Hawaiian sunset peeping from the sea
Smiles and says, "Aloha" to his sweetheart Hawaii
The drowsy islands slumber one by one
Close their sleepy eyes say, "Goodnight" to the sun
No, it's my yellow calla lily beginning to flower - but NY feels like Hawaii today - hot and steamy. Thunderstorms will cool things off tonight.
Colorful tropical sunset seen from the south end of Kauai in the town of Kalaheo.

Star trails over the state of Hawaii as seen from the summit of Maunakea. The towns of Waimea and Waikoloa are the most prominent light sources in the foreground. Behind them is the silhouette of Haleakala. Beyond that under streaks of airliners flying over the island is the light dome from Honolulu nearly 200 miles away.
This is a 2-shot panorama created by using two cameras with identical lenses pointed in slightly different directions. The cameras were synced to take simultaneous 30 second exposures for about 2.5 hours.
It's difficult to get a sense of scale here, but the tree ferns are so large compared the the ferns I'm used to in Ohio, that I feel like I'm a tiny garden toad staring up at them.
Finding these endangered Stilts was one of our more difficult challenges on the Big Island of Hawaii. Talking to the locals and park rangers was helpful however they didn't give us much hope a lot of : you might see them, maybe here, only early in the morning once in awhile ....then we were approached by a young park ranger that asked what we were looking for, the long telephoto lenses always attract a little attention. When we told her the Stilts she said right here pointing at the shoreline at 4pm if there are no people around. So we walked over to the area and if the Stilts didn't fly right in at that moment to land ...saw us and departed....it happened in 5 seconds then they were gone. I could have cried! Ok.... we came back the next day at 3:30 and I asked anyone wandering around to step back and we could all watch them, it worked and here they are. We saw a family of 3 a male, female and a juvenile.
Less than 2000 of these endemic birds in the Hawaiian archipelago. An estimated 92% of the Hawaiian stilt population is on Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, with annual presence on Niihau, Molokai, and scarce on Hawaii.

Probably the most challenging photo I have taken in a long time! The Byodo-In Temple is nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains, so the sun only hits it in the morning to mid-afternoon, meaning to get any details and light I had to also contend with all the contrast challenges that come with that time of day. Add to that all the tourists who stop to take pictures (How dare they... ;)) and you've got yourself quite a challenge. This was done with 4 exposures, +/- 2 EV bracketing and merged HDR in Lightroom. Featured in: www.onlyinyourstate.com/hawaii/byodo-in-temple-hi/
