I lived in Tallahassee from 1992 - 1997. I interned at the Museum of Florida History in 1994, and then got my first post-FSU job there from 1994 - 1995 when budget cuts slashed a number of state jobs. The museum was opened in 1977 and is housed in the R. A. Gray Building behind the state capitol. One of my early jobs was cataloguing and recording the condition of several Civil War flags before sending them for conservation, the most rare being the 5th Florida regimental flag. Other exhibits I regularly cleaned, such as the case for the builder's model of the battleship USS Florida and citrus packing house. USCG Station Tillamook Bay. This was Barbara's first duty station. She used to help crew unit 47254, a 47-foot motor life boat which is still attached to Station Tillamook Bay. Three-image composite panorama of CSS Neuse II. Built in 2009 at the site on the Neuse River where the CSS Neuse was fitted out from 1863 - 1864, the CSS Neuse II is a full-sized, fully fitted out replica. Interior compoartments and equipment are replicated as well as all external features. The Neuse II is the only 100% complete life-sized Civil War ironclad replica (the life-sized replica of USS Monitor in Newport News, Virginia, is an external model only with no internal compartments). Four-image composite panorama of the main room in the fire engine house, the only building left of the amory raided by John Brown in 1859. Today sitting 150 feet from its original location (marked by a stone obelisk), it became known as "John Brown's Fort" and is the building Brown made his last stand in. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world with over 400 miles of tunnels mapped. It was carved over over millions of years by the underground Styx and Echo rivers, which empty into the Green River. It was first discovered 6,000 years ago by Native Americans and has been integral to Kentucky history ever since. (Nathanael Miller, 12 Dec. 2017)

Designed in 1881 by Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed from 1882 to 1888 by civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker and is clad in native Texas red granite. Albus the Crab on Hoover Dam. Spanning the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona, Hoover Dam creates Lake Meade and is one of the key electrical power and irrigation facilities in the southwestern U.S. Completed in 1936, the dam is 726 feet high and holds back about 10 trillion gallons of water. The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge was completed in 2010 to eliminate the traffic bottleneck on the dam, and is the second-highest bridge in the U.S. Hoover Dam, Nevada-Arizona. Windlass Hill marks the spot where the Oregon Trail left the high flatlands and descended into the lowlands of Ash Hollow and the and the North Platte River valley. Morris Island Lighthouse. Lit in 1876 and deactivated in 1962, it is 161 feet high. Originally it stood on Morris Island proper, but erosion long ago took out the keeper's quarters and separated the tower from the island. The Crazy Horse Memorial is being carved in the Black Hills of South Dakota. When finished, it is on track to be the largest sculpture in the world. It was begun in 1948 and is being done entirely with private money. Crazy Horse, South Dakota. (Nathanael Miller, 13 Aug. 2018)

Kauhi'imakaokalani, or the Crouching Lion. Behind it is a turtle. The ancient Hawaiians looked as this as a big-headed dog until European influences showed its resemblance to a lion. The turtle formation is immediately behind it. Makaua, Hawaii. (Nathanael Miller. 21 April 2018)

Engine 576 ("The Stripe") is a 4-8-4 locomotive built in August 1942 and donated to Nashville in 1953. Currently on display in Centennial Park, the Nashville Steam Preservation Society (N.S.P.S) is slowly working to restore 576 to operational status with the goal of running regular tours around Nashville. Centennial Park was the site of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. Today the full-scale replica of the ancient Athenian Parthenon is the only structure left. Chinese camel bone carving that required 40 artists to sculpt. Ripley's Believe It or Not, or Ripley's Odditorium, is a museum of curiosities that is part of the Ripley's chain around the world. This particular building is built to look like it was fractured by an earthquake along the nearby New Madrid faultline like the ones that hit hte area in 1811 and 1812. Branson, Missouri. The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a 158-acre (64 ha) botanical garden and outdoor sculpture park. It has a rather huge tropical conservatory, extensive Japanese garden, and winding paths that combine the natural and the art world by mixing the Meijers' sculpture collection into the garden landscape. Mount Rainier the highest peak of the Cascade volcanoes, rising 14,411 feet above sea level. It is also considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in North America. The statue of Athena was finally unveiled in the Nashville Parthenon in 1990 and gilded in 2002. Created by Alan LeQuire, at nearly 42 feet high it's the tallest the indoor statue in the the Western Hemisphere. Centennial Park was the site of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. Victorian-style Christmas tree. The home of Benjamin Harrison, 23rd presdient of the United States (in office from 1889 - 1893). Most of the house is occupied by furniture and aritifacts that belonged to the Harrison family. The abandoned and crumbling power house ovder the Little Patuxent River at historic Savage Mill has been left to ruin even as the rest of the mill was reborn as a unique shopping center. Savage Mill started life in 1821 as a cotton mill in Savage, Maryland. (Nathanael Miller. 05 May 2018)

Springfield has its share of odd sights along the road. You might bump into an old, damaged green elephant advertising a defunct record store, a pink elephant with a giant martini, or even a 30-foot tall statue of young Abe Lincoln at the state fair grounds. The Doolittle Cups. Commemorative cups used by the Doolittle Raiders during their reunions. When a member died, their cup was turned upside down. Today only one raider remains alive.
