling seabird metropolis make up a memorable Cemlyn experience. June and July is the time to see the stands of Sea Kale in full flower, and to spot Yellow Horned Poppy and Sea Campion along the Esgair - Oystercatcher and Ringed Plover are also nesting on the shingle during this period. On the Trwyn, look out for Tormentil and the deep pink flowers of Centaury, as well as the passing colours of butterflies like Small Heath and Common Blue.

Also look out for the red and green leaf-beetle Chrysolina polita on the Dwarf Willow along Trwyn Pencarreg.

  

Autumn

 

The tern chicks are usually fledged by mid-August, ready to start the long migration south to their wintering grounds on the coast of Africa, so by early Autumn, the islands seem strangely peaceful. Other wildlife moves in however – flocks of Golden Plover, along with other waders like Lapwing and Curlew can be seen. Big Autumn tides can uncover interesting marine life that usually remains hidden on the lower reaches of the shore, and rough weather at this time brings a range of seabirds passing close to Trwyn Cemlyn – Manx Shearwaters, Gannets, Kittiwakes and Guillemots.

 

Winter

 

The lagoon remains an important resource for birds throughout the Winter months – Little Grebe, Shoveler, and Shelduck can regularly be seen, along with the Coot and Wigeon that also graze on the surrounding fields. The Herons that fish the lagoon at Cemlyn through the year are sometimes joined by a Little Egret darting in the shallows for shrimps. Red-breasted Merganser and Great Crested Grebe can often be spotted either in the lagoon or out in the Bay, while on the rocky shore, a keen eye may pick out a Turnstone or Purple Sandpiper foraging close to the water’s edge.

Education & Outreach

  

The aim of the project is to raise awareness in local children about the importance of biodiversity and conservation by enabling them to explore the array of unique wildlife habitats on their local doorstep.

 

The project is designed to link in with National Curriculum topics covered in subjects including Science, Geography, History, English & RE, and provide a basis for ongoing work in the classroom. These different topics are often linked in with general environmental themes, in a conscious effort to encourage pupils to think about their relationship to their surroundings.

 

The activities include carrying out habitat surveys, where pupils record different species along a line of samples (as in an ecological transect), investigating the wildlife of the lagoon and shore using nets, and observing the tern colony through binoculars. Art-based exercises focus on perception of surroundings through the senses and encourage pupils to explore, using materials found on the beach to create their own 3D designs.

 

In some cases, the People and Wildlife Officers can visit schools to give illustrated talks and initiate written or interactive exercises in the classroom.

  

Outreach

 

The Coastal Nature Reserves project also involves general education, awareness-raising and outreach to the local community. Activities have been organised both on and off the reserve - there was a Cemlyn Creature Count in June 2010, and guided walks have also been arranged for the general public as well as for youth clubs and a daycentre group for people with learning difficulties. The project has been represented in The Anglesey Show and the Wylfa Community Fun Day. Illustrated talks have also been carried out for groups such as the Urdd, Scouts and for two branches of the University of the 3rd Age.

 

The People and Wildlife team aim to extend the range of this work, and are very keen to hear from any organisations or community groups interested in either on or off-site activities.

How to get involved

  

Anglesey’s coastline is famous for its stunning scenery and the fantastic array of wildlife it holds. North Wales Wildlife Trust has a number of ways you can get involved in helping to protect this resource and raise awareness about its importance. The emphasis is very much on getting people involved, interacting with and enjoying their local naturalheritage.

 

As a volunteer with the Coastal Nature Reserve Project, opportunities will vary depending on the reserve and time of year. There’s a rough guide (by location) to the possibilities below.

Cemlyn Nature Reserve

The season will commence with a volunteer open day in March. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the rest of the Cemlyn team, learn more about the work, the reserve and the wildlife you may encounter, with a guided walk and volunteer fact sheets also provided.

Visiting the reserve

  

Cemlyn is sign-posted from Tregele on the A5025 between Valley and Amlwch. Although the roads to the site are narrow, there are two car parks adjacent to the reserve (OS 1:50, 000 Sheet 114 and Explorer 262. Grid ref. SH329936 & SH336932).

 

The reserve is open throughout the year: admission is free.

 

Group visits are possible by appointment

  

Suggested walks around Cemlyn

  

These are a few popular routes around the reserve, focussing mainly on wildlife and landscape features.

  

Esgair Gemlyn

 

The shingle ridge at Cemlyn is accessible from the Beach car park at the eastern end of the reserve.

Although the distance along the ridge to the tern viewing area opposite the islands is only about 0.5 km, it's worth bearing in mind that during the summer months, visitors are asked to use only the seaward side of the ridge, and the shingle can make for arduous walking.

It’s a much shorter walk from the Bryn Aber car park on the western side of the lagoon, but beware – the causeway linking the car park and the ridge can flood an hour or more either side of high tide, so it’s worth checking the times to avoid getting stranded.

During the summer, daily tide-times may be chalked up close to the causeway by the wardens.

Outside of the tern breeding season, the lagoon-side of the ridge is open to the public, and its interesting habitat can be explored at closer range.

  

Trwyn Cemlyn

 

This little peninsula (Trwyn is Welsh for nose) makes a favourite short walk for local people. Accessible via the Bryn Aber car park, it comprises coastal grassland with small patches of gorse and heather, and a rocky shoreline allowing views out to The Skerries in the west, Wylfa to the east, and if there’s good visibility, sometimes the Isle of Man to the north.

It’s a good spot for spring wildflowers, and also for seeing seabirds, seals, and sometimes porpoises.

It also links up with the National Trust coastal footpath to the west.

  

Lagoon inlet

  

The narrow bridge at the western end of the lagoon, just before Bryn Aber, makes a good vantage point for the lagoon islands if the ridge is inaccessible. It also allows views over the freshwater inlet and the adjacent area of gorse and scrub known as Morfa. The road alongside the inlet that leads to the farm of Tyn Llan has no parking, but a walk down gives views of the reedy inlet margins and surrounding damp pasture, which sometimes harbour interesting birdlife.

  

Coastal footpath towards Hen Borth

 

.Cemlyn forms the eastern end of a stretch of wonderful coastal footpath, taking in rugged landscape characteristic of the north Anglesey coast.

From the stile at the ‘brow’ of Trwyn Cemlyn, the path leads off the reserve up past Craig yr Iwrch, an outlying rock favoured by seals, cormorants and roosting curlews, and along the cliffs, passing Tyn Llan farm on the left, to the bay of Hen Borth.

Keen walkers may wish to carry on following the coastline as far as Carmel Head or Ynys y Fydlyn, while others may wish to visit the small church of St Rhwydrus, returning through the gate by the farm and back past the lagoon inlet.

  

Coast towards Wylfa Head

 

Trwyn Pencarreg - the area of rocky outcrops, grassland and coastal heath to the east of the Beach car park at Cemlyn, is interesting for its plant communities, wildflowers and insects, and for its impressive views back across Cemlyn Bay. A circular walk is possible via the old mill at Felin Gafnan.

The National Trust has produced a booklet detailing several circular walks around, or starting from Cemlyn. It includes illustrated routes for all of the areas described above, and of walks that take you further afield.
