My Hawaiian Ken finally has a girlfriend (after dalliances with my brunette Marlo! hehe) It’s Hawaiian Barbie, the 1976 edition with the shiny hard ‘Mexico’ hands and her darker makeup. LOVE that deep brown lipstick and the velveteen flower in her hair and that windsurfer board with the red vinyl sail that she came with… she oddly is able to stand on it on her own with very little effort. She also has a HUGE head… much larger than all my other Steffie faced dolls’ heads (as this issue of course used the Steffie head mold) … even larger than my Tuesday Taylors’ heads! I’ve had Ken in the bright and beach-y ‘Shore Lines’ for a while as he suits it so well, so I’m thinking of changing Barbie into ‘Scuba-Do’s’ to coordinate with him. What do you think?

The Hawaiian Stilt is an endangered Hawaiian subspecies of the black-necked stilt. It differs from the North American stilt by having more black on its face and neck, and longer bill, tarsus, and tail.

OK, back to Kona waters and Leina Sato, my favorite free-diving dolphin lover.

The pier at Waikiki Beach is a great place to watch the sunset. It is less crowded on this part of the beach (as opposed to the beach near the hotels). I caught this shot during my visit to Honolulu not long ago.

Aloha once again, it is my pleasure to present to everyone a modern day Western Waste Industries and Waste Resources sister company, Pacific Waste and their brand new Diesel Peterbilt Amrep! For anyone not familiar with Western Waste Industries, they were founded by Kosti Shirvanian (owner of Pacific Waste, Aloha Waste and Waste Resources), in the early 1990's they were 1 of the top 5 largest Waste haulers in the U.S., they were Orange with a large White stripe down the middle of the body, they primarily bought Stagg and Amrep's on Peterbilt in SoCal and were bought out by U.S.A. Waste (Waste Management) in 1996.

Almost everyday in Hawaii I would drive past Pacific Waste's yard to see what trucks were on route. They have a fleet of (11) FL's along with I believe (4) Roll Off's Their FL's consist of (6) STS all of which are ex Waste Resources and still had WR on them, (1) AVI (3) New Way's and (1) brand new Amrep. Unfortunately to my knowledge all (6) STS and the AVI never left the yard along with (1) New Way (that was used once or twice). Both the AVI and few STS FL's were being worked on so hopefully someone can find a STS on route in Hawaii.

I had seen the Amrep a few times going to Waste Management's landfill a few times during the trip but never on route. Thankfully on my last weekday in Hawaii I finally found the Pacific Waste Peterbilt Amrep. This truck is beautiful and reminds me of Western Waste every time I look at it. I was informed by the scout truck driver that this shiny Diesel Peterbilt Amrep is currently the newest truck in Pacific Waste's fleet and had been used for less than 2 weeks. The Amrep sounded amazing and brought back memories of Western Waste.

A cool aspect of Pacific Waste is that over 3/4 of their dumpsters are plastic. Unfortunately I did not get a picture but I saw a couple times trough out the trip the scout trucks will stack 2 plastic dumpsters, bring them out to the street and leave them stacked with trash in them and the FL will pick up each one individually and then re-stack them for the scout trucks.

On a side note, while I was on my way to an event earlier in the week I saw a Blue and White Superior Sanitation ex LA AVI FL with the hopper still in LA colors. I did not have a camera at the moment and throughout the rest of the trip I looked for it but unfortunately never found it. Pacific Waste has 3 times the stops a Superior and to make things worse the Superior AVI was on recycle and I did not see many Superior recycle dumpsters. Amazing how there are 2 companies on Kona with a AVI.

Pacific Waste is the sister company of Waste Resources in California and Aloha Waste who are in Maui and as of 2016 Honolulu.

I also included a brief clip at the end of the Hawaiian Mongoose, the mascot from P.F.I. Rubbish. In case you missed P.F.I. Rubbish I strongly recommend watching the video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=--Xeaffzngw&t=38s

This is just one photo of the full photographic narrative of a wonderful few days in Hilo, Hawaii. Here, we explored the town, farmer’s markets, found our new favorite brewery (Ola), and of course, explored the awe-inspiring Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve pictured here.

What is a photographic narrative?

My definition: “A sequence of photos deliberately arranged to follow a character or set of characters over time”.

This is different from how I see the term used the majority of the time, in that it usually seems to refer to a collection of photos which, when displayed juxtaposed, demonstrate some theme or concept. To me, this is not a story. To me, a story must follow a character or set of characters, and must have a temporal dimension. And this is what I attempt to capture in my photographic narratives. When displayed in sequence, these photos allow the viewer to follow the events of a story as they unfold over time, almost like a collection of stills from a movie.

While in Hawaii a little bit ago, I took an awesome hike from Hawaii Kai, up to Mariner's Ridge - a nice stroll along a mountain ridge line which produced this Hawaiian dream-like scene. The hike was an easy one - and I highly recommend you check it out when there.

Aloha again! Here we have Superior Sanitation and their Peterbilt Heavy Duty Atlantic series McNeilus Front Loader that has a GVW of 70,000 pounds. Superior Sanitation works in the Kona area and has 2 commercial Front Loaders #107 and #108. Other than the tailgate sizes, both are identical trucks and I filmed one clip of #108 at 2:50.

At the end of the video I included a clip from an up close boat ride to an active volcano on the other side of the island.

Big thank you to the driver Galen and the helper!

Superior Sanitation also has a ex City of Los Angles AVI Front Loader that I searched for on multiple occasions. Unfortunately everyday I checked it was parked inside the yard, even on the morning before I left I checked and it was at the yard. Once I left and was on my way to the airport I saw the AVI on the road but had no time to turn around and get a video.
