Green Heron (adult) - Florida Wetlands - 9/23/21

The Green Heron is relatively small. Adult body length is about 17 inches. The neck is often pulled in tight against the body. Adults have a glossy, greenish-black cap, a greenish back and wings that are grey-black grading into green or blue, a chestnut neck with a white line down the front, grey underparts and short yellow legs. The bill is dark with a long, sharp point. - Thanks for looking.

Okay, there is this green box in the kitchen with no use, but it looks pretty good for the background of this macro...hopefully.

A female Green Honeycreeper (Chlorophanes spiza) is taking nectar from a Guama Tree flower. The Guama Tree (Inga edulis) attracts many bird species. Foraging in this tree, we may find hummingbirds and a variety of songbirds such as honeycreepers, bananaquits, warblers, tanagers, etc.
The green catbird (Ailuroedus crassirostris) is a species of bowerbird found in subtropical forests along the east coast of Australia, from southeastern Queensland to southern New South Wales. It is named for its distinctive call which sounds like a cat meowing, although it has also been mistaken for a crying child, or a scary vampire sound early in the morning.

This is a record shot of a Green Heron, which I saw in Newfoundland this past summer, just hours before I was to return to Nova Scotia. I nearly missed posting it, until My recent scan through photos from this past summer.

A Banded Demoiselle by the River Trent at Attenborough Nature Reserve.
The banded demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens) is a species of damselfly belonging to the family Calopterygidae. It is often found along slow-flowing streams and rivers. It is an Eurasian species occurring from the Atlantic coast eastwards to Lake Baikal and northwestern China.
This is a large damselfly with a total length of up to 48 millimetres (1.9 in) and a hindwing length of up to 36 millimetres (1.4 in).
Male and female are variable in color and pattern. The male has translucent wings which each have a broad, dark iridescent blue-black spot (or band) across the outer part. On immature individuals the spot is dark brown. The body can be a metallic blue or bluish green or a combination of both colours, depending on the time of year and location.
The dark wing patch of the male starts at the nodus (the slight dip midway down the upper edge of the wing) but can reach up to the wing-tip in southern races. In the very similar beautiful demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo), the dark patch starts before the nodus.
The female has translucent, pale green iridescent wings with a white patch near the tip (a pseudopterostigma), and a metallic green or bronze/green body.
Admittedly not taken in Manitoba. This one is from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
This beautiful Green Heron was foraging around one of the small ponds on the resort property where we were staying.

Here is a photo of that elusive optical phenomenon known as the green flash. It usually occurs around sunset and can be enhanced when a mirage stretches the sun to produce discs above the true sun. The light is refracted through the atmosphere and green is the last visible colour of the spectrum before the light disappears. It is usually a short-lived phenomenon, hence the term flash. I apologise to all those who view my photos that are afflicted by red/green colour-blindness as I understand the green upper stripe looks just the same as the orange-yellow lower stripes. The gene for red/green colour-blindness is recessive, and is carried on the X sex chromosome. In mammals, males have just a single X chromosome, and an empty Y chromosome, whereas females have a pair of X chromosomes. If males carry a copy of this gene it will manifest itself and the carrier will be red/green colour-blind. But if females carry a copy, its effects will be masked by a normal (dominant) gene on the other X chromosome, and their vision will be normal. Females would need a copy of the colour-blindness gene on both X chromosomes to be afflicted by colour-blindness. This is why colour-blindness is so much more frequent in males.
