It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (Bangladesh and coastal regions of Pakistan and India), the Middle East (Turkey, Israel, Lebanon) and southern Europe (including Spain, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Italy and the Camargue region of France). The most northern breeding spot is the Zwillbrocker Venn in Western Germany, close to the border with the Netherlands. In Gujarat, a state of India, flamingos can be observed at the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, Flamingo City and in the Thol Bird Sanctuary. They remain here during entire winter season.

The Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the emblematic bird of the French Camargue region. This is the only region of France where these birds nest and one of the only places in the world where the flamingo lay back every year since 1969. On "Pond Fangassier " more than 10,000 Flamingos come to reproduce. These gregarious birds live in group in the wet zones. This large web-footed bird, prefers the large expanses of shallow salt water or brackish marshes and ponds, what explains its strong presence in the Camargue. These areas allow them to find their food, essentially constituted by shellfishes and seaweeds. Their beak which contains a system of comb, allows them to filter the water to retain the nourishing elements (shrimp artémia). The color of flamingos comes from their food rich in beta carotene. The young flamingos, are lightly colored.

The Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widespread and largest species of the flamingo family. It is found in Africa, on the Indian subcontinent, in the Middle East, and in southern Europe.

This is the largest species of flamingo, averaging 110–150 cm (43–59 in) tall and weighing 2–4 kg (4.4–8.8 lb). The largest male flamingos have been recorded at up to 187 cm (74 in) tall and 4.5 kg (9.9 lb).

Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus)

The Greater Flamingo is the largest of all species. The coloring of them is the main difference for telling them apart. One is very bright red in color and lives along the coast of the West Indies and even into Florida. Those with the pinker coloring are found residing in Africa and East India Pakistan. This particular species of Flamingo has the most diversified habitat in the wild of all of them.

During the colder times of the year, many of the Great Flamingos in Asia migrate to warmer climates. They generally end up in either Iran or India Pakistan. They won’t migrate though until the weather turns bad so when the season is a mild one they may not end up migrating at all. Due to global warming their migration patterns seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

They communicate vocally with a type of honking that is very similar to the sounds that geese make. Living in extremely large colonies, they are able to use these sounds as well as non verbal forms of communication to engage with each other. They don’t like their natural environment to be disrupted by noise, people, or other animals though. This can create high levels of stress for them to deal with.

The oldest Greater Flamingo in the world is found in a zoo located in Australia. He is at least 77 years old, but the exact age isn’t known. He was already grown up when he arrived as depicted by the colors of his feathers. The younger ones don’t get the pigmentation until they are at least 3 years of age.

Greater flamingos are the tallest species of flamingo. They have paler feathers and pink bills.

They live for quite a long time - about 20 to 30 years in the wild, or up to 50 years if they are in a zoo. One greater flamingo at a zoo in Australia lived to be 83!
