Photo my brother took of the barge that went aground South of South Beach in Scientists' Cliffs during Ernesto. It was ultimately towed away.
The 51,000 ton car carrier Hoegh Osaka after grounding on Brambles Bank in the Solent. I was duty launching authority at Cowes Lifeboat Station (running the station operations) that night... a long night during which Cowes Lifeboat and 3 others, plus two helicopters rescued 25 crew from the water and listing deck.

An interested crowd of spectators gathered at the foreshore near the harbour following the grounding of a small coastal steamer, the Florence, on rocks outside Arbroath Harbour at the beginning of October, 1938. The vessel's seven-strong crew was rescued by the Arbroath motor lifeboat, RNLB John and William Mudie. The vessel had left Bo'ness with a cargo of 290 tons of coal for Arbroath Corporation Gas Works. When she arrived at Arbroath, she received a signal from the coastguard that there would not be enough water for her to berth for two days, because of the neap tides. The captain decided to make for the open sea and was in process of weighing anchor when a strong south-easterly gale and heavy seas drove his ship on to the Knuckle Rock. After the crew had been rescued, the vessel moved from the Knuckle Rock on to rocks nearer the shore. The captain and a surveyor later boarded the ship and made an examination when it was found that she had been holed both fore and aft and the engine and boilers had been forced out of position by the pounding the ship had received. By the end of October, the owners, Fallows Steamship Company, Liverpool, had given up hope of salvaging the vessel and locals were given permission to take what they could of her cargo.

Royal Iris departing from Eastham Locks grounded and started to take on water. A major incident was declared and New Brighton's Lifeboat and Hovercraft along with Marine Fire One, Pilot launch Kittiwake and WD Michel raced to the scene. Royal Iris came alongside the Dredger Deo Gloria, and started to transfer some of her 70 passengers onto Deo Gloria. Coastguard as far as Flint & Crosby where dispatched to assist, and Deo Gloria towed Royal Iris into the QE2 oildock where Merseyside Fire Brigade where waiting to assist with pumping out.
