A low-key rendering of two Greater Flamingos from the collection kept at Pensthorpe Natural Park near Fakenham, Norfolk.

Clicked a long time back. When I approached the beach it was the Grey Heron that I first spotted and so I tried to get close hoping to get good shots. But it kept moving away from me. It was then that I spotted the Greater Flamingo. Since it was a new species for me my focus shifted to it. I tried to keep close to the Flamingo and spent a lot of time trailing it hoping to get good shots. It was then I noticed a change in the Grey Heron's behaviour. It suddenly seemed to want to get close to the Flamingo as if to attract my attention. It flew in close and kept coming in the frame as if it was jealous of all the attention I was lavishing on the Flamingo. Watching this scene what impressed me was the dignity which the Flamingo maintained, going about its business without a care and seemingly unaffected by the frivolity of the Heron. In the bargain I got good shots of both.

Not in Scotland but an oldie taken in the Ebro Delta, Catalonia.....I remember, vividly, their slow and languid flight.

These famous pink birds can be found in warm, watery regions on many continents. They favor environments like estuaries and saline or alkaline lakes. Considering their appearance, flamingos are surprisingly fluid swimmers, but really thrive on the extensive mud flats where they breed and feed.

They communicate vocally with a type of honking that is very similar to the sounds that geese make. Living in extremely large colonies, they are able to use these sounds as well as non verbal forms of communication to engage with each other. They don’t like their natural environment to be disrupted by noise, people, or other animals though. This can create high levels of stress for them to deal with.

The oldest Greater Flamingo in the world is found in a zoo located in Australia. He is at least 77 years old, but the exact age isn’t known. He was already grown up when he arrived as depicted by the colors of his feathers. The younger ones don’t get the pigmentation until they are at least 3 years of age.

The adult greater flamingo is predominantly pale pink and white with an elongated neck, narrow wings and long pale pink legs. Primary and secondary flight feathers are black and the lesser and median wing coverts are a bright red in colour, contrasting with the remainder of the wing area which is pale pink. The bill is chunky, pink in colour and curving downwards to a black tip; the eyes are bright yellow. Males and females are identical in plumage colouring and patternation but the female is up to one fifth smaller overall. In flight the neck is extended forwards in a straight line and the legs assume an almost mirror image trailing backwards. Juveniles mostly lack the pinkish colour of the adult being mainly greyish brown overall with dark grey brown legs and bill and brownish wings and tail. Traces of pink may be seen on the underparts of young birds. (Courtesy Birdfacts)
