Good Stewards of Nature

Lagoa dos Salgados, Portugal. - a good number of young birds with adults, so hopefully they have had a good breeding season.

Met these beauties on an early morning stroll through the lagoones of Ria Formosa NP, Algarve, Portugal

The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) suffers from low reproductive success if exposed to disturbance at breeding colonies (e.g. from tourists, low-flying aircraft and especially all-terrain vehicles , or if water-levels surrounding nest-sites lower (resulting in increased access to and therefore predation from ground predators such as foxes and feral dogs) . The lowering of water levels in lakes can also lead to hyper-salinity which may affect food resources . Other threats to the species's habitat include effluents from soda-ash mining , pollution from sewage and heavy metal effluents from industries . The species also suffers mortality from lead poisoning , collisions with fences and powerlines , and from diseases such as tuberculosis, septicemia and avian botulism . Utilisation In Egypt large numbers of adults are shot or captured to be sold in markets and egg collecting from colonies occurs in some areas this may become a threat.

The Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the emblematic bird of the French Camargue region. This is the only region of France where these birds nest and one of the only places in the world where the flamingo lay back every year since 1969. On "Pond Fangassier " more than 10,000 Flemish come to reproduce. These gregarious birds live in group in the wet zones. This large web-footed bird, prefers the large expanses of shallow salt water or brackish marshes and ponds, what explains its strong presence in the Camargue. These areas allow them to find their food, essentially constituted by shellfishes and seaweeds. Their beak which contains a system of comb, allows them to filter the water to retain the nourishing elements (shrimp artémia). The color of flamingos comes from their food rich in beta carotene. The young flamingos, are lightly colored.

When I started planning on visiting Africa flamingos were one of those birds I had hopes of photographing. All those nature documentaries on Africa that I watched on PBS over the years seemed to feature huge flocks of flamingos and wow what a sight to see in person. As it turned out we did have an opportunity to visit an alkali lake in the rift valley of Ethiopia and while it wasn’t quite the spectacle from the TV shows it was pretty darn impressive.

For some reason the water was very low and we had to walk quite a distance to get to the water’s edge and as we got close the walking got rather challenging. The flamingos were out a few hundred feet from the edge of the water and it quickly became obvious that the shots were going to mostly be fairly distant ones since I didn’t want to leave my boots stuck in the mud.

The lighting was rather unusual with a high haze that wasn’t really sunny but not really overcast either. The effect made the water and the lake look really interesting but wow did it really challenge the auto-focus on my camera. There were hundreds of birds but they seemed to be spread out just enough to where it was all but impossible to get a feeling of just how many there were like the picture I had in my mind.

So, things weren’t exactly like I wanted them so I accepted what we had and clicked away at the amazing beauty that was in front of me and ended up with some shots that I think are really pretty.

It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (Bangladesh and coastal regions of Pakistan and India), the Middle East (Turkey, Israel, Lebanon) and southern Europe (including Spain, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Italy and the Camargue region of France). The most northern breeding spot is the Zwillbrocker Venn in Western Germany, close to the border with the Netherlands. In Gujarat, a state of India, flamingos can be observed at the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, Flamingo City and in the Thol Bird Sanctuary. They remain here during entire winter season.

The Madre de las Marismas lagoon at El Rocio in Coto Donana, Spain, is home to flocks of Greater Flamingo which can be seen swishing their deep, down-kinked bills in the shallow, highly saline water to filter the crustaceans and vegetable matter.
