Curiously, the Italians love to plant rows of Poplar trees. This grove in an agricultural area in Northern Italy.

The trees are still loaded with blossom and fruit at Banes Grove, the retired citrus grove at our Airbnb in Floral City. Dawn walks proved a little too dark for photography and we had to wait until the sun rose high enough to penetrate the trees. Molly and I used this as the perfect excuse to catch an extra hour of sleep!

Small aspen trees, packed closely together, with golden autumn leaves, Eastern Sierra Nevada
While the exuberant colors of large groves of autumn aspens are attractive, there is something about the trunks that is hard to resist, even when the colors may have diminished a bit — or perhaps because the colors are less striking. I know I'm not the only photographer who returns to this "take" on the subject. It is fun and more than a bit challenging to make compositions out of such complexity. Frequently I'll stop and look at a grove, think "that will make a great photograph," and then gradually discover that some subtle element is not quite right and the whole thing won't work. I'm continually surprised that a subject that seems so simple often isn't.
To a great extent it is a question of balance of several sorts. The complex patterns of trunks cannot be completely uniform or there will be no form to the image. There must be some differentiation in the ways that trunks are grouped and among the angles of branches. But too much differentiation is also a problem. There is a "just right" quality to these compositions that is hard to explain, but which I know when I see it. A bit of "dissonance" can help, too — a little bit of something that seems to step outside the predominant patterns. In this photograph that could be the diagonal branches at coming across from the right, or it might be the group of closer leaves along one side. There is also some sense of depth, and if you look closely you may see a good distance into the more distant and darker areas of the small grove. And aside from the obvious vertical lines, there are three horizontal layers — brush at the bottom, trunks in the middle, and yellow leaves at the top.

Grove.
Last of the kingfisher. This one was taken when it was a little cloudy - far easier to get the exposure of the white cheek patch correct in dull lighting.

I did see female/juveniles at both locations but the males were always in the better position. This is the only shot I managed of a female.
The camellia grove at Wildwood Garden, near Bilpin, in the Blue Mountains - 90 minutes drive northwest of Sydney.
Photographed two days ago - on Friday 28th August, 2020.
I visited Wildwood Garden in the Blue Mountains to see the camellias in bloom. And I managed to discover, in the nursery, amazing fragrant geraniums - orange peel, ginger and cinnamon. Plus I got two fragrant salvias - one is called 'Fruit Punch' and the other is grapefruit scented. The cafe was awesome with home-made apple

Another archive image of a frequently shot scene, near San Quirico d’Orcia, Tuscany. – A fellow photographer there was shooting film. When I met him again a few days later, he told me that he forgot to transport the film, resulting in multiple exposures of the same image, which spoiled it, of course. I really felt sorry for him because the light was wonderful on this evening.

I don't remember exactly where I took this, but it was on a day we covered a lot of ground around Cincinnati. I think it was in the Camp Washington neighborhood just parked on a side road.

A 200-series type manifest with a sharp EMD rebuild leading is just a few miles out of its origination terminal of St. Paul Yard and is getting a run in down to La Crosse and beyond. East Hump got them onto the ex-MILW at Newport, and they are seen passing through the east end of the Cottage Grove siding at CP 3977. For some inexplicable reason, I did not follow them down the river.
On a weekend away to Canberra we stopped off at the Fedra Olive Grove to take a few photos. It was closed, but a lovely day all the same.
