Former London Country/Green Line AEC Swift SMA1 seen in its second life with Groves of Sheffield, or the 'Nu-Life Window Bus Company' as they were christened in some circles.

It is seen in Sheffield in March 1987.

This was built in 1849 and is on the grounds of the Missouri Botanical Garden. It was the founder's (Henry Shaw) country residence. Thanks for going back in time with me.

A grove of old trees in late-autumn evening light.

This is the second of several photographs that resulted from going to some local holiday festivities — a big garden and mansion decked out in holiday lights and more... but it sure doesn't look like a holiday scene! After we arrived and parked our car we had to walk to the main facilities and along the way we passed this old grove. In the fading light (somewhat darker than the rendition in the photograph) it had a quality that was somewhere between slightly ominous and simply quiet and dark.

Typically I would probably use a tripod for a photograph like this one, but since our main reason for going to this event wasn't necessarily to make photographs I did not have one, so I cranked up the ISO and held the camera very still!

The light is fading as 150 137 heads a Buxton train into Hazel Grove station. Since the Blackpool trains were diverted to Manchester Airport there are only a few rush hour electric services using the line from Edgeley Junction to Hazel Grove which is a great waste of the investment that went into installing the catenary and associated infrastructure.

This must be something to do with the very wonderful Northern Powerhouse that our esteemed government keeps banging on about. This is the same government that funded the Ordsall curve in Manchester to allow services between Manchester Victoria and Piccadilly stations. They also removed the funds to increase capacity between Deansgate and Piccadilly with the result that the expensive track has exactly no passenger services using it at all. Joined up thinking at its best.

Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park, is one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island. Here visitors can stroll through a network of trails under the shadow of towering ancient Douglas-fir trees, majestic pillars untouched by the modern world – some more than 800 years old.

Jewels through throats.

Another picture from my 20 min stop off at grove rake mine near Rookhope. The mist in the background set the scene perfectly for photographing this site.

Sierra Nevada aspen grove with bare trunks

I've written before that this has been a very strange fall color season in the Eastern Sierra, and this photograph might be an example. Although the photograph was made very near the beginning of October, typically the time that the peak colors are arriving, this grove was one of many that were already completely devoid of autumn leaves. After spending some time in a very colorful area much further south along the eastern slopes of the Sierra, I decided to head back to the San Francisco Bay Area over a couple of passes that cross the range much further north. Near the top of one of these passes there is a vast open area that holds many large aspen groves, and I had hopes of photographing some color here late in the day.

As I arrived it was a beautiful scene — high, open sagebrush country with clouds moving quickly across the landscape and creating changeable light. But the aspens were pretty much spent. I pulled off the main road at a place I know well, and took a short detour down a little gravel road toward the edge of groves where there are some very large trees. Here I found the trees, alright, but the leaves were gone. Fortunately, I like aspen groves in almost any condition — with bare branches, with new spring growth, with colorful autumn leaves, in snow — so I went to work photographing the dense patterns of closely spaced aspen trunks in the soft late-day light, muted even further by clouds.
