Royal Iris departing from Eastham Locks grounded and started to take on water. A major incident was declared and New Brighton's Lifeboat and Hovercraft along with Marine Fire One, Pilot launch Kittiwake and WD Michel raced to the scene. Royal Iris came alongside the Dredger Deo Gloria, and started to transfer some of her 70 passengers onto Deo Gloria. Coastguard as far as Flint & Crosby where dispatched to assist, and Deo Gloria towed Royal Iris into the QE2 oildock where Merseyside Fire Brigade where waiting to assist with pumping out.

An interested crowd of spectators gathered at the foreshore near Arbroath harbour following the grounding of a small coastal steamer, the Florence, on rocks outside the harbour at the beginning of October, 1938. The vessel's seven-strong crew was rescued by the Arbroath motor lifeboat, RNLB John and William Mudie. The vessel had left Bo'ness with a cargo of 290 tons of coal for Arbroath Corporation Gas Works. When she arrived at Arbroath, she received a signal from the coastguard that there would not be enough water for her to berth for two days, because of the neap tides. The captain decided to make for the open sea and was in process of weighing anchor when a strong south-easterly gale and heavy seas drove his ship on to the Knuckle Rock. After the crew had been rescued, the vessel moved from the Knuckle Rock on to rocks nearer the shore. The captain and a surveyor later boarded the ship and made an examination when it was found that she had been holed both fore and aft and the engine and boilers had been forced out of poisition by the pounding the ship had received. By the end of October, the owners, Fallows Steamship Company, Liverpool, had given up hope of salvaging the vessel and locals were given permission to take what they could of her cargo.

The storm over the grounding of the container ship Rena on a reef just off this coast is still growing, even after the beaches have been re-opened through the efforts of thousands of volunteers working over 100s of kilometres of coastline to clean up the tons of oil deposited. thank you

Students and faculty in UF Law’s Environmental and Land Use Law Program’s Spring Break Field Course explored the diverse marine and coastal ecoregion shared by South Florida and the Bahamian archipelago.
The purpose of the week-long course, led by Tom Ankersen, Florida Sea Grant's Legal Specialist, was to provide students a firm grounding in the law, policy and practice of coastal and marine sustainable development through field-based immersion, practitioner lectures, and reflective discussions.
The group traveled from the intensely developed waterfront of Biscayne Bay to the bustling government center of Nassau in the Bahamas, and then on to the quiet, rural family island of Andros, bounded by the great Bahama Bank and the Tongue of the Ocean. While there is a world of difference between the two neighbors separated by the Gulf Stream, they share a remarkably similar ecosystem facing many of the same threats, and common language of the common law.
This year’s Spring Break Field course furthers the UF Law Conservation Clinic’s South Florida Bahamas ecoregional initiative supported by Florida Sea Grant, and in partnership with the Bahamas National Trust.

The "Marie Celeste" (yes,really!) which was driven onto rocks and is now beached at Holywell amidst reports of unheeded warnings, a twelve hour rescue operation, an arrest and the need for the bomb disposal team to check out the boat!

Recently we passed a major milestone in the program - the deployment of information and communication technologies to 5 pilot schools.
Dr. H.E. Kavishe of Kicheko, Wayan Vota and Jen Overgaag of Inveneo, assisted by a cadre of Kicheko technicians, installed a mix of laptops, desktops, LED projectors and related networking and power equipment at Naliendele, Kambarage, Darajani, and Kisiwandui Primary Schools, and Machakaeni Teacher Center.
The pilot deployment is testing technology configurations and the installation was used to train local engineers on Inveneo installation methodologies in preparation for the major ICT deployment to all schools, scheduled for early 2012.

And, they protect the life of anyone coming into contact with the electric current that can causer serious burns or death.
4479. Since weather is so much a part of the atmosphere of things, we hope everyone has enjoyed these fireside reminiscences of HMAS BARCOO'S grounding at West beach, Gleneg, during the great 'hurricane' of '48.
BARCOO is again seen here being brought into Port Adelaide by the sloop HMAS WARREGO after the survey frigate was re-floated. She was found to have suffered no damage, having come ashore on a sandy bottom.
There was a history of HMAS BARCOO written ' HMAS Barcoo - The story of a Ship and her Ship's Company' by Robert McAuslan, published in 1995, but it is a scarce volume, and we have not been unable to access it. Maybe in time.
BARCOO was decommissioned on 21 February 1964, and sold for scrapping on February 15, 1972 to N.W. Kennedy Ltd of Vancouver Canada. She was scrapped in Taiwan later that year.

HMAS BARCOO sailed to Sydney under her own steam and had the following repairs done in the Fitzroy Dock, Cockatoo Island:
1. A/S Dome replaced.
2. Part of Port bilge keel removed, straightened and then replaced.
3. Bottom 25% of rudder removed and replaced.
4. Starboard propeller replaced, as tips were slightly turned.
5. All underwater fittings refitted.

The "Longone" already stripped four days after it's grounding on the rocks of Spirit's Bay, NZ.
According to the Northland Ages report on January 28th, 2010:
While the owner of this yacht tried to deliver people to the Spirits Bay Beach, gusty winds and a large swell sealed the fate of "The Longone".
And to add insult to injury, only one person on the beach offered assistance. No sooner was the yacht grounded on the rocks, did other by-standers immediately start looting. Taking anything from electronics to clothing and food. The paper goes on to compare the looters like locusts grabbing everything.
No one was injured and the yacht was insured and this is the important thing.
Another story was published in the same newspaper on February 7, 2010 with another side to the story from people on the beach. There is now contradiction to the original story and the chain of events.

4508. After all she had survived in the Mediterranean, HMAS VOYAGER [I] would be lost to a grounding, while on a special mission to land 400 commandoes of the 2/4 Independent Company on Japanese Occupied Timor on Sept. 23, 1942.
The plan was to take out the 2/2 Independent Company already on the island fighting a guerilla war, and any Timorese refugees who needed to come. The operation needed a vessel something of destroyer size. Up to that pooint covert Timor operations had been mainly done by corvettes and smaller patrol vessels.
The grounding was a simple matter of bad luck. VOYAGER [LCDR R.C. Robison, RAN] had arrived and began unloading troops in the tricky waters of Betano Bay at 6.30pm. Deciding that the landing position was poor, LCDR Robison decided to move when a current surge swung the vessel stern-first into a sandbank.
Attempts to ligyhten the ship and move failed as her propellors ground into the sand. Discovered by Japanese bombers the next day [24th] VOYAGER severe attack, and it was decided to complete her destruction with demolition charges when the ship's position became hopeless.
The ship's company were picked up by corvettes HMAS KALGOORLIE and HMAS WARRNAMBOOL at 8pm the next evening. [25th].
