Thousands of flamingos are found at Lake Amboseli in Kenya.

Jardin des plantes de Paris - (Garden of the Plants)

Species: Phoenicopterus ruber.

Location: Greece.

Flamingos, of which there are a handful of species worldwide, are instantly recognizable. The downturned bill, long neck, long legs and red-splashed wings of the Greater Flamingo create a dramatic and easily identified bird. Info: RSPB.

Espais Naturals del Riu Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain

The combination of persistent mosquitos and thieving scum made for a challenging start to our trip and unfortunately, means this area is best avoided, which is a shame because otherwise the reserve is well worth a visit. Fortunately we left nothing of real value in the car.

stopped over for a couple of days on the way to Africa...

The Greater flamingo is the only representative of its family (phoenicopteridae) in Europe (France, Spain). Its silhouette is unique and it is easily identifiable with its long legs, its long neck ended by a curved beak with black tip, and its light pink body.

At Pallikaranai, Chennai

Saw them around February and they are still here!!

They migrate from the Rann of Kutch (c.1900 kms from here) in Nov-Dec. As late as until 2011, barely six individuals were seen here and in the last 4 years the place is just besprinkled as it were in pink (with some counts mentioning a no. as high as 500). At least for the last 2 years, the stay is well extended too.
