Most Green Sandpipers are seen during their autumn migration, when they are passing through Britain on journeys from Scandinavia to their African wintering grounds.
They enjoy the clear chalk waters of south-east England, often using old water-cress beds or small ditches, and it is here that a few individuals may choose to spend the winter instead of moving south. An encounter with a Green Sandpiper is often a fleeting view of a dark bird with a white rump, dashing away and making a thin repeated whistle.
Very small numbers of Green Sandpipers breed in northern Scotland, using habitats similar to the tundra more typically used further north.
Macaranga tanarius
Macaranga tanarius is a plant found in South East Asia, Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia. It's commonly seen as a pioneer species in disturbed rainforest areas. Easily recognised for the round veiny leaves. In Australia it naturally occurs from the Richmond River, New South Wales to Cooktown in tropical Queensland. (Source:

The green-eared barbet is 24.5–27 cm in length. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail. The adult has a white-streaked brown head and breast, green ear coverts, mainly dark bill, and green-streaked yellow belly. The rest of the plumage is green.
Both sexes and immature birds are similar. This species resembles lineated barbet, but is smaller, has the distinctive green ear patch, a darker bill and a dark, rather than yellow, eye-ring.
The green-eared barbet is a resident breeder in southern China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. It inhabits broadleaf evergreen and mixed or open woodlands at up to 900 m (3,000 ft) elevation.
Stunning and unmistakable: green and yellow plumage with bold black-and-blue head pattern. Birds from Texas to Honduras have a blue crown, dark eye, and relatively uniform lime-green body, and occur in small flocks in woodland with brushy understory. Birds in South America, sometimes called Inca Jays, occur in Andean cloud forest from Venezuela to Bolivia. They show a white crown, pale eye, blue forehead tuft, and rich sulphur-yellow belly contrasting with darker green upperparts. Both populations give a variety of strange mechanical calls.

Found this Green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) near to the Bee orchid plant at Noar Hill.
"This butterfly is the most widespread of our hairstreaks. However, it is also a local species, forming distinct colonies which can be as small as a few dozen individuals, although other colonies can be much larger. Both sexes always settle with their wings closed, the brown uppersides only ever being seen in flight. The undersides, by contrast, provide the illusion of being green, an effect produced by the diffraction of light on a lattice-like structure found within the wing scales, which provides excellent camouflage as the butterfly rests on a favourite perch, such as a Hawthorn branch. This butterfly will also regulate its body temperature by tilting its wings appropriately to catch the sun's rays. This butterfly is found throughout the British Isles - partly due to the wide variety of foodplants it uses, and the wide range of habitats it frequents. However, it is absent from the Isle of Man, Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland."

What luck. This Greenie flew into the reeds just as I was looking there for one. Only stayed for a few seconds before it disappeared deeper into the marshy habitat.
A quartet of Union Railroad MP15's pull into the north end of the Clairton Coke Works plant in Clairton, Pennsylvania. The Job 66 crew has a train of empty CSX coke hoppers in tow which were picked up from CSX and will be loaded here before being taken back for interchange.

Green Herons can be found in wooded ponds and marshes and are often seen standing motionless at water’s edge as they hunt for fish and amphibians. As opposed to great blue herons and great egrets, Green Herons do not generally wade in water but rather stand on vegetation or solid ground to forage. Although some individuals may not be too bothered by human presence, obstructions by marsh vegetation and their distance from viewing point often make them difficult to get clear shots of. However, they will occasionally perch higher on trees, generally leafless trees (snags) to gain safety, rest, preen or just to get a bird eye view of the area below. Whatever the objectives of the bird may be in such a circumstance, I see it as a great opportunity to photograph the bird from below its location as well as in flight per shown herein, for the bird does not generally remain an any given place very long during day time.
