The Hawaiian Goose, also known as the Nene, the World’s rarest goose, endemic to the Hawaiian Islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. Another photo from my trip to Llanelli Wildfowl and Wetlands centre. I was fortunate to glimpse these birds in their homeland on a previous trip to Hawaii 😊

The Hawaiian Goose evolved from the Canada Goose which probably arrived on Hawaii shortly after it was formed some 500,000 years ago.

The Hawaiian Goose is the World’s rarest Goose and although its numbers have fallen due to hunting and attack from predators, it was bred in captivity by Sir Peter Scott at WWT Slimbridge and reintroduced to Hawaii.

I just had to take a picture of the Aloha Tower landmark in Honolulu, Hawaii. It's such a beautiful sight!

Lava flowing into the ocean on the Big Island of Hawaii. Nikon D3 with Nikkor 400mm f/2.8.

My husband had a work trip to Honolulu...wow....of course I went!

I don't really care for the highrises of Honolulu but driving a few minutes away this is a breathtaking view!!

A feral goat foraging and traversing along the escarpment of Pu’u'ohulukai on the leeward coast of Oahu. This feral goat is not a true ibex, but is known colloquially as the Hawaiian ibex as well as Hawaiian feral goat and Spanish goat. Since introduced, they were kept by islanders for meat and milk, undergrowth clearance, and hunting. With remarkable adaptability, colonies of wild goats are present on remote or inaccessible terrain on all the main Hawaiian Islands. There is concern their grazing and trampling can inflict damage on native ecosystems and endemic flora so ibex populations are managed through hunting. Interestingly, goats have an extensive and significant presence in mythology and folklore with depictions ranging from heroic to demonic.

Pearl Harbor was was the site of the unprovoked aerial attack on the United States by Japan on December 7, 1941. Before the attack, many Americans were reluctant to become involved in the war in Europe. This all changed when the United States declared war on Japan, bringing the country into World War II.

Pearl Harbor was the most important American naval base in the Pacific and home to the US Pacific Fleet. In strategic terms, the Japanese attack failed. Most of the US fleet and aircraft carriers were not present at the time of the attack.

I thought this was an interesting fountain and grabbed a snap as I was walking by.

I recently spent a week in Hawaii. Birding wasn't my focus, but I did see LOTS of birds as I toured parks and gardens near Honolulu.

I was excited to see this Saffron Finch; they are vibrant yellow in color. A native to South America, it's believed they were introduced to Hawaii in the 1960s and have been comfortably at home ever since. I saw a couple of these at

Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park.

NOTE: If you'd like to see more birds and flora from Hawaii, I've created a dedicated album that contains several photos not in my Photostream.

The Big Island of Hawaii

Shot from across Hilo Bay, Mauna Kea located on the island of Hawaii. Standing 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the state of Hawaii and is often snow covered during the winter months. Much of this Volcanic mountain is under water; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall, making it the world's tallest mountain from base to summit, surpassing Mount Everest. Mauna Kea is considered a sacred mountain by the ancient Hawaiians.

TMT Construction on top of Mauna Kea is actively being protested by native Hawaiians, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

This is obviously an old shot. :P Taken from a helicopter in Kauai, Hawaii.
