The 50 years since the grounding of the tanker Torrey Canyon in 1967 have seen dramatic and sustained reduction in major oil spills from ships, thanks to cooperation between Governments and industry.
The story of how that incident served as a catalyst for positive change is told in a new exhibition which was launched on Monday (16 January) at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations agency with responsibility for the safety and security of international shipping and the prevention of pollution from ships.

The storm over the grounding of the container ship Rena on a reef just off this coast is still growing, even after the beaches have been re-opened through the efforts of thousands of volunteers working over 100s of kilometres of coastline to clean up the tons of oil deposited. thank you

Union with God is not something we acquire by a technique but the grounding truth of our lives that engenders the very search for God. Because God is the ground of our being, the relationship between creature and Creator is such that, by sheer grace, separation is not possible. God does not know how to be absent. The fact that most of us experience throughout most of our lives a sense of absence or distance from God is the great illusion that we are caught up in; it is the human condition. The sense of separation from God is real, but the meeting of stillness reveals that this perceived separation does not have the last word. This illusion of separation is generated by the mind and is sustained by the riveting of our attention to the interior soap opera, the constant chatter of the cocktail party going on in our heads.-Into the Silent Land: A Guide to the Christian Practice of Contemplation by Martin Laird

Walking along the beach, feeling the sand between your toes, grounding you with each step as the steady roar of the ocean fills the air, sometimes a deep rumble, sometimes a gentle sigh. The waves rolling in gently and then retreating like breath itself, and in their rhythm you find space to think, to wonder what lies beyond that moment. Questions surface quietly—what is next, where will the path lead, what unexpected turns might life still hold? With the horizon stretching endlessly in front of you, you can't help but wonder - what lies ahead: something to fear or an invitation, as wide and open as the sea before you?
So the bruises are from a new exercise class I started last month - pole fitness. I was inspired by a blogger I follow. She was not a small girl, but was strong, also a runner. And she loved pole dancing. So I tried it! I am the oldest in the class, the slowest learner, and I have some health issues that interfere. But the class is so interesting to me, and enjoyable. After each one I feel stronger. And I notice my confidence building with each class. Being OK with the current me - has helped take a lot of pressure off. It has been a fun experiment!

This AI-generated image presents a charming, stylized 3D render of a wooden structure, reminiscent of a small, square raft or perhaps a jungle-themed modular seating unit. The structure is composed of dark, heavily textured wooden planks and a central post, all bound together by thick, coarse rope. Resting on the four outward-facing sections are five plush cushions: four in a neutral beige and one in a contrasting reddish-orange with a geometric pattern. The entire object floats against a simple, solid light blue background, which effectively isolates the subject and enhances the sense of its three-dimensional form. The aesthetic is clearly digital, yet it employs techniques like detailed wood grain, visible stitching on the cushions, and realistic-looking rope knots to achieve a high degree of visual appeal and tactility, suggesting a style often used in video games or animated shorts.
The artwork evokes a feeling of rustic simplicity and imaginative utility. The materials - wood and rope - suggest a connection to nature, craftsmanship, and perhaps a rudimentary, temporary shelter or transport, like a raft. However, the addition of the soft, comfortable cushions introduces an element of unexpected luxury and domesticity to the rough, functional structure. This contrast between the rugged building materials and the invitation to rest creates a compelling visual dynamic. The structure, symmetrical and balanced, also hints at a communal or shared space, inviting multiple occupants to gather and relax, perhaps orbiting a central point represented by the core wooden post.
Interpreting the piece, it could be seen as an allegory for creating comfort and stability in a transient or harsh environment. The "raft" floats in an ungrounded blue space - an indeterminate setting - suggesting a state of being "adrift" or in a non-place. Despite this lack of fixed grounding, the structure is robustly bound, and the cushions provide an anchor of human-centered rest. The single red cushion, standing out from the beige, could symbolize the individual or a point of focus within the collective, while the overall piece speaks to the human capacity to build warmth and community even when resources are simple or circumstances are uncertain. It is a digital artifact that uses stylized realism to touch on themes of escapism, resilience, and the universal need for comfort.

Inveneo is proud to be an implementing partner with Creative Associates in the Tanzania 21st Century Basic Education Program (Tz21) where our role is to lead the technology intervention design and deployment with Kicheko Ltd, our Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP) in Tanzania. Together, Inveneo and Kicheko have been instrumental in introducing sustainable technology solutions that are relevant to rural Tanzanian schools that often lack electrical power and ICT skilled staff.
Recently we passed a major milestone in the program - the deployment of information and communication technologies to 5 pilot schools.
Dr. H.E. Kavishe of Kicheko, Wayan Vota and Jen Overgaag of Inveneo, assisted by a cadre of Kicheko technicians, installed a mix of laptops, desktops, LED projectors and related networking and power equipment at Naliendele, Kambarage, Darajani, and Kisiwandui Primary Schools, and Machakaeni Teacher Center.
The pilot deployment is testing technology configurations and the installation was used to train local engineers on Inveneo installation methodologies in preparation for the major ICT deployment to all schools, scheduled for early 2012.
