A landscape in April

This is a scene from the beautiful rolling green hills of Rwanda, one of the most scenic countries I've ever had the chance to visit.

I'll be taking a few days off to celebrate Easter and wish all my contacts who celebrate Easter a blessed long weekend. For those of you celebrating Passover or Ramadan, I also wish you a special holiday. I'll be back early next week.

This old truck shot in Bluff, Utah had a busy background, so I gave it a nicer environment.

*["green" herons because of the green color on their wings]

The Green Heron is relatively small; adult body length is about 17 inches. The neck is often pulled in tight against the body. Adults have a glossy, greenish-black cap, a greenish back and wings that are grey-black grading into green or blue, a chestnut neck with a white line down the front, grey underparts and short yellow legs. The bill is dark with a long, sharp point. Neck extends way out!

I think that it's better LARGE.

This is a smaller heron. All stretched out he is only about 12". This one is fishing along the edge of the shore. moving in a fast walk to his next location.

I was able to get very close to this one and got a bunch of photos in various poses, activity. Sooo...you'll be seeing this one again and again.

Green Heron (Butorides virescens) is a tiny heron found throughout much of North and Central America. It weighs about 240g compared with about 1500g for Grey Heron. Its scientific name translates as "resembling a Bittern" and "greenish". They used to be lumped with the pantropical Striated Heron (B. striata): www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/30969245223/in/photolist under the name Green-backed Heron but they were split as separate species some time ago. Almost unbelievably there have been eight records of trans-Atlantic vagrants in Britain plus one in Ireland.

Green Herons are perhaps most famous for using bait to lure fish within striking distance. They have been seen to use bread, and sometimes insects to lure fish. I photographed this adult in the mangroves of San Ignacio lagoon in Baja.
